Update on Wikimedia movement strategy process (#18)

Hi all, *Summary: Some examples of topics in Cycle 2 discussions; some reflections after my first year.* Modifications to the five themes have been posted on Meta-Wiki, based on community feedback. These changes helped make the themes easier to understand and translate. [1] Once again, we appreciate everyone's input on how to help our global audience engage more effectively in the Cycle 2 discussions. The discussions continue to emerge in new places like Facebook and among more groups like Wiki in Education and WikiProject Medicine.[2] *Here are a few examples of what we are hearing in discussions:[3]* *"We need to establish a way to ensure that all the articles cited do indeed fairly reflect the scientific consensus as well as the relevant scientific controversies." Hebrew Wikipedia village pump[4] *"Become the most respected source of broad-based knowledge suited for the general public." Wikidata discussion[5] * "International, multilingual nature of Wikimedia project is an asset that may help to overcome current separatist tendencies in the world, by bringing knowledge to more people, so they can better understand others and the world." Polish Wikipedia[6] Have a reaction to some of those thoughts? Have opinions and ideas of your own that you want to contribute? Discussions will continue until June 12,[2] and you can also take the private survey.[7] *On a related note* Earlier today, the Wikimedia Foundation held its monthly public metrics and activities meeting, and I had a chance to reflect on my first year in this role.[8] I focused mainly on changes in the Wikimedia Foundation. The work of the community is much broader, and would have been hard to describe in ten minutes! I am incredibly proud of how far we have come and very excited about the opportunities before us. May 18: Update on Wikimedia movement strategy process (#17)

Hi all, *Summary: Cycle 2 discussions continue! Lisa Seitz-Gruwell joined the core team as coach. * Cycle 2 discussions are actively underway on Meta-Wiki,[1] on more than a dozen local wikis, on other channels such as WhatsApp and Telegram, and in offline locations around the world.[2] These discussions are focused on the 5 top themes: * Healthy, inclusive communities [3] * The augmented age [4] * A truly global movement [5] * The most respected source of knowledge [6] * Engaging in the knowledge ecosystem [7] We have begun posting the first insights from the conversations we are having with outside experts and partners. They are available on the strategy portal on Meta-Wiki so that people can discuss how these insights might impact the themes being discussed.[8] We’ve received very helpful feedback from members of the community on translating and framing these themes so they make more sense to more people. As such, we are working on some slight wording changes to help make each theme description easier to understand and translate across languages. Those changes will be on Meta-Wiki within the week.[1] Of course, you can find more information about each of these themes, their discussions, and how to participate on the movement strategy portal on Meta-Wiki.[2] The movement strategy process continues to grow and gain momentum! This is all thanks to your participation. To help with internal coordination of this growing process, I have asked our capable and talented Chief Advancement Officer, Lisa Seitz-Gruwell, to join the core team as a coach for the team and working groups. She’ll be helping make sure people have the information and support they need so they can focus on getting great work done. May 12: Update on Wikimedia movement strategy process (#16)

Hi all, *Summary: Cycle 2 discussions have started on Meta-Wiki and a wiki near you![1]* The core team and working groups have completed reviewing the more than 1800 thematic statements we received from the first discussion. They have identified 5 themes that were consistent across all the conversations - each with their own set of sub-themes.[1] To be clear, these are not the final themes! They are just an initial working draft of the core concepts. There are more conversations yet to come. Starting this week, you are invited to join the online and offline discussions taking place on these 5 themes. This round of discussions will take place between now and June 12th.[2] You can discuss as many as you like; we ask you to participate in the ones that are most (or least) important to you. For each theme, we are asking five questions. These questions are intended to help us understand the impact of these potential themes and the tradeoffs we will have to make. To succeed in any strategic venture, we must not only declare what we will do, but also what we will not! If you have research and other citable data related to your opinions, please include them! Finally, we ask that you participate in an honest and respectful manner. Each theme has a page on Meta-WIki with more information about the theme and how to participate in that theme's discussion. Here are the five major themes, and their brief descriptions: *== Healthy, inclusive communities == [3]* By 2030, the Wikimedia volunteer culture will be fun, rewarding, and inclusive for both existing contributors and newcomers. We will welcome new volunteers to our movement and mentor them to ensure that they have a great experience and continue to engage in the projects. People from every background will feel included in an ecosystem of unique groups and organizations that deepen connections with each other. As a result, our movement will grow both in size and in character, as our projects flourish from the healthy community we cultivate together. *== The augmented age == [4]* By 2030, the Wikimedia movement will collaborate with learning machines to help our volunteers be much more creative and productive. May 5: Update on Wikimedia movement strategy process (#15)

Hi all, *Summary: The report from cycle 1 discussion is online[1]. The start of cycle 2 is delayed until next week.* Thank you for your contributions! We have been hard at work reading, sorting, and summarizing more than 1,800 community member statements, from more than 100 community discussions from across five continents. Each of these statements was a response to the question: "What do we want to build or achieve together over the next 15 years?" You can find the full report on the major themes, and more details about them, in a summarized report on Meta-Wiki.[1] Some common themes emerged from these conversations: * Reliable, neutral, high-quality content * Community health & support * Internal & external collaboration * Improved and new features * Users, editors, & contributors * Outreach, awareness, & promotion * Innovation and adaptation * Funding, staffing, and other organizational needs * Support for emerging communities * Advancing Wikipedia in education * Movement values * Sustainability & growth Each of these themes is described in more detail within the body of the report,[1] and the full data spreadsheet from this analysis will be posted soon. The movement strategy team has been working to group these themes together, so that we have a smaller number of concepts to consider in the next cycle. Because this work is important, we want to make sure the grouping and analysis are comprehensive and thoughtful. In order to make sure we can get it right, we’re delaying the start of cycle 2 discussions until next week. As you probably know, the Turkish authorities blocked Wikipedia in Turkey this week.[2] We’ve been working around the clock to understand the circumstances and respond appropriately, including appealing in Turkish court. We’re grateful to everyone who has reached out to offer us your thoughts and perspective. Government limitations on free knowledge are just one of the critical issues that have come up during the movement strategy process. As we confront these challenges in real time, it has been a reminder for me how important our work is, and how it has very real implications for people around the globe. Again, thank you. Cycle 1 report available

Moin, Karen just completed marking the cycle 1 report <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Cycle_1/Re…> up for translation. I have been reading parts of it since receiving it yesterday and learnt a lot, especially in regard to completing the summary of sources already available on Meta. The related raw data is also due for Meta release by end of this week but I think there is merit in exploring the findings of the first cycle and, where helpful to you and your local communities, start translating the text even if linking the raw data sets might lead to small adjustments of the existing page.
