Library Lab could be teaching space where guest learn to post to wikipedia, by using equipment at MLKJ Library Lab, Then instead of complex Field Trips journalism, just use MLKJ Library resources. Maybe Old Books, Out of Date for Copyright, yet of intrest. Volunteer Reads book, looks online for info & if needed, Write own Critical page & include some good illustrations or photos from work. maybe several books from library shelves & article upon subject.
so good that 100 other similar library lab projects feed into wikipedia. if program shuts down at MLKJ Library, maybe apply to Library of Congress for Room, think available across street from maiin laibrary. Have volunteers get library reach card, from new library in basement. kind of spify. maybe move to intown University library at some point & use those resources. if each person did one aceptable article, after learning how, could work from home & document some rare book from own collection.
Hoping to attend at least one gathering before new year.

I do reccommend that moving forward we build the site in a CMS... I'm familiar with Drupal's calendar module, it would work.
I'll be away from the internets this weekend. Talk to you all soon!

The site's up now and looking just splendid. Many thanks to Nate and Noll&Tam for the web and design work. Now we just need a way for people to sign up as fans of the site -- a FB like button? :-)
Web coding request: A calendar to see / schedule events is definitely needed. Can someone on the list help us set one up?
Also: I've attached a favicon. We should add one; this isn't perfect (a full 2px white border would be better) but may be ok as a stopgap.

Here's an update on the LibLab project:
- The DC LibLab is getting going, recruiting volunteers, including but
not
limited to Wiki DC folks. We're also reaching out to related open knowledge, tech, GLAM folks, etc. (and can use help spreading the word)
- Our first event at LibLab is on Saturday, 11 am : we're doing an
OpenStreetMap mapping workshop "party". The requirements are minimal so it's a good way to get the space going. Everyone is welcome to join, no prior knowledge or GPS required.
- We have a wiki page: http://wikidc.org/wiki/LibLab where I've been
putting some more concrete ideas on what to do with the LibLab space.
- We're also setting up a public facing website which will present the
LibLab concept and can help us get the word out (a blog + calendar
maybe?)
about what's happening at LibLab DC. The site will be at
librarylab.org
In all, the space is pretty awesome... it's very visible from the
street, a
great opportunity to help make the library a cool, fun, educational
place,
do GLAM outreach + local outreach and reach diverse populations. We can
run
any number of wikipedia-related events and workshops over the months
ahead.
The head of the DCPL is very supportive, and if the space is successful, some elements could be made permanent (after renovations of the space in January).
We still need more people to help out and help spread the word.
Cheers, Katie

Our first event at the Library Lab is tomorrow! We're holding an OpenStreetMap party, starting at 11 am.
No prior knowledge, no GPS, etc. required. Wikimedians are most welcome to join and help kick off the Library Lab, with the first event.

I'd like to invite you to join for a mapping party this Saturday,
September
3 at the Martin Luther King Jr. DC Public Library. We will meet at 11 am
in
the LibLab (Library Lab), which is in the corner, on the first floor, in
the
Business & Technology room.
We will be mapping the downtown DC / Chinatown / Penn Quarter areas,
which
have changed a lot since our last mapping party in the area, and still
have
more detail to add. We will also be training library staff and new
mappers
about OSM.
We would like to make these mapping parties an ongoing thing this Fall, initially at MLK and, if it goes well, at the branch libraries and to involve youths in mapping.
Cheers, Katie
