Hiya,
The number of unassessed articles on WikiProject India currently stands at more than 18,000! Im wondering if there is an active task force or even a single member of the project that is dealing with these assessments? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unassessed-Class_India_articles_of_Unk...)
A similar note has been left on the India noticeboard, as it seems no one has assessed articles for some time for there to be such a massive build up of backlog.
Kind Regards,
Hi Pranav,
Should we try something like this ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Assessment/Tag_%26_...

Yes, anyone can assess articles (god, we'd need hundreds of more admins if admins were to assess tens of thousands of articles). Articles may be promoted upto B-class without formal review. Although anyone can assess articles, assessment is usually done by active volunteers at the Assessment department of the WikiProject. Anything higher than B-class needs formal review (there exists considerable confusion about the A-class though).

You can start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unassessed_India_articles .
The general criteria for assessment into a particular class can be seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IN1.0#Quality_scale
You don't need to stick to the letter in these criteria; you can just see the general quality of the article (whether it is well written, has enough of good sources, citation style, images etc) and decide.

Its easy to classify if you follow this ready reckoner:
Stub - one sentance to one/two paras Start - more than two paras C - has lead & structure, must have infobox if applicable, must have image if available B - developed a structure, has referencing, reasonably complete in content, checked for NPOV, No OR.
After this, one cannot self-assess. GA - needs to undergo GAN process by any experienced user A - Needs to Undergo A class review/peer review (usually after GA). FA - Needs to undergo FAC from panel of experienced FAC examining editors
GA deals with major issues of MOS & 5 principles, A Class with content, sources, correctness, completeness. So A Class is done en route to FAC and after GA. You can do A Class directly after B Class & take it to FA without going through GA if you wish.
Hope this helps, Noopur

Hi Noopur,
The five point rating for B Class has been developed by WikiProject Military History. See their template below for an article on a Indian Army soldier:
{{WPMILHIST |class=Start |Biography=yes |South-Asian=yes <!-- B-Class 5-criteria checklist | B1 <!-- Referencing and citations --> = y/n | B2 <!-- Coverage and accuracy --> = y/n | B3 <!-- Structure --> = y/n | B4 <!-- Grammar and style --> = y/n | B5 <!-- Supporting materials --> = y/n }}-->
This is quite good and can be used by you to assess articles on the talk page. However, this 5 point system is not part of WikiProject India template. So you can copy it into a new section on talk page of article, assess & date-stamp-sign your assessment.
Here is a detailed B-class assessment if you want to make a useful analysis & give hints to improvement. If not then just assess & leave the suggestions out (though this is not desireable and not the course recommended).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Periyar_%28river%29#B_Class_assessment
Warm regards,

After this, one cannot self-assess. GA - needs to undergo GAN process by any experienced user A - Needs to Undergo A class review/peer review (usually after GA). FA - Needs to undergo FAC from panel of experienced FAC examining editors
GA deals with major issues of MOS & 5 principles, A Class with content, sources, correctness, completeness. So A Class is done en route to FAC and after GA. You can do A Class directly after B Class & take it to FA without going through GA if you wish.
Hope this helps, Noopur

You can start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unassessed_India_articles .
The general criteria for assessment into a particular class can be seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IN1.0#Quality_scale
You don't need to stick to the letter in these criteria; you can just see the general quality of the article (whether it is well written, has enough of good sources, citation style, images etc) and decide.

A Class cannot exist without a formal peer review process. In the absence of participation, we cannot award this unless meaningful peer review takes place.
Stick to Stub, Start, C, B, GA, FA.

Hi Noopur,
The five point rating for B Class has been developed by WikiProject Military History. See their template below for an article on a Indian Army soldier:
{{WPMILHIST |class=Start |Biography=yes
|South-Asian=yes <!-- B-Class 5-criteria checklist | B1 <!-- Referencing and citations --> = y/n | B2 <!-- Coverage and accuracy --> = y/n | B3 <!-- Structure --> = y/n | B4 <!-- Grammar and style --> = y/n
| B5 <!-- Supporting materials --> = y/n }}-->

Just wondering, given our strength in numbers is not that great, would it be prudent to take up an Assessment Drive and another COTM in March? Should we suspend COTM for the month of March to concentrate on the Assessment Drive (which is certainly the need of the hour, given the backlog)?

Hiya,
The number of unassessed articles on WikiProject India currently stands at more than 18,000! Im wondering if there is an active task force or even a single member of the project that is dealing with these assessments? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unassessed-Class_India_articles_of_Unk... )
A similar note has been left on the India noticeboard, as it seems no one has assessed articles for some time for there to be such a massive build up of backlog.
Kind Regards,

Will this cover the whole backlog or will we need to oversee/do a drive anyways?

Thank you Tinu. For those new to the WikiProject, Tinu Cherian's efforts are the heroic story of one man trying to come to terms with challenges larger than he should have to tackle. Faced with the huge backlog, Tinu programmed a bot and let it do whatever he could so that the lack of human judgement could be partially remedied. If this were the only thing Tinu did, his name would be carved in stone in the WikiProject India Hall of Fame. But Tinu has done this & much more - more than I can say here, more than I even know.
On behalf of everyone, I thank Tinu for this stupendous effort & all the other great things he has been doing to this day.
Its humbling to know that he has done all that.
But the bot way is not the way to Nirvana.
Bots cannot judge. Only humans can.
So the Tag & Assess Way is the way to go. There are as of now at least 50 active Members of WikiProject India. I'm sure there are more, since we have more than 60 subscribers to this list alone. If each of us agrees to sit down & assess only 200 articles, over the next month, that is less than eight a day, we can clear 10,000 in one go! That's more than half of the entire backlog!
Its highly doable with the power of numbers! But for that everyone has to volunteer to try. Don't be afraid or shy. We are there to guide you and show you how. I promise you fun, learning and barnstars/awards.
This is doable manually & not a big deal. We shall be making a user guide to show you how to do it. It is easy to learn to judge.
We will have to begin manually, at first. It is no big deal! It is all cut & paste, hardly any typing.
Later on YuviPanda will be creating a simple to use form in which we will be able to do this assessment semi-automatically i.e. * by mouse clicks, we can load a new talk page for assessment, * choose options by ticking in the tick-boxes or option boxes, * by single button press, our assessments can be put on the the talk page.
So what are you waiting for? :) Join us, we are good people, nice & helpful.
We have only six names here as of now -
AshLin, Animeshkulkarni, ansuman, Around The Globe, Anbu121, sarvajna
Please pitch in and help us. Enlist your name here on the India Noticeboard.

Thanks Ashwin for the kind words.
Btw there is nothing better than *if* it can done manually :)
But I am going pile up a few more on to the Unasseessed category by running TinucherianBot on India related article categories, in the coming days.
WP:INDIA crossing 1 lakh India related articles will make it "bigger than" any other Indic language Wikipedia itself :)
All the best wishes !

Hi Tinu,
That is great to hear. TinuCherianBot is our greatest asset in adding red-link talk page articles to the WikiProject. We are happy when new articles join the family, even if they are "unfed" for a while. May I request this bot may please do this periodically every month!

We have wonderful news as far as the new initiative Tag & Assess 2012 is concerned.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/Assessment/Tag_%26_...
Already 20 editors have signed up!
*AshLin, Animeshkulkarni, Ansumang, Around The Globe, Anbu121, Sarvajna, Nearly Headless Nick, Bill william compton, Markvs88, ÐBigXray, basic.atari, naveenpf, ssriram_mt, Amartyabag, VasuVR, Nitika.t, karthikndr, utcursch, Redtigerxyz, Dwaipayan*
The sad part is that just about half are the guys on this mailing list. I request that at least half of the 60 plus people on this list should support this venture. That means we could have 20 more people reasonably.
How grand that would be - a 40 editor strength team assessing articles! We would make "kachumber" (cucumber salad) of the backlog!

To be clear, I haven't read the whole thread. But if I can assess upto B, am up for it. Lets get a verdict on these articles. How about a class like the GA/FA COTM for assessment to new assesses?? What say Ashwin or is it terribly easy? I don't want to get into conflicts over assessment hence, asking for a class.

As a thumb rule, dont assess articles you have created/made considerable contributions to - that might lead to conflict. Otherwise, iirc, Ashwin had sent an email a few days back, explaining different classes and how to assess to which class.
