Hi,
At about 22:30 UTC last night (Tuesday) one of our power circuits went
down for about 15 minutes. This affected one node of the HA cluster
which was hosting the following services:
Sun Grid Engine master server
tsbot IRC bot
DNS recursor
MySQL server for sql-toolserver
MySQL replication support infrastructure
LDAP server
All services failed over to the other node and were online again within
22 seconds. However, MySQL did not respond well to losing its
replication connection and had to be restarted manually, causing about
30 minutes replication lag.

Hi folks,
Just a reminder: although the Toolserver is hosted by Wikimedia
Deutschland, not all our admins (i.e., me) are fluent in German. You
will therefore get a faster response to your request when you write in
English.

Hello all,
I need to reboot nightshade, because of a kernel-update. The reboot will take
place tomorrow (Monday) at 20 o'clock UTC. The downtime will be between 5 and
15 minutes (5 minutes if nothing goes wrong).
You can track the issue at [[MNT-675]] and if you are login on nightshade, you
will get several notifies before the reboot too.
Sincerly,
DaB.

Hello all,
I was notified in IRC today, that the english wikipedia (enwp for short) is
going to change their toolserver-ip-blocking-policy. Some bots were editing
without login (I guess most time accidentally) in the past and enwp-admins
have had trouble with that; anonymous bot-editing is and were against our
toolserver-rules too.
So they plan to softblock (that means: editing without login is not possible)
our IPs in 2 weeks from now.
So if you run a bot, please make sure that you login to edit and test your bot
that it works with a softblocked ip. You may also test other tools, that edit
the english wikipedia.
Please notice also, that it is not allowed to run a bot on the web-servers.
The discussion of the policy-changing can be found at [1].
Sincerly,
DaB.

Hi,
We are (again) evaluating FreeBSD as a login server environment. There
is now a test server, zedler.toolserver.org, which you could test your
tools on if you like. (If you need configuration changes or software
installed, ask me on IRC; don't use JIRA for this, since it's not
official.)
At this time there are no plans to change the OS(es) on the login
servers, we're only evaluating options.

Hi,
On Tuesday morning UTC we will restart all MySQL servers which contain
replicated database to change a configuration setting. This will cause
around 15 minutes downtime per server. We will not restart the fast and
non-fast server for the same cluster at the same time, so all replicated
database will continue to be available during the maintenance.

Hi,
We are changing how account renewals work from now on. Instead of
sending mail to have your account renewed manually, all users will be
able to renew their own account by running "acctrenew" on a Solaris
login server (e.g. willow).
You will receive email notifications 28 days, 7 days and 1 day before
your account expires. This mail will tell you how to renew your account
(i.e., run acctrenew). There will be no notifications via the mailing
list, so you need to make sure your Toolserver email address is
up-to-date.
You cannot run acctrenew until 28 days before your account expiry. It
will extend your account for six months from the day you run it (not six
months from your current expiry).
This system should be easier for everyone, since users can renew their
accounts immediately, and admins don't have to do anything.
If you allow your account to expire, you will not be able to renew it
yourself. That still requires sending mail to ts-admins@.

Hi,
If you use CGI::Carp with fatalsToBrowser in your Perl CGI tools, please
remember that by default, the error message will instruct users to
contact ts-admins if your tool breaks. You need to change the error,
like this:
use CGI::Carp qw(fatalsToBrowser set_message);
set_message("Please mail jsmith(a)toolserver.org about this problem.");
Otherwise, ts-admins receives complaints about broken tools which we
don't care about and cannot fix.
