Subject: [Wikimedia-l] [Movement Strategy] Your perspectives are needed to
scope our future.
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear fellow Wikimedians,
In 2017, we set ourselves an ambitious goal of becoming the essential
infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and now we need a
path for how we get there. In the spirit of what got us started – we
will work together to find our path.
We now have a fundamental tool in place to help us get there: scoping
documents have been finalized and are now live on Meta[1]. These will
help us dive deeper into our movement’s structures than ever before
and discover exciting opportunities for our future.
The scoping documents have been created by the nine working groups of
the Movement Strategy Process. I would like to thank them
wholeheartedly for their enormous effort and dedication to making this
first step happen.[2]
These documents are a focused reflection of the discussions about our
future that have been happening for some time. The working groups have
captured these and boiled them down into a set of questions that will
guide their work going forward. These are the essential questions of
our movement. Now, we have the chance – and the mandate – to answer
them together.
Identifying how we need to adapt our structures and maximizing our
movement’s potential lie at the heart of these questions. We encourage
you to read the scoping documents about the topics you care about and
bring your ideas for possible solutions in to the the global
conversation about our future. The documents have been translated into
eight languages already, and we are working on translating more of our
meta content into more languages over the next couple of weeks.
I would also like to introduce a new addition to the core team, our
Community Relations Specialist Kelsi Stine-Rowe. Kelsi will be working
with members of Wikimedia communities and organized groups to
facilitate community conversations on the scoping documents.
Join in! Here’s how can you get involved:
* Sign up as a Strategy Liaison for your organized group and ensure
that your group’s perspectives are heard.[3]
* Take part in our community conversations happening until mid-April
on Meta, via survey, and within several communities.[4]
Kelsi will also be in touch later today with more concrete information
about joining the community conversations.
We look forward to hearing your voices and your perspectives.
Best wishes,
Nicole

Subject: Looking for Liaisons for the Movement Strategy Process
To: <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear fellow Wikimedians,
We are happy to announce our plans to engage Wikimedia communities in the
strategic and structural reform discussions of our global movement. The
Movement Strategy Process requires input and participation from all of our
communities and we are looking for Liaisons for the Movement Strategy
Process to engage with some language communities and facilitate their
participation in global strategic discussions. Liaisons will ensure that
the voices and perspectives of these communities are heard and considered
in the Movement Strategy Process and that members of these communities
actively engage and participate in the discussions in their own language.
Based on criteria of reach of the language, projects, as well as existing
editor base, the Core Team has identified the following language
communities for further engagement and will be hiring a Strategy Liaisons
for each:[1]: Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese,
Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
The Liaisons are expected to: engage with the communities in their native
language; coordinate and facilitate discussions; support healthy
communication; provide details and context when needed, and monitor
different communication channels of the communities to surface ideas
related to the Strategy Process. Liaisons will be expected to identify
opportunities where the ongoing Movement Strategy Process discussions can
benefit and solicit ideas from interested community members. Liaisons will
also be expected to summarize the most important discussion points,
coordinate translations of these summaries to share them with Liaisons
Coordinator, Working Groups and wider global community.
Ideal candidates will have a good connection with the local communities,
strong communication skills, fluency in English and one of the nine
identified community languages as well as organizational and collaborative
skills.
The Liaisons positions will be part time (up to 20 h/week) and will be in
place from February to December 2019. If you are interested in the role or
would like to have more information, you can find the full description of
the role on respective application page
<https://boards.greenhouse.io/wikimedia/jobs/1478679?gh_src=2a6a8b121> [2].
Please note that we are also recruiting for a full-time Liaisons
Coordinator to ensure engagement of the communities in the Movemement
Strategy Process and manage the work of the Strategy Liaisons. You can
find the full description of this role on respective application page
<https://boards.greenhouse.io/wikimedia/jobs/1460548?gh_src=abf396081> [3].
We look forward to collaborating with many of you in the upcoming year and
working with the Strategy Liaisons to engage our communities in the
Movement Strategy Process. If you have any questions or specifications
regarding the role, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Project
Manager Jodi McMurray ( jmcmurray{{at}}wikimedia.org ).
With all the best wishes,
Kaarel and the Core Team

Dear all,
I am writing you in my capacity as the strategy track lead for
organized groups. In the previous weeks and months I have directly
reached out to the affiliates and other groups in our movement. To
make sure that everyone has the information they need for the upcoming
endorsement, I am now extending my outreach effort to this list.
Please feel free to share this information with your peers and
communities.
== Endorse the strategic direction on October 26 ==
On October 26, all constituents of the Wikimedia movement (affiliates,
groups, WMF and individual contributors) are invited to express their
support and commitment to the new strategic direction[1]. By adding
their signature to the endorsement page on Meta, everyone declares
their intent to work together towards this future. And although we
would like to use this day to create a sense of community spirit
around the direction, there will be a way to endorse the direction
after the 26.
Signatories commit to participating in the next phase of this
discussion in good faith and to define, by Wikimania 2018, how to come
to an agreement, on roles, responsibilities, and organizational
strategies that enable us to implement that future.
They pledge to consider the needs of our movement above their own, and
to find the structures, processes, and resources for our movement that
enable us to best move towards our common direction.
== What endorsement does not mean ==
Endorsing the strategic direction does not mean that the signing
groups or individuals endorse all the steps that follow and the
decisions that are being made in phase 2. How organizations and
individuals use the outcomes of these conversations is up to them.
Some may use it to inform programmatic or organizational strategy.
Others may see it as a way to connect with the broader movement and
invite others to contribute to Wikimedia. Some may not use it at all –
and that’s okay!
== How to endorse ==
The endorsement page will be published under
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction/…
on October 26. Please sign this page with your username (make sure to
be logged in) in the section for organized groups.
For organized groups:
* name of your group (incl. link to meta page/website); country and/or
project that your group is most active in; optionally, you can add a
sentence of support. --~~~~ (signature)
For individual contributors:
* project that you are most active in; country or region that you are
most active in; optionally, you can add a sentence of support. --~~~~
(signature)
You are endorsing the original English version of the strategic
direction and the “What comes next” paragraph beneath. Available
translations are used as a support to understand the context and
meanings.
Aside from signing the meta page, you are welcome to use
#wikimedia2030 on social media to celebrate and share your support
with the world.
Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback.
Thank you!

Hi all,
I’m delighted to share that a final version of the Wikimedia movement's new
strategic direction has been posted on Meta-Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/?curid=10422143
The drafting group[1] bravely spent several weeks reading, considering, and
(when possible) responding to the comments posted about the previous
drafts. Attempting to capture and synthesize the aspirations and opinions
of a global movement based on hundreds of offline and online conversations
is no easy task. Please join me in thanking them not only for taking on
this formidable process, but for helping develop something I believe we can
all be proud of.
I am optimistic that this strategic direction provides every individual and
entity within the Wikimedia movement something to be excited about.
Beginning on October 26, we will be asking for individual contributors and
organized groups to endorse this new strategic direction for our movement.
I encourage you to spend the intervening days discussing this direction and
determining if you and/or your group will be endorsing it. You will find
more information about the endorsement day and the process on the
direction’s meta page next week.
The endorsement concludes phase 1 of the process, and we are currently
drafting the next steps of the process. The main goal of phase 2 will be to
answer the question "How do we implement the strategic direction", which
means identifying the resources needed for execution, and the activities it
involves. A first rough overview of this phase is being developed on Meta.
Take a look! [2]
On a different note, we have completed the move into our new office space
at One Montgomery Tower![3] Once again, thank you to everyone on staff who
was involved in making the move so seamless, and to all of you for your
patience over the past couple of weeks. Later this month, once we are more
settled in, we will be sharing photos and information about our new space
on the Wikimedia Blog.
Stay tuned!
መልካም ቀን። (Amharic translation: “Have a nice day”),

Hi all,
Since my update last month, we have been collecting, processing, and
including your most recent input into the lastest version of the movement
strategic direction. This version is available on Meta-Wiki.[1]
We're so close! The direction will be finalized tomorrow, October 1.
Starting tomorrow, we will begin to invite individuals and groups to
endorse our movement's strategic direction. I want to share my greatest
thanks and appreciation for the work and contributions so many of you have
made throughout this first phase (Phase 1) of developing a shared strategic
direction.
In the coming weeks we will be preparing for Phase 2, which will involve
developing specific plans for how we achieve the direction we have built
together. I do not have many more details to share right now, but will of
course offer an update as they become available.
*Strategic direction*. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the
draft introduced at Wikimania. The version on Meta-Wiki is based on the
feedback you offered.
*Endorsements*. Once the strategic direction closes tomorrow,
organizations, groups, and individuals within the movement will be invited
to endorse the direction, in a show of support for the future we are
building together. We'll be sending an update next week on the process and
timeline.
*Concluding Phase 1*. Please join me in offering thanks to the volunteers,
staff, and contractors who came together to make this possible! As we
transition into Phase 2, some of these roles will be concluded and new ones
created in their place. We'll keep you updated.
*Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2017*. I was fortunate to join Wikimedians from
Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) last weekend at the sixth annual Wikimedia
CEE Meeting[2] in Warsaw, Poland. Nicole Ebber and Kaarel Vaidla led a
series of discussions on the direction, including what it means for CEE.[3]
Thank you our hosts, Wikimedia Polska, and to all of the attendees for such
a wonderful event!
*In other news.* I've heard from many people how much you appreciate these
updates as a means of keeping track about what is going on. I'm talking to
the Communications department about keeping them going once the strategic
planning process concludes, with a focus on more general updates. Keep the
feedback coming.
Since my last update, our planet has reminded us of its incredible and
often unforgiving strength. My thoughts, and those of many within the
Wikimedia Foundation, are with our Wikimedia family which have been
affected by the natural disasters of recent weeks. We have been in touch
with our affiliates in the areas impacted, and will offer any support we
can.
Finally, as our CFO Jaime mentioned last week,[3] the Foundation is in the
process of moving into our new office, in One Montgomery Tower. We invite
you to visit its new page on Meta-Wiki.[4]
We are at the halfway mark of this movement strategy process, and I am
incredibly proud of the work we have done together on the strategy. Thank
you, again, to everyone for your contributions to this process. We have
more work ahead but should be proud of what we have achieved already.

Hi all!
As I write this, I feel almost like a student returning to school. With
Wikimania behind us and autumnal weather starting outside it feels like the
start of a new year - and a return to serious things after the last days of
summer sunshine, storms, and socializing at Wikimedia in Montreal. But I
was always the sort of kid who loved the return of the school season as
much as I regretted the end of summer holidays: it meant it was time to
return to learning, exploring, and doing substantive things.
And we have many substantive things to do! Phase I of the strategy is
drawing to a close, and Phase II will start in November. A reminder that
Phase I was about collectively developing a shared strategic direction, and
Phase II will be about developing plans for how we make the direction a
reality. We’re nearly halfway there!
*Draft strategic direction*. Throughout the past few weeks community
members have been reviewing the draft strategic movement direction[1] which
was presented shortly before Wikimania. Thank you to everyone who has
already shared feedback. For those who haven’t yet, I encourage you to join
the discussion on the talk page. Because of the high volume of feedback
collected at Wikimania, we are extending the timeline to ensure the draft
incorporates the feedback appropriately. We expect to publish draft 2
sometime in early to mid September. Then we will have a 2-week period for
community review. If all goes according to plan, the final draft will post
by the end of September.
*Wikimania movement strategy space*. At Wikimania in Montreal, we welcomed
the community to learn more about the strategy process and discuss the
draft direction in the movement strategy space. We held three feedback
sessions, five facilitated sessions, and two presentation-oriented sessions
over four days. They focused on sharing insights from New Voices (experts,
attitudes and usage research in high awareness regions, research in low
awareness regions, and key global trends), insights from discussions for
organized groups and individual contributors, and exploring considerations
for Phase II (roles, responsibilities, and resources). The feedback from
those sessions has been collected in a report available on Meta.[2]
*Strategy keynote and session materials*. At Wikimania, our Wikimedia
Foundation Board Chair, Christophe Henner, and I discussed the strategic
direction during the opening keynote [3], and held a panel discussion with
fellow community members Ivan Martinez, Mervat Salman, Magnus Manske, and
Anasuya Sengupta, where they shared their perspectives on the strategic
direction. I also joined the heads of Creative Commons (Ryan Merkley) and
the Mozilla Foundation (Mark Surman) for a discussion about “The Big Open”
and how open culture organizations can join forces to strengthen our
movement. In other sessions and events, the strategy team presented insight
from this process. Many of those session presentations and notes are posted
on Meta, and more materials will be published in the coming days.[4]
I’ll be sure to send an update as soon as the new draft direction is ready,
but for those who are watching as we go, keep an eye on Meta - we’ll be
making changes there over the next few days as we continue to integrate
your feedback. In the meantime, thank you for your insights and
participation!

Hi everyone,
TL;DR A draft of the Wikimedia movement’s strategic direction[1] is on
Meta. Everyone is invited to read and discuss on the talk page!
At the beginning of this year, the Wikimedia movement began a remarkable
global discussion to consider our collective future, under the name
Wikimedia 2030. Our aim has been to work together to define a common
strategic direction that will unite and inspire people across our movement.
This direction is the foundation on which we strengthen our work, challenge
our assumptions, experiment with the future, build clear plans, and set
priorities around resources and allocation.[2]
The process has been alternately challenging, delightful, messy, and
fascinating. More than 80 Wikimedia groups and communities have
participated in discussions all over the world.[3] Conversations were held
across languages on-wiki, in person (including a 17-hour strategy track at
the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin), virtually, and through private
surveys. We complemented our discussions with research on readers around
the world[4] and conversations with more than 150 experts.[4] We looked at
future trends that will affect our mission on our way to 2030.[5]
In July, a drafting group[6] took on the enormous task of synthesizing this
information into a draft strategic direction. This group, made up of of a
diverse group of community volunteers and representatives from the
Wikimedia 2030 strategy team,[7] aimed to represent the feedback from
participants across the movement who contributed to Wikimedia 2030 --
including individual volunteers, Wikimedia organizations, readers,
partners, and donors.[8] Their goal has been to produce an early version of
the strategic direction that the broader movement can review and discuss.
I am delighted to share our first draft of our movement-wide strategic
direction[9]. Please read, share, and discuss on Talk pages or in upcoming
conversations with discussion coordinators on your local wikis. Based on
your feedback, the drafting group will continue to refine and finalize this
direction through August. The more we all can collaborate on strengthening
this draft, the stronger our future will be.
Thank you to every single person and group that has engaged in this
process. While we’re not done yet, I want to express my personal gratitude
and congratulations to everyone for your engagement, honesty, and
contributions. It has been a remarkable journey.
(For those of you attending Wikimania, the conference will be an additional
opportunity to for discussion, feedback, and exploration around the
findings from the Wikimedia 2030 process. We're hosting a strategy track
that will offer the opportunity to learn more about the findings from the
consultations and research, and offer feedback on the direction. You can
find more information about this track here.
Yours,
Katherine

This draft is currently being translated.
[2] The strategic direction is not meant to be a strategic plan. Plans are
3-5 years, executable and measurable, specific to organizational
capacity/resources, and should give us points to assess progress/viability.
The direction should be broad, enduring, and ambitious, and clear enough to
provide guidance on overarching goals against which a plan with those
specifics can be built. The strategic direction is on a 12-year timeline
because it allows people to focus on aspirational end goals rather than
what it means for their immediate roles and interests. We will talk more
about strategic plans in phase 2, starting in November 2017.

Hello folks,
A few of you know this already since they've already completed the
translation :) (Thank you!)
Yesterday the strategy team finished a first stable draft of the strategic
direction on Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction
This will be announced in the next couple of days and discussions will
start with your communities soon. More details on that will come later, but
in the meantime I wanted to send the text itself so that you could start
translating it.
In terms of priority, the text in the green box is the most important to
translate. After that, the rest of the page is ordered in decreasing
importance, so you can just start from the top.
I would also invite you to share your personal thoughts on the talk page.
It certainly feels like an accomplishment to have this draft after all the
work we have all put into this process, but the current text is still open
for improvement. It's not quite over yet :)
I'll be in transit tomorrow so if you encounter issues, please share them
in this list to seek support from others.
I'm looking forward to seeing some of you in Montréal this week.
