More frequent social meetups, yes. But I think they should still be organized by someone(s) each time, and not necessarily in the same place.

When I was living in Boston, my experience with these meetups was mixed. It's nice to know where and when to go, and it's better than having no meetups organized at all. But this is really just a meetup.com page that is set up to send out a notice to all the subscribers at the same time each month. If few no people happen to be able to make it that month, no one sets up an on-wiki signup list and nothing much happens. More than once, I showed up at the regular time and place, and no one was there.

Of course, Boston is generally a little less organized than things are in DC. :-)
