In gerrit (at least the Wikimedia instance), git URLs are not the same
with the web ones - I know, it's confusing. You can find a project by
searching at
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/admin/projects/
Pywikibot is at
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/admin/projects/pywikibot/core
Perhaps the devs should configure the server to recognize a GET request for
the Git URLs and perform an HTTP redirect to the Gerrit project URL?
Feel free to log a bug, Jonathan. I have no idea how simple or
complicated that might be.
HTTPS was chosen presumably because it is ensuring both client and
server authentication in a portable (aka not dependent on a ssh
implementation that might be missing in certain OSes) and secure way.
I'm pretty sure one can configure gerrit to download through ssh as
well.
