Actually, they seem to be pretty good about that. You seem to be able
to subscribe, etc. without using a web browser or having a google
account. Unless maybe they then autocreate an account for you?
I took some headers from a recent google group message and substituted
in placeholders for the parts that were not generic:

So for that group would would send a blank mail to
