Hi all,
*COVID-19* reveals the *crucial importance of digital civic engagement* and
informational freedom for years to come. It will serve as a reference point
for pointing out the *merit of voluntary work for Wikipedia *all over the
world.
So WMDE decided to focus it's* summer policy brief *on how Wikipedia helps
people all over the world with vital and trusted medical information
("COVID-19:
Wie Wikipedia uns durch unsichere Zeiten hilft")
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Politikbrief_3_Sommer_2020_Wikimedi…>
in june and distributed it to 6 federal parliamentary comittees of
relevance for free knowledge.
We now had it translated to provide it to Wikimedians who might find it
useful, e.g. for approaching policy makers in their local contexts:
*"COVID-19: How Wikipedia helps us through uncertain times"
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Policy_Brief_-_COVID-19_-…>*
*Our main calls to parliaments and governments:*
- support and express appreciation for digital voluntary work (e.g. by
implementing funding programmes)
- public authorities ought to provide access to publicly funded data
from administrative bodies, public institutions etc. in freely accessible
and editable formats
- support secure legal frameworks in this context
- support evidence-based approaches to regulating online platforms (EU
digital services Act)
Hope you might find the policy brief useful and happy about any feedback!
best regards
Lilli

Hi all,
Back in 2011 the European Commission issued a Recommendation that called
for, among other things, making sure that digital copies of public domain
works remain in the public domain. [1] Although non-binding, this
Recommendation helped us convince the EU legislator in 2019 to get such an
article in the copyright reform of 2019.
Now the Commission is considering updating the document and is asking a
number of questions and giving us the opportunity to send it a position
paper until 14 September 2020.
I have set up a dedicated Meta-Page [2] where I hope you will help me come
up with great answers to the questions. If there are things you think we
should suggest outside of the provided space for answers, this can go into
our position paper. Please message me either on or off list or add it to
the bottom of the page (last section).
I know there are plenty of cultural heritage and digitisation experts in
this group, so I am certain we will stand out by providing great input and
ideas for the new Recommendation. Please don't hesitate to circulate this
to other channels.
Thanks in advance for helping out.
Cheers,
Dimi

Hi everyone,
Sorry for cross-posting, but I think it is helpful. This is an update
regarding the progress of the Movement Strategy and the design of the
transition events.
The Transition Design Group
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
[1] has over the past month been discussing how to create events that can
facilitate a smooth and inclusive Transition process for the movement to
start implementing the Movement Strategy recommendations
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>
[2].
The Support Team has been sharing weekly summaries
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
[3] from the Design Group discussions, which have largely centred around
people and process for the Transition events, as well as ensuring
legitimacy of the process, needed resource, and communications. Transition
will mark a major milestone for our movement to create a collaborative,
18-month implementation plan that will begin to shape the future of our
work, culture, and collaborations.
The Wikimedia Foundation will organize the virtual Transition events,
planned for September to December, 2020. Your help is needed to make sure
the events can be as inclusive, participative, and engaging as possible. We
are excited to share the outline for the transition events
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
with you and invite everyone to provide feedback [4].
The draft outline offers both light and detailed information regarding the
events. Even though the draft outline is available only in English at the
moment, the actual events will be multilingual with materials available in
a variety of languages and formats. The Transition events aim to be easy to
join only once or for multiple events. They are for everyone, whether a
newcomer or a seasoned strategy enthusiast. They are being designed for
diverse participation across time zones and regions in order to create a
movement-wide implementation plan.
The review period for the draft outline is for two (2) weeks from August 06
to 20. After receiving your feedback, the Design Group will finalize the
plan and the Wikimedia Foundation will ensure the delivery of the events
according to the design.
Please comment on the talk page on Meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
[5] and feel free to use the questions below as an orientation:
1.
How can the plan be improved? In your opinion, what are some barriers to
entry that must be lowered so everyone can take part in Transition?
2.
How can we make sure that you and your community have what you need to
participate in the Transition events?
3.
If you have attended other virtual events, what has your experience been
like and what lessons can be applied in this case?
We are hosting office hours to hear from you. Join us on Tuesday Aug. 11 @
15.00 UTC (LINK <http://meet.google.com/gtf-dpdu-bqs>) or Thursday Aug. 13
@ 01.00 UTC (LINK <http://meet.google.com/niq-pdex-cjk>). Alternatively,
you can share your thoughts directly via email strategy2030(a)wikimedia.org.
Hoping that everyone is well and safe in these challenging times in the
world. Very grateful for your time and attention.
On behalf of the Support Team,
Kaarel
