Hi Samito,
It's really great that you want to cover the FoP debate. I have put the
latest version of the press release on the meta site, where it is freely
accessible:
There have been real legal consequences as the result of photos of
buildings taken in public places. None of the cases, as far as I know,
have dealt with regular tourists uploading photos on social-media sites.
However, if you offer the photos to the public in a systematic manner or
commercially, legal action from the building's copyright holder is more
likely.
I would not view this as a part of the larger discussion on the proper
balance of power between the EU and the member countries. That issue
would fall quite far outside the scope of the Wikimedian effort in Brussels.
Best regards,
Karl

Hi, all, esp. to Stevie and Karl.
My name is Samito Jalbuena, a member of media in the Far East. I would
like to assess the FOP issue (and what Europe may hope to desire) in
my coverage. I shall do so from an Asian POV, an outsider or a
stranger. However, my opinion will only relate back to the agenda.
Control should be realized sooner if Europe becomes a state by
normalizing one law, thus FOP can be normatized across the board,
along with other issues. (The nation-state is outdated, or am I wrong?
Is the explosion of an infinity of laws that have no hope to be
enforced only another statement that this is lawlessness?) As for
the text or template, I will be most honored if I may be given
permission to read it. Thank you, Stevie and Karl.
And by the way, my coverage shall be in the subtext of an art review.
I have yet to ask your opinion on what kind of art should be illegal
in all of Europe. If a vacation picture with certain monuments is a
crime according to a few outdated nation-states, I need your inputs on
a work of art that will get the artist crucified on a much wider
scale. (He can rise again on the third day because of the power of
collectors, or we can use electricity.) In other words, if thousands
of Asians took pictures of the new LV art center in Paris while
knowing it was a crime is negligible because law is empty and
unenforced, then I have to ask what kind of picture will actually
ignite forces to action.
One artist has recently made a portrait of yours truly but I have told
him to wait for these important edits. Hope we can collaborate.
Sincerely yours,
Samito Jalbuena

Hi Karl,
Thanks for all of your work on this, I'm pleased I was able to
help. It
will be really interesting to see if this angle gets picked up in the
press.
If the story gets coverage anywhere it would be great to see any
links.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Hi all,
I have written a template for a press release on the Freedom of
Panorama
issue. The message is that the European
Parliament is now
noticing the
little known restrictions on sharing pictures of
buildings and
monuments
online. We welcome this and point out that people
in general
have no idea
that they are not permitted to share their
vacation pictures
online when
traveling in countries such as France, Italy and
Greece. (Thank
you Stevie
for your excellent edits!)
If you are interested in spreading the word in your country, or
if you
know someone who is, contact me and I will share
the template
with you.
What you have to do is translate the text. You are, of course,
free to
change it as you see fit.
As far as sending out the press release is concerned, I have
written a
brief how-to guide at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EU_policy/how-to/press_release
If you have little time but would like to participate, I'd be
happy to
compile a list of media outlets in your country
and send out the
translated
press release with you as point of reference for
journalists who
have
follow-up questions.
Hope to hear from you.
Best Regards,
Karl
