hi,
it is now possible to run FastCGI programs in languages other than PHP (for
example, Perl or Python) on hemlock. to do this, simply create a standard
FastCGI application, and name it whatever.fcgi. the program does not need to
be inside cgi-bin.
for an example, see /home/river/public_html/test.fcgi and
<http://toolserver.org/~river/test.fcgi?foo>.
converting your programs to FastCGI will make them faster, and also reduce the
load on hemlock.

hi,
at 2:00 AM UTC on August 7th (tomorrow), the stable server caching proxy,
cache.stable.toolserver.org, will be shut down for emergency maintenance.
expected downtime is less than 5 minutes, during which the cache will be
unavailable. after the maintenance, the existing cache will be emptied.
the normal web server won't be affected by this maintenance.

no, it is identical to the way existing .php files work, which uses AddHandler
anyway.

so a while ago i tested FastCGI PHP instead of PHP CGI. unfortunately it had a
few problems, particularly with long-running scripts.
it's now possible to enable this selectively for particular files/directories.
read <https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/Switchboard> to find out how.
please do this if you can, as it should help significantly with load on
hemlock.

hi,
some changes have been made to how SVN works. you can read about them here:
<https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/New-style_Subversion_repositories>
at the moment, there are no plans to retire the old-style repositories, so you
can continue to use those if you like. all new accounts will have only
new-style repositories.

hi,
PHP on hemlock has been changed to use switchboard (a FastCGI PHP wrapper)
instead of CGI php. unless any major problems are uncovered, this change will
be permanent.
if you notice anything strange about PHP since the change, please let me know.

this mail only applies to people with projects on the stable server.
hi,
the new stable server is now ready. all accounts and projects have been added
on the new server, and web hosting is enabled for projects which need it.
home directories have not been copied. to migrate your project, copy any files
you need from old stable (stable.ts.wikimedia.org) to new stable
(stable.toolserver.org), then start your tools as normal (if appropriate).
once you have migrated, ask me to add an HTTP redirect from the old URL to the
new URL.
there is no deadline for migration, but i would like to shut down old stable
within two months.

hello,
the new login server (nightshade.toolserver.org) is now ready for use. this
server is for everything except web serving. all your bots, tools, etc. must
now be run here.
the login alias 'login.toolserver.org' will be updated shortly. this might
cause host keys warnings from your SSH client. the fingerprints of the new
server are:
RSA: 81:64:c8:f8:29:d1:ed:d7:b5:96:7a:5c:fa:d3:f5:61
DSA: e2:4a:07:58:36:ec:9c:0a:73:b4:f8:49:8f:ff:1a:d0
/home is shared between both servers, so there is no need to copy any files
over. http://toolserver.org/ URLs still point to hemlock.
if you find any problems with the new server, please file a bug at
<https://jira.toolserver.org> in the Toolserver project.
after 1 week from today (June 19), we will start killing all tools which run on
hemlock.
