Dear Community,
We are thrilled to share some exciting news with you! For those who
attended our last live session, you’re already in the loop. I hope that the
rest of you are as excited as we are about this.
Our developers enabled InstaCommons
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/InstantCommons> as an extension for
Wikibase Cloud.
What does this mean?
You can now effortlessly reference files from Wikimedia Commons directly in
your Wikibase. This means you can upload your images to Commons and easily
integrate them into your Wikibase whenever you need to.
How to make use of it:
1.
Upload Your Media File to Wikimedia Commons
Visit Wikimedia Commons Upload Wizard
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard> and upload
your media file.
2.
Create a New Property
In your Wikibase, create a new property with the data type “Commons
media file”.
3.
Add a Statement to an Item
Select the property you created in step 2 and add a statement to an
item. Type the filename of the media you want to reference on Wikimedia
Commons. For example, to reference the image “Felis_catus-cat_on_snow.jpg”,
search for it on Commons.
Example Image Reference: Felis_catus-cat_on_snow.jpg
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Felis_catus-cat_on_snow.jpg>
We hope this new feature empowers you to add visual context to your
stories. Your feedback and wishes continue to shape the future of Wikibase
Cloud, and we’re excited to see how you’ll use this update.
Wishing you an inspiring start to your week!
Looking forward to connecting soon,
Valerie

Dear Community,
I shared this research before but wanted to shed light on it again.
Have you already looked at the outcomes of our Knowledge Equity in Linked
Open Data Research
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Summary_of_findings_on_Knowledge_Eq…>?
Users who engage with Wikidata and Wikibase taught us more about their
needs as well as their ideas to foster a Linked Open Data web that holds
space for pluralities of knowledge.
You can learn more about their perspectives and identified opportunities in
this comprehensive presentation of outcomes:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Summary_of_findings_on_Knowledge_Eq…
If you would like to have more conversations about knowledge equity, please
let me know, so I can take note of you and come up with a format in which
we can dive into this together in more depth.
Have a lovely rest of the week!

Dear Community,
here's an interesting event coming up, especially for those of you working
with languages. :-)
This weekend there's going to be the *Wikidata Lexicodays*.
During the event there will be presentations, discussions and workshops for
users that are interested in Lexicodata or work with it already.
In this event, you will learn how to describe and model words in Wikidata,
discover useful tools to edit lexicographical data, and improve modelling
in various languages, with a focus on languages in Indonesia.
The event is taking place online across different time zones.
See event page here:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Events/Lexicodays_2024
Enjoy :-)

Hi,
What are the ways to "use" items from Wikidata on our custom Wikibase in
the cloud? I can see that Federation probably doesn't work for items.[1]
Special:Import always ends up with an error, and QuickStatemets are
probably not suitable for that. Is there a WikibaseImport or
WikibaseIntegrator available for the cloud?
We have items that need to have a value for Wikidata's P131. So it seems to
me that the easiest way would be to import some of the "locations" to our
Wikibase. Dont know if it is a good idea to set URL as a value for P131 and
link it to Wikidata!
Regards,
Jan

Hey everyone,
We would like to learn more about why users choose Wikibase over Wikidata.
We set up this very short and comprehensive survey:
https://wikimedia.sslsurvey.de/Choosing-Wikibase.
Please fill it in when you can.
Thanks so much for your help!

It's that time again - the May meeting of the Wikibase Community User Group! This is your chance to present what you've been doing recently, or ask questions of other members, as well as find out what's going on in Wikibase.
If you're new to the community, you can get to know other members of the community face-to-face, without leaving the comfort of your home or office. (And if you have to, Jitsi has apps for mobile devices, too.)
As usual, we will be meeting online at https://meet.jit.si/WikibaseLiveSession at 15:00 UTC (16:00 London, 17:00 Berlin), which is just under two hours from now.
The meeting notes are at https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WBUG_2024_05_30 - feel free to add to the agenda if you have anything else you wish to present or discuss.
Hope to see you there,

Dear Wikibase Cloud users,
we have exciting news to share with you!
You mentioned this wish for a longer time already, and I’m pleased to
announce that we came up with something that might solve your need for *greater
transparency* on *current incidents* that might impact your activities on
your Wikibase.
*How so?*
Wikibase Cloud is in its baby steps and still in open beta. We work towards
becoming more stable and reliable, but we do experience hick-ups along the
way.
These hick-ups are often experienced and detected through you or by us.
We wanted to build a *tool that reflects these hick-ups* in* real time* so
that you have a page that you can check whenever you experience unusual
patterns or reactions.
This is why we set up a dedicated status updates page, see
https://wmde.github.io/wikibase-cloud-status/.
This *incident tracker* will most importantly inform you about the
occasions in which you are directly impacted. It will also tell you about
situations that don’t necessarily impact you, but let you learn more about
how the software works and reacts.
We haven’t mentioned that in a while, but we’d like to remind everyone that
we’re working hard towards meeting your needs and offering an
infrastructure that supports you in your endeavors.
Apart from that, we would like to thank you. For being with us, for
spreading the word and for using Wikibase Cloud and thereby working towards
a vision in which we all contribute to the sum of all knowledge.
Have a wonderful rest of the week and see you soon!
Valerie on behalf of Wikibase Cloud
