Reminider: Accessibility Hackathon 2 will be this Saturday Nov 10th from 9:30AM to 5:30PM in room 215 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. The DC Do-It-Yourself Fair for people with and without disabilities will be next Saturday Nov 17th and Sunday Nov 18th in the Great Hall of the MLK library. Details are below.
DIY (Do It Yourself) Fair for People with and without Disabilities
On Saturday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 18 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Adaptive Services Division of the DC Public Library will host a DIY (Do It Yourself) Fair in the Great Hall of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G St. NW. The DIY Fair will be a celebration of creativity for people with and without disabilities.
You can register for the DIY Fair through Eventbrite.
This event is inspired by Maker Faires. Typical exhibits from Maker Faires in other cities include robotics, 3-D printing, open source computers, gaming, crafts and performances. Some of the exhibits that will be on display at this DIY Fair include the first-ever permanent Ablegamers.org Accessibility Arcade @ DC Public Library gaming station, which just opened up in the Adaptive Services Division; an adapted Snap Circuits project with Braille tagging, 3-D printing, robotics and an open-source technology computer display.
Some participating organizations:
· HAC DC
· United Cerebral Palsy LifeLabs
· BroadBand Bridge
· Kids and Technology
· Robots in DC
· Fab Lab DC
· AARP
This event is also inspired by the annual AccessibilityCamp unconference, which has been held at the library since 2009. Unconferences are participant-driven meetings that try to avoid the high fees, sponsored presentations and top-down organization of conventional conferences by being mostly self-organized.
Because of the location, electrical outlets will be very hard to come by, so if you have any electronics to display please try to make sure they are battery-powered. Exhibitors will get a table and two chairs in the Great Hall.
If you have questions about physical access, need handouts in alternate format, or require American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation or other reasonable accommodation to participate, please contact lbph.dcpl@dc.gov or by telephone: 202-727-2142
Accessibility Hackathon 2 will bring together people with disabilities, and software and other developers to produce accessibility solutions, and to provide mentorship.
The event will take place from 9:30AM to 5:30PM, on Saturday November 10th, in room 215 Adaptive Services at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G Street NW, Washington DC, 20001.
SimpleEmotion.com's president, Gabriel Forsythe y Korzeniewicz will be present to introduce participants to their software that recognizes emotions in spoken audio content. SimpleEmotion is opening their API so that developers can build accessibility solutions. The Adaptive Services Division community has suggested a number of solutions listed at this page: http://www.wikimediadc.org/wiki/Accessibility_hackathon2
Please also see our list of suggested solutions from last year: http://www.wikimediadc.org/wiki/Accessibility_hackathon
This event is related to DC Week, a city-wide tech festival that brings together developers, goverment and nonprofits. DC Week developers are invited to come to the event.
Another project will be to create a list of open source and easy to use adaptive technologies that can go on refurbished computers.
Antoher project will be to create an accessible snap circuits kit using Braille, LargePrint and editing a manual for cognitive accessibility.
Please feel free to suggest other solutions at: http://www.wikimediadc.org/wiki/Accessibility_hackathon2
