Dear Doc and All,
The Texas fires are just heartbreaking/devastating, and I see online that there is one in Ruttersville, about 10 miles from Round Top. I hope all of you in Texas--and all your family and friends and homes--are safe and the weather conditions turn for the better soon. You are on my mind and in my heart. Please send word when you have the chance to let us know how you are.
With much love to you all, Maggie

Hey, thanks, Maggie. Our farm is about a mile from Rutersville. We rushed back here from South Texas (at the Keilers Ranch) to find that the fire fighters had stopped the fire before it had a chance to come our way. It did burn up a lot of land west of us, including the old Citzler homestead where Marilyn Wagner was born. It is very scary here. They cannot control the fire in Bastrop. It has been burning now since Sunday morning. And getting worse. We can see the mountains of smoke from out house, 40 miles away. About every hour another fire pops up somewhere. I spent the day watering the dying grass all around the house. Folks here (including us) are packing crates and bags for evacuation in the event the Bastrop fire turns this way or something comes from the east. Everyone is a bit unsettled, nervous. We need rain, badly, and right now.
Rick Perry will likely blame Obama for the fires, the drought, and for distracting him from his political evangelism.
We are fine. Sky-watching.

Doc, that is so scary. I gather from talking to my sister that one of the big problems is a shortage of firefighters given the number of fires. I trust people are flying in from all over to work, and in the meantime I'm glad to hear your local firefighters stopped the blaze. I'm also glad to hear you're getting your things packed just in case. Things happen so fast and you need to be ready to go if it comes to that. Be safe and keep us posted.
Much love to you and Joanne, Maggie

Thanks for the update Doc and thanks for the note Maggie -- and Doc, sound the alarm if volunteers are needed -- I will hop in the car at a moment's notice and I'm sure others will too... to save your house, Round Top, Winedale, with whatever we can...
There's a video on youtube of the Bastrop State Park fire, the wind blew it through at about the pace of a person running... a moving wall of fire, about two feet high.... fortunately the old CCC buildings have survived so far.

Would that any of the 35 gallons of water I've sponged out of my basement in the past 10 days had fallen in Texas instead! Hoping for the best.
Matt
I was in Ohio last week where it rained inches - so wonderful to just stand outside. I spent 5 days with people who thought I would be thrilled to have another Texas president...the evils of unions for policemen, teachers and Firemen! God help us!
Meanwhile flying back into Waco yesterday the pilot says 'if you'll look out the windows on the right you'll see a rather large brush fire.' It was only another of the small fires we've had...nothing to compare to what is going on in South Texas. Jayne, your words are profound. My prayers are with you all. Please let us know if there is anything we can do... Much Love, Joy

Perry will definitely refuse federal aid. It goes against his presidential platform (assuming that he can even understand his own presidential positioning). Here in North Texas, we are having similarly scary fires but not nearly as close to major metro areas. With no rain in the forecast for another week, we likely continue to face dangers across the state. Pray for no wind so that the firefighters can get some control. Keep safe Doc..

Dearest Doc, Maggie, All,
I was just on the phone talking to my friend John Davidson in Austin about how far the fires had spread, and he didn¹t know they¹d gotten as far as Fayette County. This is terrible, and would be unbelievable if the whole country didn¹t seems to be going off its rocker in too many ways. Thank goodness you all are packing. I will do my own version of praying that the rain comes, that you don¹t have to evacuate. We are getting more than our share of rain in the Adirondacks. How I wish it could be sent your way.
Much love, to you and JoAnn, and to everyone. Please stay safe. Alice

Thank you, dearest Maggie. I imagine this fire has hit close to home for most of us here in Texas. My brother's Renaissance festival--Sherwood Forest Faire--has narrowly escaped the fire, but for now it's been spared. My son, Zane, works and lives out there and has been evacuated from his home.
But we have friends who have lost everything--their pets, their homes and belongings--all but their lives. But that's the better part--except for a couple of tragedies in far east Texas, the people have all survived.
Love to Doc and all of you. I think of you all daily.

Dear Doc and All,****
The Texas fires are just heartbreaking/devastating, and I see online that there is one in Ruttersville, about 10 miles from Round Top. I hope all of you in Texas--and all your family and friends and homes--are safe and the weather conditions turn for the better soon. You are on my mind and in my heart. Please send word when you have the chance to let us know how you are. ****

Oh, Susan, I am so sorry for your son, your friends. And so glad for your brother, hoping the news holds.
Love, Alice
