Subject: Updates on potential sponsorship for UofMD FemBot edit-a-thon?
To: wikimedia-dc-internal(a)googlegroups.com
Hi there,
I sent an email last week asking about the process to request sponsorship
for the annual FemBot Edit-a-Thon, which this year is at the University of
Maryland. This is my fifth time hosting this annual event and this could be
the first time we actually have a chapter sponsor!
Here is who is sponsoring us so far:
African American History, Culture, and Digital Humanities (AADHum)
Initiative
The College of Arts and Humanities
Department of Communication, UMD-CP
Department of English, UMD-CP
Department of Women’s Studies, UMD-CP
Digital Systems and Stewardship, University of Maryland Libraries
Feminist Majority Foundation
LGBT Equity Center
Maryland Institute of Technology in the Humanities
Ms. Magazine
It's a two day event and I'm totally down for WM DC to display banners and
swag, and we'd love a financial sponsorship for refreshments or food of
some sort.
I'll also be in Washington from March 10-15. I haven't heard from anyone so
I'm hoping a few of you are available for a drink.
Sarah

Hi everyone,
Thank annual FemBot edit-a-thon is now taking place at the University of
Maryland, after being on the west coast for the past few years. I
facilitate the edit-a-thon each year.
It's a two day event, March 9-10.
Would Wikmedia DC be interested in sponsoring both or either event days?
I'm not sure how the process works, but, it would be great to partner!
I've attached an overview of the event and I'm creating an on-wiki event
page today.
On a personal note, I'll be in Washington DC for pleasure March 11-15. I
have a friend visiting with me from California, too. I look forward to
perhaps connecting with a few of you.
I prefer to use email over other systems of communication, but I'm happy to
schedule a conference call or Hangout if needed re: sponsorship. If you
message me on Facebook or Twitter, I most likely won't respond.
Thank you!

Hi Wikimedia DC folks,
As a part of the Year of Science
<https://wikiedu.org/blog/2016/01/19/wikipedia-year-of-science/>, the Wiki
Education Foundation will join the Simons Foundation at the annual meeting
for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), on
February 13th and 14th in DC, where they will host several Wikipedia
edit-a-thons.
They're looking for DC-area community members who are interested in
attending the event to moderate 1–4 of the sessions. The Simons Foundation
will cover the registration cost for any moderators, so you'll also be able
to attend other parts of the conference that weekend.
*Location*
Marriott Wardman Park
<http://www.marriott.com/hotels/maps/travel/wasdt-washington-marriott-wardma…>
*Schedule*
- Session 1: February 13th, 10am–1pm
- Session 2: February 13th, 1:30pm–4:30pm
- Session 3: February 14th, 10am–1pm
- Session 4: February 14th, 1:30pm–4:30pm
Interested parties can find more information about the events and how to
apply to be a moderator on the AAAS website

I hope to see you in DC in a few weeks to bring more scientists to
Wikipedia!

Hello,
Please come to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library Center for Accessibility, room 215, on Saturday January 23rd from 1pm to 4pm to participate in a discussion on the accessibility of Wikipedia.
This discussion will bring together panels of stake holders to try to define the problem and to discuss best practices for solutions. This is an opportunity to create a plan for accessibility development. A first panel will address Wikipedia governance, authoring process, metadata, styles, templates etc. and a second panel will respond and address accessibility including keyboard access, alt text, color contrast, captioning, description and how to meet challenges. There will also be a presentation on what is necessary for good alt text and a list of pages with images needing alt text. A question and answer session will follow.
If you need accommodation to attend this program, including American Sign Language Interpretation, please contact the DC Public Library as early as possible. Their accommodation statement is: http://dclibrary.org/node/2095 .
Thanks,
James
