Saturday is open house day at the European embassies in DC! Who all is
interested in doing some pre-meetup touring of the embassies?
Depending on the interest, we could:
1) meet at Dupont Circle in the morning (9:45-10am) and tour 15 embassies
along and around Embassy Row, all together as a single group.
2) we could organize it into a Wikis Take the Embassies sort of thing, split
up into groups and cover more embassies with us going around getting photos,
including the interior of the embassies and the outside (some embassy
articles can use better photos, some don't have any!). One group could
cover Embassy Row and the other group cover the embassies in/around
Georgetown (Spain, Sweden, France, Germany)
3) if time allows or we want a third group, we could hit some of the
embassies (Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic) near Van
Ness/Tenleytown in the afternoon before the meetup.
Wiki Takes ___ events are sometimes competitive, and we could to that, but
not necessary and I'm in favor of it being non-competitive.
Here is more info:
http://europe-in-dc.comhttp://www.eurunion.org/eu/images/stories/2011ophsebrochure-map.pdf
I'm adding a signup place on our meetup page for these.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC_17
(oh, and Wikis Take the Embassies Part II could be the following weekend,
May 14, when the non-EU embassies do their open house. Any interest?)
Cheers,
Katie
Together with Liam Wyatt, Sarah Stierch, and other Wikipedians, we've been
thinking how to facilitate more and better collaborations with cultural
institutions.
As the campus ambassadors program has gone well, some of the ideas might
transfer well, having online and "campus" / GLAM ambassadors help train and
mentor GLAM institution staff about contributing to Wikipedia, facilitate
content donations (e.g. photos), etc.
In DC, there has been tremendous interest, from the Smithsonian, National
Archives, Library of Congress, US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and more. This
is fabulous! but we need to recruit more GLAM ambassador folks.
We're still thinking about how these roles could work and welcome input:
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Wikimedians
Also, Liam is organizing GLAMCamp NYC the weekend of May 20-22 and have room
for ~2-3 or so Wikipedians from DC to join. It's a working meeting to think
through and discuss the GLAM ambassador idea, improve documentation,
tech/tool needs, and other things.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAMcamp_NYC
Anyone who is interested in being a GLAM ambassador (or just helping out)
and/or attending GLAMcamp NYC, please let me know.
Cheers,
Katie
Hi,
I'm planning (tentatively) to attend both of these events which are in
DC on consecutive weekends:
* http://transparencycamp.org/ April 30-May 1
* http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-dc/2011-April/000181.html
WM-DC meetup and incorporation mtg May 7th
I'm considering staying the whole week in between in DC (~April
28th-May 8th) and seeking couches/floors/cheap rentals/etc. if people
have spare room or know someone or have a lead on a good deal. (for
all or subsets of that time range)
Please reply to me directly if you have space, a referral or suggestion.
Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

Our next meetup is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 3:30-5:30 pm at the
Tenleytown Library, followed by dinner & socializing at some nearby place.
This is the first official meeting of our proposed Wikimedia DC chapter,
with discussion of bylaws and next steps.
Other agenda items include:
* Update everyone on our successful Wikimania bid, discuss what's next in
the planning process, most importantly including sponsorships and finalizing
arrangements with the venue, as well as keynote speaker ideas and media
outreach.
* Discuss upcoming activities that we want to do over the summer and fall
* Update on our cultural institution "GLAM" outreach & collaborations.
* Eat & socialize afterwards!
Tenleytown Library (newly built & modern) is located adjacent to the
Tenleytown metro station, on the red line, with a wi-fi equipped meeting
room for us.

Subject: [Wikimania-l] Wikimania 2012 Awarded to Washington, DC
To: "Wikimania general list (open subscription)" <
wikimania-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
The Wikimania jury are pleased to announce that they have selected
Washington, D.C., USA as the location for Wikimania 2012[0]. The DC team
presented an imaginative and exciting bid[1] that the jurors found
impressive. As before, all the bids to host Wikimania had strong points in
their favour and making this decision was difficult. We will send detailed
feedback to each of the bids, but for now we know the winning team will
appreciate the community's support and help in making a great Wikimania in
2012. The jury particularly thanks the other finalist in the process, the
South African team[2] for their excellent work, and encourages them to bid
again in the near future.
If you have never been to a Wikimania before I would urge you to consider
attending. This year the conference will be in Haifa, Israel[3], and
promises to be an excellent event. Wikimania is always a great way to meet
members of our global community and help improve the movement, and
Washington DC looks to be a worthy successor.
Our congratulations to the Washington DC team and many thanks to all of the
bidders for working so hard. I encourage all bidders to use the fantastic
energy they have put into their bids by hosting smaller continental or
regional events, and considering another bid for Wikimania in the future.
The jury welcomes looks forward to discussing the result and the Wikimania
process with the community.

@filbertkm
Hi everyone,
This past Monday myself and Katie Filbert (User:Aude) spoke at the
IGNITE Smithsonian gathering featuring 20 speakers. We were the only
Wiki-related folks and had the pleasure of creating a fast paced five
minute presentation about our work. It was rather chaotic, as these
talks always are!
All went well and we were able to connect with a lot of great people.
I've written a super short blog entry about it, but, it features the
PowerPoint and a link to the presentation video.
http://museumintern.blogspot.com/ <http://museumintern.blogspot.com/>
Thank you Katie for allowing me to jump on to co-present.
We're also hoping to encourage further involvement from Wikipedians in
GLAM/SI. You can join the project here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/SI
We are working on planning another workshop soon and our relationship
with the Archives of American Art is expanding this summer and Fall! The
National Archives will soon have a Wikipedian-in-Residence and I'm
hoping that will lead to backstage pass tours and other exciting
opportunities for our group.
GLAM/SI looks forward to your involvement =)

It's time for another meetup, with purpose of talking about plans for
forming a local DC area Wikimedia chapter, and Wikimania (should our bid be
selected). We'll probably meet at one of the local libraries (e.g.
Tenleytown), followed by socializing somewhere.
We need a decision (date/time/place) on a meetup and think it's best to get
your input to help pick the date:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/DC_17#Straw_poll
Looking further out, we're tentatively planning another meetup on June 11 at
NARA 2 in College Park. (shuttle bus available from College Park metro and
we can also carpool)
Cheers,
Katie
