Hi Dimi,
That's great, thank you for your speedy response! I will put something together outlining the work that I have done (actually, Emily is working on a draft presentation that I can use for things like this - en even better example of the value of volunteers). I will also see if she's interested in co-presenting. It may well be that I come back to you all closer to Wikimania and ask for some other examples but beyond that, I have it in hand for now.
With thanks and regards,
Stevie
PS I hope you have a great weekend too!

Hi Stevie,
as far as I am concerned I love your example and actually have a few cases like this myself. Advocacy as yet another way to contribute to Wikimedia and help with our mission/vision. I'd be happy to support the submission in any way, just don't want to be the lead, as I feel like I'll have enough on my plate with the current two and actually love team-work :)
Cheers and try to enjoy the weekend! Dimi

Hi Dimi,
Thanks for your email. I'm sorry it's taken a while for me to respond, I've been away from the internet.
I would be happy to take a lead on this if we think a session is worthwhile. Given that the deadline for submissions is Monday, I sense that any kind of submission made now would be a pretty much a statement of intent / placeholder. If people are happy to help refine any session (if the proposal is accepted) I'm prepared to put in a submission.
I think one area that might be worth covering is the potential of the advocacy work to recruit volunteers who aren't involved in the Wikimedia world. For example, in the advocacy I've been doing with UK MEPs I've been very fortunate to have the support of a volunteer called Emily Sorensen. She, as far as I know, hasn't edited Wikipedia but wanted to learn more about this kind of work. She helped to collect contact details, find concrete examples of how change would benefit the projects (and others) and did a lot of the admin-type work that I just didn't have time for. My thinking is that there are lots of people who support and love Wikipedia but don't edit (and I was one of them before accepting this role!). That's a lot of untapped potential help - there's many ways to support Wikimedia projects that don't involve editing.
Could be a useful case study, and I'd love to hear from others who have had similar experiences.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Hi Stevie,
as far as talks are currently concerned, I've prepared two submissions. One is a presentation of what has happened on EU level in the past 12 months since Hong Kong [1] and the other a panel discussion about advocacy and Wikimedia.[2]
I like the idea of having a thirnd session focusing clearly on the FKAGEU. This way we can have the presentation focusing on the legislative aspecsts on the EU level, while the new session will cover the organisational side. The panel discussion can then be more general/global discussion on advocacy.
If we're going for the third session, though, I'd like to find someone else who is willing to take the lead. The reason is that it should be focused on participation and we should let participating chapters/members share their experiences. I feel like I am too deep into it already to be able to do just that.
I am, of course, open to other ideas for splitting the topic. I do believe we have enough things to discuss and having three sessions would allow us to be more targeted and effective.
Dimi

Hello everyone,
I hope you're well.
I'm in the process of writing a couple of submissions for Wikimania 2014 (we're all looking forward to welcoming you to London by the way!).
I wondered if anyone would be interested in joining together to speak about the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU? Wouldn't need to be a lengthy talk, just perhaps 15 minutes with some Q&A, and to offer more volunteers the opportunity to get involved.
Interested? The closing date for submissions is 31 March. I'll make a start and circulate the link shortly.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie
