Hi all,
We (Wikimedia Sverige) have been experimenting with setting up our first
wikibase.cloud instance and a few questions specifically related to the
wikibase.cloud installations cropped up. Thought we’d check with the rest
of you here how you dealt with them.
Firstly we noticed that wikibase.cloud wikis come without interwiki-link
possibilities. This amongst other things makes Special:Import not work
since this requires that an interwiki prefix be provided (to source the
import which is needed for licensing compatibility). In our case we were
planning on importing Template:Q etc. from Wikidata to help with our
on-wiki documentation. Is there a way of setting/enabling such so that
imports (at least from Wikimedia wikis) become possible?
Secondly, and related, is the ability to create sitelinks in the Item and
Properties namespaces. It is unclear if it is at all possible to create
sitelinks from a wikibase.cloud wiki. And if so would it be possible to
point these to Wikimedia wikis or even other wikibase.cloud wikis?
Attempting to add a site link opens a dialogue window where language can be
provided but the language in question does not get resolved to a site.
Lastly, on the Special:NewItem (and Special:NewProperty) page we get the
following message: By clicking "Create", you agree to the terms of use, and
you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the [ None yet
set.]. It is unclear where we would set the license which should go here
($dataRightsUrl?), also where we would set the license for the non-data
namespaces (i.e. $wgRightsUrl), which would have to be CC BY-SA if we want
to import some templates from Wikidata. Interestingly enough,
Special:NewEntitySchema already assumes CC0.
These might not be the standard challenges faced by wikibase.cloud users
but they quickly become quite central to the way we were thinking of using
our instance. Any thoughts, suggestions, pointers to existing bug reports
are welcome.
Cheers,
André

Dear Wikibase Community,
My name is Valerie
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Valerie_Wollinger_(WMDE)> and I’m the
new Community Communications Manager for Wikibase. Mohammed
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Mohammed_Sadat_(WMDE)> has been
taking care not only of Wikidata but also Wikibase. In the future I will
be taking responsibility for the Wikibase community to give Mohammed more
space supporting Wikidata. Thereby I will continue creating an open,
participatory, and collaborative environment for open source software
development.
*How did I get here..?*
At Wikimedia Deutschland, I’m finding myself in an organisation that is
highly supported through community engagement. This choice has also to do
with my own volunteering experiences. For many years, I co-created events
and conferences at the intersection of science, technology and arts.
As I was experiencing societal shifts through digital innovations myself,
festivals such as the Sonic Acts Academy
<https://portal.sonicacts.com/portal>, Impakt Festival <https://impakt.nl/>
or transmediale <https://transmediale.de/> helped me understand the flux of
change in digital culture better and thereby orient my thoughts.
In this time I also co-organized transmediale and CTM
<https://www.ctm-festival.de/>’s Vorspiel <https://vorspiel.berlin/>festival,
a program series in the field of digital art and culture, and experimental
sound and music where many partner venues across Berlin invited local and
international audiences to experience various artistic formats.
I had great fun exploring how data can be used for artistic projects and
creative storytelling. In 2020 I became part of a collaborative research
project, co-funded by the Creative Europe Program. On-The-Fly
<https://onthefly.space/> was designed to promote Live Coding, a
performative technique focused on writing algorithms in real-time. The
project’s objectives were further set up to support knowledge exchanges
between communities, engage with critical reflections as well as promote
free and open-source tools.
Simultaneously, I was striving to create knowledge resources that fostered
collective reflection and education on evolving technological
infrastructures as well as how these influence lives differently. I focused
mostly on questioning generational (dis-) advantages, economic inequalities
and, in part as a result, resulting digital (knowledge-) gaps.
I started using data literacy as a tool for digital emancipation and
educated decision-making. By designing creative learning materials I was
able to reach different target audiences with varying digital needs and
often disadvantaged backgrounds
<https://www.data-empowerment.nl/index.php/2021/04/10/dataliteracy4newcomers/>
.
That's how I came to see information and education as ultimate necessities
for active, societal participation and empowerment.
*So now I’m here.. Doing what? *
My role is to nurture all aspects that strengthen and encourage your
co-creation to Wikibase. I will support the flow of information between you
and the product development team by being present in user groups, social
media channels and other forms of online and offline events.
Also, I’m looking forward to learning more about your projects and
expanding the variety of ways to use Wikibase and interconnect open
knowledge. That’s why I’m excited to present Wikibase at upcoming events,
meeting other enthusiasts and getting to know you, the community, better.
Overall I strive to create environments that enable dialogue in a
constructive and non-violent manner.
How about you come to the next user meeting on the 27th and say Hello?
I’d be happy to meet you all very soon.
Also, if you have a wish, idea or you just want to say Hi - feel free to
send me an e-mail.

Hello,
As you may recall, Wikibase.Cloud launched in April as a closed beta for
WBStack users. Since then, we’ve been working on migrating existing WBStack
users to the new platform. We also created an application form (or waiting
list) to invite more users once the migration of WBStack users was
completed. (You can apply by filling out this form
<https://lime.wikimedia.de/index.php/717538>)
We’re excited to announce that we will begin onboarding new users to the
Wikibase.Cloud closed beta.
Review criteria and timeline
We'll consider each application on its merits, but we'll give greater
consideration to projects aligned with our movement
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Strategy> and Linked Open Data
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LinkedOpenData/Strategy2021> strategies.
Users will receive an invitation code with a link to go through the signup
flow. From there you can set up your account with a limit of 6 wikis. We
thank you for your patience in the meantime as we slowly invite users onto
the platform.
-
Invitations are being sent regularly from now on as we have capacity
-
Existing people on the waiting list will have received invitations to
join the Wikibase.cloud closed beta by the end of September
Based on the evaluation of the platform, we’ll keep sending out invites to
those who submit an application before we open it up completely. Please
note that we may revise this timeline during the course of the year.
Elasticsearch will be temporarily disabled for new users
We continue to face issues with Elasticsearch and have decided to
temporarily disable the feature for all newly created Wikibases. As a
consequence, search capabilities will be limited.
For instance, when adding a statement, one can only find an item or
property by referring to it by its Q-ID or P-ID, or by typing the exact
correct name, e.g., "Patrick Swayze" (not "patrick swayze" or "patr"). We
hope to have figured out a solution by the end of September, after which we
will communicate a rough timeline for implementation.
Please don’t hesitate to reach us on our contact page
<https://wikiba.se/contact/> if you have any questions or feedback.
We look forward to welcoming you to Wikibase.Cloud!
Cheers,

I have recently defined my first ShEx in my Wikibase.cloud instance, see
https://dreams.wikibase.cloud/wiki/EntitySchema:E1
I am wondering if I can use that for something. I haven't used Cradle
before and I tried to get it to work in the Wikibase instance with
https://dreams.wikibase.cloud/tools/cradle/?#/shex/E1
I was expecting that a bit more options than labels, aliases and
descriptions would show up based on the ShEx, but there is nothing.
I have also tried to validate items with the ShEx. Over at Wikidata, I
get a link with "check entities against this Schema", but in the
Wikibase.cloud instance I see no such link.
Using shex-simple.toolforge.org with
https://shex-simple.toolforge.org/wikidata/packages/shex-webapp/doc/shex-si…
Here I get "Content Security Policy" issues.
I am wondering whether there is anyone who has an example of ShEx
working on a wikibase.cloud instance or can point to some documentation
on wikibase.cloud-based ShEx? Or can point to errors that I make?

Hello everyone!
I’m Evelien[1], the new product manager for Wikibase.cloud (for which we
very recently released the private beta, hurray!). I joined the Wikimedia
Deutschland team to focus on Wikibase as a service, to make it easier than
ever before to create, connect, and grow our collaborative linked knowledge
base.
Specifically I'll be focusing on understanding what Wikibase users need,
finding what adds real value for you, and turning this into a beautiful
roadmap so that I, together with the team, can improve Wikibase.cloud for
you and we all can fulfil our vision in the long run.
For those who haven’t yet had the chance to catch up on the ongoing
developments around Wikibase.cloud, I highly recommend signing up to our
mailing list[2] or keep an eye out on our project page[3].
I just wanted to say hi, I’m very excited to be here and I hope to get a
chance to connect more and more with you in the coming months. You’re very
welcome to reach out to me at evelien.zandbergen(a)wikimedia.de to say hi
back, or with any feedback or questions you may have concerning the topic
of Wikibase.cloud.
Cheers,
Evelien
