In #1 we saw how to reconnoitre and plan for a campaign to take an article and make it GA. A few years ago this process was easy but now unconsciously standards have risen and a fart of GAs are being derecognised, one of the important reasons for which is content and referencing issues. Gandhi, despite having been a former GA, will require serious amount of work to be restored to that status. Our article "Gandhi" requires a major rewrite and is not the most suitable action to plunge editors new to the review process in. Rather than that, let us take up the issue of Referencing, which is part cleanup and partly related to content and which can be tackled without too much of our work being undone in the rewrite. Referencing involves a number of things. 1. Each fact needing reference should either have a reference or a {{cn}} tag placed. 2. Each reference needs to be checked against [[WP:RS]] (reliable sources) and if necessary deleted or replaced with better. If no ref can be found a {{cn}} tag be placed. Ultimately taged facts where references could not be found need to be deleted. 3. The content on the article pertaining to the reference needs to be checked - 1. Material written in the article is actually in the cited reference. 2. The material written in the article is an NPOV representation of the cited material in the reference. 4. #1 WHAT IS THE ARTICLE LIKE? The article is quite well developed but with some flaws, such as inappropriate lead, sections unbalanced, overall length, cleanup tags, references need completion etc. Large parts of the article appear well-written but would need an experienced copy-editor to go over the final product. WHAT WILL THE ARTICLE BE JUDGED BY? If you look at the article talk page banners and click the "show" button next to the article milestones, we can see the history of the article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mohandas_Karamchand_Gandhi - The article became a Featured Article by the criteria of that period on 22 January 2005. This was very relaxed compared to today's standards. - It underwent a Featured Article Review in June 2005 and was kept. - It underwent a peer review on 17 February 2006 and was improved vide the points. - It underwent a Featured Article Review in January 2009 and was demoted. COTM - Citations and Tags

I have recently seen a couple of editors adding refs by just adding links. Im sure most here are aware for those who are not - PFA a snapshot of the top of the page when your editing. Click on Cite and then choose the correct template from the dropdown. If you dont have certain info (such as the newspaper does not state the Correspondent name or the book is old and does not have an ISBN number) leave that part blank. Also, I thought it may be a good idea at the beginning of the month, to tag the article where needed (such as citation needed tags etc.) so as to make it easier for collaboration - everyone knows the amount of cleanup required, which can be measured by the tags with the aim of getting rid of all the tags by month end.

Supporting photothons

Hello friends, Its great to participate in a photothon - it generates lots of outreach, many images, new recruits to Wikimedia projects and of course lots of fun. Wish you were there in Kolkata or Ahmedabad but couldn't make it? There are ways to be part of the event though one may not be physically present. Before the event, you can help by evangelising, drumming up participants, setting up the pages, image categories for upload etc. Had experience of a photothon before? Do consider advising the organisers of the next one. Far too often, the organisers are arranging a photothon for the first time without previous experience. But equally important, is post-event support. Once the event is over and a few hundred images are uploaded to Commons, the event organisers and participants are tired and psychologically the event is over for them. However, the value of their effort is at a halfway point in the journey and not yet delivered. Often the images are not in place where they need to be - in the articles of the objects/places they show. Here is where we come in. A number of actions still need to be done. We can help these images attain value in the Wikimedia projects. * Check the licensing of the images. * Categorise the images appropriately. * Do improve the captions. Adding multi-lingual captions is a fantastic service to your language wikipedias. * Search out the relevant article on English Wikipedia and add the images to them. Of course if the article already is illustrated, there is no compulsion to add more images, only ensure that the best ones from the past and new images illustrate the article. * Add the images to the relevant articles in your Indic language Wikipedia of interest. * Create stubs for the important localities of your cities which either dont exist or are red-linked. * Ensure that the articles in Indic languages have interwiki link to the English one. This is a really great task, left incomplete far too often. So please help out folks. If each Indian editor just added one image or did a handful of categorisations or pitched in some way, the tasks will get done in no time at all. Obviously it is naturally right for the English Wikipedia SIG to help such photothons. We felt that the best way to help the photothon is to create a list of articles on English Wikipedia pertaining to the city/region of the photothon. This would not only the existing articles but also those which have not been created. This has been done for the Ahmedabad photothon. How to create such a list? Three ways: * Go to the city Wikipedia article/related articles and make links of every geographical feature/monument/locality pertaining to the city listed in the Wikipedia article. * Go to a few travel web-sites and make a list of all of every geographical feature/monument/locality pertaining to the city listed in the web-site. * Go to Google books, find some good travel, geography or history books and make a list of all of every geographical feature/monument/locality pertaining to the city listed in them. Best of all, use all three methods to create the list. The aim is to make the GA COTM of the month - [[Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi]] - into a GA and to provide discussion/learning tips/clarify doubts to the participating editors during the process. Three young editors have opted in for the class: * User:Rangilo Gujarati * User:Arnavchaudhary * User:Debastein Another user, User.Nick.me may also join us. Anyone is welcome. We need three to begin, we got three, so we begin tomorrow. Posts on this topic initiated by me will be prefixed GA Master Class, so if you are not interested, please do not feel obligated to read.
