Education Foundation will join the Simons Foundation at the annual meeting
for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), on
February 13th and 14th in DC, where they will host several Wikipedia
edit-a-thons.
They're looking for DC-area community members who are interested in
attending the event to moderate 1–4 of the sessions. The Simons Foundation
will cover the registration cost for any moderators, so you'll also be able
to attend other parts of the conference that weekend.

Hello,
Please come to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library Center for Accessibility, room 215, on Saturday January 23rd from 1pm to 4pm to participate in a discussion on the accessibility of Wikipedia.
This discussion will bring together panels of stake holders to try to define the problem and to discuss best practices for solutions. This is an opportunity to create a plan for accessibility development. A first panel will address Wikipedia governance, authoring process, metadata, styles, templates etc. and a second panel will respond and address accessibility including keyboard access, alt text, color contrast, captioning, description and how to meet challenges. There will also be a presentation on what is necessary for good alt text and a list of pages with images needing alt text. A question and answer session will follow.
If you need accommodation to attend this program, including American Sign Language Interpretation, please contact the DC Public Library as early as possible. Their accommodation statement is: http://dclibrary.org/node/2095 .
Thanks,
James

Hello everyone!
There's already been a lot of inspiring reactions to the the Year of
Science, so I'm delighted to say that the Wiki Education Foundation (Wiki
Ed) is officially launching our Year of Science work in the USA and Canada
today.
There's a blog post pointing to the work we're doing:
https://wikiedu.org/blog/2016/01/19/wikipedia-year-of-science/
There's our Year of Science page for academics and their institutions,
describing what we're doing and how to contact us:
http://wikiedu.org/yearofscience/
And finally, we're handing over the reigns to the Wikipedia Year of Science
Portal to community members, so they can share ideas, news and events
related to the WP:YOS (that's a shortcut! or):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Year_of_Science
We'd love to see what chapters and projects can do with this theme, so
please spread the word freely! We're also hoping people will use
#yearofscience or #YoS when they do.
We're looking forward to seeing what we can all do together.
(Apologies for cross-posting).

Good Morning,
On Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 1-3pm, we are having an open house and the
Innovation
Hub <http://www.archives.gov/innovation-hub/> at the National Archives in
Washington, DC. As many of you know, we have a strong collaboration and
partnership with Wikimedia DC and it's a great opportunity to learn more
about our efforts. If you haven't been down to see the Wikipedia Space
<http://www.archives.gov/innovation-hub/wikipedia-space.html> this is a
great opportunity as well. Attached is a flyer with more information.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Also, please see the YouTube video we created at the Archives during the
editathon we hosted in December: https://youtu.be/CVIGfA0WqI8
Thanks,

Hi everyone,
I have had a sudden work conflict and won't be able to speak on a panel on
March 11 2016 in Seattle at the Art Libraries Society of North America
annual conference.
You would be presenting about OpenGLAM/GLAM-Wiki and IMAGE use/freeing
images/etc.
Read the description here:
https://arlisnavra2016.sched.org/event/4NyB/unlocking-images-ideas-and-cont…
This is not a paid speaking engagement. You will be responsible for finding
your own funding to attend. Bring swag, promote the concept. I'm happy to
be a supporter of your funding request no matter where you seek funds.
This is a big conference with thousands of folks involved in art museums
and libraries.
A great opportunity. Please contact me off list if you have interest in
attending. ASAP. I need to get this sorted out by the end of the month.
Thanks,
Sarah
