Greetings,
#1Lib1Ref is happening again in May!
It is an annual campaign where librarians add references to improve Wikipedia, is coming back again this year, running from May 15th to June 5th, 2018. It is being run for the second time from this year because we heard from you a desire to run it again out of excitement. Librarians, community members, and affiliates are encouraged to make 1Lib1Ref [their own]. Hello,
Wikipedia Education programme at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) began in
2013 with a goal of piloting Wikipedia as a pedagogic tool for the
undergraduate students. Both the educators of the WEP and of the university
were new to one such approach. But inside an institution that sees over 20K
new faces every year, educating students on creating Wikipedia articles and
enhancing the same was very exciting. Students of five Indian
languages--Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil, and Urdu--were chosen as these
languages were taught as second languages for many students. During the
first and second year, almost all the students created new Wikipedia
articles where the majority of the articles were below accepted standard.
The difficulty in making students learn about input tools in their
languages, Wikipedia basics, and wiki markup pushed for creating "how-to"
video tutorials in Hindi and Kannada. Working with Urdu was discontinued
after the second year because of program staff exit. Slowly, the program
was reoriented in a manner that new students learned native language input
and markup for the first two semesters by digitizing books on Wikisource
and later by editing Wikipedia articles during the next two semesters. This
helped better the output by increasing the quality of articles by nearly
30%. From 2015 the program was further improved by helping students get
more hands-on training of input, wiki markup by intensive typing during the
first semester, a few advanced options like interacting with each other on
user talk page during the second semester, moving to Wikipedia editing and
developing articles on Wikipedia sandbox during third semester, and finally
moving the articles by peer-review from fellow batchmates, faculty and the
larger Wikipedia community. The faculty is involved in the development and
on-wiki review process ensuring quality.
The program so far has gone to the level of producing about 70% very good
quality articles where nearly 0.6% of the articles are of really poor
quality. The female to male ratio is surprisingly equal and at times, there
are more female students as compared to the male ones. However, there is
little concern in integrating the student-Wikimedians to the larger
Wikimedia community.
Also, there is little exchange of learning and best practices between
cross-language outreach programs across India across several different
languages. One of the ways to better this process is making program leaders
talk to each other.

Greetings,
As you are aware that the Conference and Event Grant for "Wikigraphists Bootcamp (2018 India)" has been proposed for training on SVGs, illustrations, digital cartography etc. earlier in March. After review and discussion, a few changes have been suggested to the program. Please go through the changes, and comment at: https://goo.gl/tdmMGo.
Also, kindly put forward the kind of illustrations that you or your community is in need of. For example; illustrations of animals, scientific instruments, automobiles etc. This help us frame the program and also understand the need of illustration skills required.
As the suggestions are to assessed, and relevant changes are to be made to the proposal, this discussion will be open till seven days from now i.e. 12 April 2018.
Best,
Krishna Chaitanya Velaga
Greetings,
I am happy to introduce you to the Featured Wikimediam for April 2018, Sangram Keshari Senapati (User:Ssgapu22<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Ssgapu22>) from Odia Wikimedia community.
Sangram is an active Odia Wikimedian from Bhadrk, Odisha. Sangram was introduced to Wikipedia by his senior at college. He later signed up, and created two articles on English Wikipedia. Upon knowing about Odia Wikipedia, he started contributing to it. But as his writing skills were not good, he used to proofread works on Odia Wikisource, and from that experience he learnt the exact pattern of writing in Odia. He recalls that users MKar and Psubhashish greatly helped him during his initial days.
>From his contributions, it can be said that Sangram is an ambassador of #100Wikidays challenge. After having participated in Rathajatra Edit-a-thon, Nabakalebara Edit-a-thon, and Wikipedia Asian Month in 2016 & 2017, he decided to regularly commit himself towards improving the coverage of information on Odia Wikipedia. His first challenge was #100WikiWomanDays<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100WikiWomenDays>, which he started on 8 March 2017 i.e. International Women's Day. Having successfully completed it on 15 June, he took up another #100Wikidays<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100wikidays(2nd_Challenge)> on 13 July. Immediately after its completion 20 October, he took up his third challenge<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100wikidays(3rd_Challenge)> on 21 October, and completed it on 28 January 2018. As this journey continues, he is now amid of his fourth Challenge<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ssgapu22/100wikidays(4th_Challenge)>, which was started on 29 January. With these, he aspires to complete his WikiYear some day.
Sangram is a graduate in Computer Science and Engineering, and is now working as an editor at an Odia magazine. He also an avid photographer, and maintains a photography club. He advocates that new editors need to focus on learning the rules of Wikipedia, and contribute to good quality articles.
Wishing him all the best to to complete his WikiYear;
Best,
Krishna Chaitanya Velaga
