Hi all, I just wanted to say that I think I might be able to find some
space at the Library of Congress for the 01/02 meeting if you are
looking for any. Katie saw the space (at a Django Meetup) that's
typically available in the Madison Building, which is close to the
Capitol South Metro Station. The room fits up to about 40 people, and
there's a projector and public wi-fi. The only thing I would need to
figure out is if it is available on the weekend. Let me know what you
think.

As you may know, Wikipedia's 10th anniversary (WikiX) is coming up soon...
Jan 15th. Wikimedia Foundation is encouraging folks to organize special
events and celebrations for that occasion.

Wikimedia NYC is organizing something on Jan 15th. At our last meetup in
November, Kat suggested we do something the following weekend (Jan 22). WMF
board member Phoebe Ayers will be able to join us on that date, plus perhaps
Wikimedia NYC folks and others.
Coincidentally, the National Archives (NARA) has approached us about
possibly working with us and would like at some point to get a "Wikipedian
in Residence". Let's see what our capacity is as a group to support so many
partnerships, but as a first step, they would like to host our group for a
special WikiX meetup / event.
Exact details for WikiX DC yet to be determined, but it could include a
special tour + discussions / talks. NARA will get back to us soon with some
more specific ideas, we can discuss, give feedback and try to finalize
something.

PS - anyone who wants to help with organizing meetups, WikiX, and/or other
events, that would be welcome!
Of course, edit counts are not a true metric on wikipedia, but the
public policy initiative has a leaderboard to help encourage folks.
It gives some idea how things are going -- apparently very very well
at Georgetown University! Yay!
Unfortunately, things aren't quite as well with the GWU courses, and
you can see the other schools and courses listed.

In summary, we talked about:
1) Social media outreach for the fundraiser, and beyond that for when we
reach the fundraising target. Let's use social media and outreach to engage
with people and encourage more contributions (e.g. edits). Swatjester will
follow-up with more info on this.
2) Public policy initiative - how's it going, what's up for the Spring
semester?
3) Smithsonian collaboration - it's continuing, working with Smithsonian
American Art Museum on article collaboration, strong possibility for us to
work with Archives of American Art, we have more contacts elsewhere w/in the
Smithsonian and can connect people
4) Holocaust museum wants to work with Wikipedia, perhaps bring in an intern
to work on Wikipedia
5) National Archives is another important collaboration possibility, via the
FedFlix project and has lots of potential, with people high up in NARA
supporting FedFlix and have approached us to see how they can engage with us
more directly in cool ways
6) User:Econterms and a colleague from the Bureau of Labor Statistics talked
about how they might contribute data to Wikipedia, as "Economy of Virginia"
or such state infoboxes.
7) Wikipedia's 10th birthday is coming up in January. We are talking about
doing something special to celebrate, perhaps the following weekend!
8) Talked about next meetups and future events
9) Talked briefly about Wikimedia DC chapter stuff, trying to gauge where
consensus is (towards having a local group, but find ways to coordinate
regionally and nationally where it makes sense, maybe a loose structure such
as US Chapters Council)
10) Ed Summers (user:edsu) was at the meetup, he works at the Library of
Congress, created the linkypedia tool (http://linkypedia.inkdroid.org/),
etc. He (we agree) suggests the DC area might be ripe for holding a
GLAM-Wiki type symposium to bring folks together. He also says he's willing
to host us for meetups!
11) We also have contacts in Baltimore, with historic preservation folks,
who are interested in doing a Wikipedia Takes Baltimore event (photographing
historic sites)
Wow, that's a lot... that's why I think more regular meetups are a good
idea. We might not be able to do all these things but if we get enough
people involved, we can do a lot and much as possible.

Reminder that we have a Wikipedia meetup on Wednesday evening. It's 7-9pm
(though I will be there early) and we'll do it at Cosi @ Metro Center, 700
11th Street NW (12th & G St NW)
We won't do formal presentations but can do discussions of the agenda topics
(or any topics you bring and want to discuss). There's a lot going and
plenty to talk about:
* Wikimedia DC, next steps, what do we want and how?
* Wikimedia Public Policy initiative
* Smithsonian collaboration, how's it going, what's next
* Collaboration with the National Archives & FedFlix project
* Discuss about the Wikimedia Fundraiser
* Discuss your topics!
If we want to do weekday meetups again (do we?) we could try it in January
and I think we'll be able to get formal meetup space to do presentations. I
would love to get Smithsonian people and such to participate, which I think
might be more unlikely on a weekend, but who knows???
Next month we can do a social meetup on a Saturday or Sunday, Dec 18th or

There is lots going on in the DC area for Wikimedia and enough things to
discuss that I think we should do more regular meetups. I propose we try
doing monthly meetups, and rotate between weeknights (w/ talks, discussions)
and weekends (at a restaurant, socializing only).
I propose the next meetup be on November 17th, in the evening (~7-9pm) at
some place near the metro (I'm looking into it). If this goes well, we can
make it a regularly thing, supplementing our social meetups.
Topics for discussion or as short presentations can include:
* Smithsonian collaboration
* Wikimedia public policy initiative
* Discuss how to move forward with formalizing Wikimedia DC. (as a local,
separate chapter or local affiliate of a regional chapter? pros/cons, next
steps)
* Wikimedia fundraiser
* your topic ...

Hey all,
Unfortunately I will not be able to attend this one, however, if we are
still doing it, I want to make sure the planning is moving forward. I saw
the project page hasn't made many changes recently, where are we at
logistically? (It's about 2 weeks out from the proposed date.)
