I just realized that for some reasons - at least in Polish Wikipedia we
have really low number of female users participating in discussions:
Statics are like that:
Cycle 3: 0 of 19 (at the moment)
Cycle 2: 1 of 26
Cycle 1: 2 of 35
So, there are: 3 woman out of 80 participants - which is just 3,75% of
participants, although we have around 23% of active users who declared to
be females in Polish Wikipedia.
I know about the phenomenon that in general female users avoid aggressive
meta-discussions, but actually - the strategy on-line discussions weren't
very aggressive in Polish Wikipedia. In the same time there were some other
more aggressive discussions, which were attended by female user in higher
number than 3.75%. I am curious how it looks like in other on-line strategy
discussions?

Hi all!
*Summary: The summary of the Cycle 2 discussions is now online.*
A summary of the Cycle 2 discussions has been posted on Meta-Wiki.[1]
Please review the summaries, they’re really informative![2] In the
meantime, I wanted to highlight some of the things you said during this
most recent cycle:
Australian Community participants said we can only create a trusted source
of knowledge if we are a good community. They also discussed problems
dealing with new users, and more appropriate help in starting editing.[3]
Some participants in the Wikimedia Chile Strategy meetup believed that
without healthy and inclusive communities, content will become “impossible
and irrelevant”.[4] Marco Correa Pérez, Wikimedia Chile President, and the
language liaison for the Spanish community, also spoke about this event
during our monthly metrics and activities meeting earlier today.[5]
Members of the Wikimedians of Korea User Group talked about improving human
translation capabilities, the environment for multimedia uploading,
understanding cultural diversity, and mobile editing.[6]
On the French Wikipedia discussion participants think we should involve
experts to improve the verifiability of content, stop “confronting” humans
against machines. They believe that if we want Wikimedia to be a force in
the broader knowledge ecosystem, Wikimedia must partner with institutional
actors to build legitimacy.[7]
We will be starting Cycle 3 in the next few days. In addition to the
community and organized group discussions, we have hosted conversations
with more than 150 experts and partners or potential partners. We have also
been conducting research in both countries where Wikimedia is well known,
and those regions where we are not.
This final cycle is dedicated to considering the findings from these
conversations with experts and independent research. We want to consider
the challenges and opportunities that have been identified, and how we may
want to evolve in response to changes in the world around us.
These conversations, along the results from cycles 1 and 2, will be used by
the drafting group to write the draft strategic direction, which will be
available for your review in August.
*On a related note*
We are in the middle of a holiday week in the United States, and as a
result some Foundation staff are enjoying time off with family and friends.
Responses may be a bit delayed as a result. I wish everyone enjoying
holidays have a safe, restful, and joyful time away!

*Summary: Cycle 2 has concluded, and we are sharing a revised plan for
Cycle 3 based on your feedback.*
Thank you to everyone that participated in Cycle 2![1] A quick overview of
participation:
- More than 50 Wikimedia groups, including:
-- Art+Feminism User Group
-- WikiDonne's User Group
-- Wikimedia Ghana User Group
-- Wikimedia Poland
- More than 1,000 individual participants
- Nearly 2,300 statements
In addition to the weekly summaries already available on Meta-Wiki,[2] we
will also be posting a final report in the coming weeks.
Over the past few weeks I’ve heard from many of you with feedback,
concerns, and excitement regarding the movement strategy. Thank you, truly,
to everyone that has reached out to share your thoughts. They have been so
helpful in understanding your perspectives and needs.
Some things I’ve heard:
- Curiosity around how the findings from the different tracks will come
together
- Request from affiliates for more time to engage more deeply in these
topics
- Passionate and divergent ideas from non-editors who support our vision
- A desire to get as many endorsements from around the movement on the
strategic direction as possible
I asked the strategy team for help in responding to this feedback, so we
could improve the process based on what you were telling us. After
discussions with the team and community advisors, we have decided to move
to a more flexible schedule, and change the timeline. This will provide
more time for discussions in your own communities. We also hope you will
use the time to deeply consider the research emerging from the New Voices
track,[3] and incorporate it into the way you are thinking about our future.
Here is the new proposed timeline:
- July: Complete Cycle 3. Integrate insights from New Voices. Draft the
strategic direction.
- August: Share the strategic direction. Wikimania! Finalize the direction.
- September: Sign on! Confirm support from around the movement.
As July approaches, we will share more information about opportunities to
participate in drafting the strategic direction[4] and engage with New
Voices content.[3]
Thank you for your patience as we worked through these improvements, and
again, thank you for the feedback!
*On a related note*
As you have hopefully noticed, Wikimania is a part of the strategy process
and it is coming up soon! (I’m so excited!) A draft program schedule has
been posted[5]. The schedule includes five keynote sessions from great
speakers such as Esra'a Al Shafei [6] and Evan Prodromou,[7] more than 100
community-submitted talks, and two days of hackathon and pre-conference
activities. Early bird pricing for registration ends on July 10 and the
deadline for booking accommodations in the hotel is June 30, so if you have
not done so already - please register today![8]

We have had a great deal of activity this past week from organized groups.
Many have told us that the timelines are too short for them to engage as
deeply as they would like. In addition, most of the research from the New
Voices track has just been completed. To better accommodate the community
and organized groups, and create the opportunity to deeply consider the New
Voices research, we will be extending the schedule.
This will ensure that everyone has the time to review and digest the key
insights from the research and over 150 expert interviews, as well as more
effectively plan their conversations.
