Hello Everyone!
This month, Gateway of India
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway_of_India>was selected as the
collaboration
of the month <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:INCOTM> and
Tripura<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripura>for GA/FA of the month.
It's sad that there has been no significant participation for both the
articles apart from some contribs by a couple of editors.
I just wan't to know from the community if we are going wrong in the
article selection itself. Editors vote for an article during the nomination
period but don't show up again.
We have experienced editors but what we are getting out of the
collaborations is minor editing, grammatical corrections and stuff. That is
also equally important as we are contributing to an encyclopedia. But at
the same time, the article also needs to be expanded to make the
collaboration successful. Tripura has had new additions but Gateway of
India is lacking some quality edits.
I have been trying my best to get new editors and this month, we have
User:Jobin
RV <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jobin_RV>as a major contributor for
both the articles. But what about the experienced folks and the ones who
have been involved in previous collaborations?
As a volunteer coordinator for this WikiProject, I would like to know the
reason behind the sudden fall in the participation (since last month) so
that we can figure out something to make the process better and to get
successful collaborations.
Warm Regards,
Pratik Lahoti

Hi Folks
Reminder about the IRC today (9pm IST on Thursday April 5th) Do join us using this link: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#wikimedia-office.
Here is what we would like to discuss today - which we shall do for the first 45 minutes and then throw it open for 15 minutes for any other topics that anyone wants to discuss related to India Program.
You may have noticed that we are increasing our emphasis on Wikisource. Please see Shiju's post on using simple technology to support digitazation (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Program/Indic_Languages/Digitization_o…) and Noopur's story of the Gujarati Wikisource (http://blog.wikimedia.in/2012/04/04/realizing-the-dreams-of-communities-3-y…)
In addition, Shiju has been engaged with other communities on how to start or accelerate their respective language Wikisources.
Wikisource has some very important characteristics that make it attractive.
> It's a (relatively) easier way for newbies to start contributing than the respective Wikipedia
> It's a great way to reach out to language lovers - and love for a language is an important motivator for contribution (on this and other projects)
> There is a much lower gender gap on Wikisource, and it's easy for a wider age group to contribute
> It's more "accessible" as an entry point to newbies because it has less policies than other projects
> It's can act as a gateway to other projects
In today's IRC, we'd like to talk through the work that's happening on Wikisource by many communities, discuss best practices and provide a channel of support for anyone interested in joining the project from any language.
Speak soon.

I was lucky enough to get to go to Arunachal Pradesh. One of my
friends, could not go to the Northeast Regional Institute of Science
and Technology (NERIST) so he recommended me instead. The NERIST
wanted a speaker on Wikipedia and he recommended me for which I am
deeply grateful. They sent me an air ticket and off I went....

Dear Wikipedia contributors,
Your valuable opinions are needed regarding users' motivations to contribute to Wikipedia. This topic is currently investigated by Audrey Abeyta, an undergraduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara. You can read a more detailed description of the project here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Motivations_to_Contribute_to_Wikipe…
Those willing to participate in this study will complete a brief online questionnaire, which is completely anonymous and will take approximately ten minutes. The questionnaire can be accessed here: https://us1.us.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8ixU9RkozemzC4s.
If you have any questions or concerns about this study, please contact Audrey Abeyta at audrey.abeyta(a)gmail.com.

Hello Wikipedians!
A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._P._J._Abdul_Kalam>was the article
selected for the INCOTM for the month of March 2012. Here’s
a short report of how things went by.
During the period under question, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam had 205 edits from
32 contributors. The number of contributors were more this time, though the
contribs from regular members were missing. Some of the improvements were-
- Size increased from 1808 words to 2401 words (fair enough).
- Improvements were made to some of the pre-existing sections like
"Career as scientist", "Awards & Honours".
- New sections - "Presidency", "Popular culture" were added to the
article.
- Reference count shooted up from 31 to 73 (which is a great
achievement).
- An image of him with Vladamir
Putin<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladamir_Putin>was added.
- Internal links and grammar were also improved.
However,
- I feel that more work could have been done in this COTM. Some of the
regular members were missing this time. Remember, APJ had got 11 votes.
- More images could have been added considering the popularity of the
subject.
- There was very less activity in the latter half of the month. Perhaps,
I missed the feel of *collaboration* over there.
Anyway, the top editors of A. P. J. Abdul
Kalam<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._P._J._Abdul_Kalam>for the month
March 2012 were:
- Hisham <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Hisham>
- Karthikndr <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Karthikndr>
- Kondicherry <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kondicherry>
With toolserver down, I’m not stating the number of edits made by these
folks. To encourage contribution, they have been awarded a barnstar for
taking time and effort to participate. It was all Karthikndr + Kondicherry
show in the beginning and Hisham chipped in towards the end with what he
does best :). I shall be sending WikiLoves to other contributors as well. :)
All in all, a fair enough COTM. Hoping for some healthy editing on the next
month's COTM - Gateway of
India<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway_of_India>and the GA/FA
article of the month -
Tripura <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripura>.
Happy collaborating guys!
Cheers,
Pratik Lahoti

While the previous efforts for consensus have failed to make a policy on
the Notability of the Schools (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_%28schools%29 ),
It may be a good idea for us to work on some guidelines on Indian Schools
under [[WP:INDIA]] perspective.
While many of the reputed schools in India have probably larger notability
( but no articles on them) than many schools in the west that have full
fledged Wikipedia articles , we should seriously look at this situation.
I am not sure of this particular school, but a school since 1945 might be
really notable. But in India, we have a bigger problem of inadequacy of
online references. We tend to think as if it isn't on Google, it probably
doesn't exist.
Just my 2 1/4 paisa.
