Hello, everybody!
As reported previously [1], the OHIM (IP Observatory)[2] has picked up our request to commission a study on the benefits of public domain and open licenses. To get the process going we need to present a one-pager with our main ideas. This document has been worked out together with EDRi [3] and BEUC [4], as they will also request the same study in order to have more leverage. We have kept this intentionally broad at some points, as the OHIM needs to make a first step in specifying the exact form and methodology.
I am sharing this with you now and asking for feedback and comments until the middle of next week. Please bear in mind, that this is really just a first pitch and the form of the study will be agreed upon in the months to come.
Thank you! Dimi

Hi Dimi,
Stephen and I wrote a guest post for EFF about the importance of the public domain for Wikipedia last month: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2014/01/wikipedia-shows-value-vibrant-public-d...
You may want to reuse some of that discussion to expand on the section on the social value of the public domain and open licenses. I think that concrete examples would help make that section more persuasive.
Best, Yana

Hi Yana,
thanks for the pointer! Some examples of the social value are indeed very much needed.
I also realised that Babmi/Pinnochio have different legal status in the US and in Europe, I shall therefore replace them with Cindarella, to play it safe.

Correction: I meant Babmi and Winnie Pooh (not Pinnochhio).

Regarding the public domain issue, perhaps someone can create a document where--at the very least--we can add citations to important documents, to serve as a resource for when work on the text begins.

Hi,
If you haven't read Amanda Hess's piece at http://www.psmag.com/navigation/health-and-behavior/women-arent-welcome-inte..., it is well worth reading. In it, she makes a very compelling case that the EFF's position on privacy is problematic in terms of protecting potential abusers private information and in effect enabling abuse. There needs to be a really good exploration of the relationship between the EFF and the WMF in terms of advocacy going forward because of this issue. With a goal of the WMF to increase user participation, aligning with an organization that protects the privacy abusers may not be one of the best stategic prioritities.
Sincerely, Laura Hale

Yes, this is an important discussion regarding privacy. It is an ongoing topic of discussion in various portions of the wikimedian community. However, this proposed study being discussed is about copyright, which is quite a different subject.
