The Estonian office of European Commission is trying to convince me the
copyright of the Berlaymont building in Brussels belongs to the EC. While I
think it might be possible that someone might have asked for the
architect's permit to spread photos of the building, I have seen no proof
of it. Can anyone prove or disprove that claim?

Hi All,
I'm pleased to announce that the Paris Court of Appeals has ruled in favor
of the Wikimedia Foundation in the ongoing *Teissier v. WMF* case, finding
WMF to be a hosting provider under French law. The court stated that Ms.
Teissier may dislike the content included in the French Wikipedia article
about her, but that the content was well within the bounds of free speech.
This outcome is a victory for the Wikimedia projects and for free
expression and knowledge.
You can read more about this decision in our blog post:

Dear all,
Last week we submitted our letter to the European Commission in which we
urge them to harmonize strong freedom of panorama in the EU. We also ask
the Commission to make sure that a new neighboring right for publishers
doesn't harm the freedom to set hyperlinks.
Please find our letter here

Dear all,
As you may already be aware, in June at COMMUNIA we’re sharing the Best Case Scenarios for Copyright. Each Wednesday we present one copyright exception that actually works in a EU member state to demonstrate that user-friendly solutions do not destroy creative industries but benefit the society, the economy and freedom of expression. You might have already seen the Freedom of Panorama scenario we shared last week.
Today we’re covering the parody exception in France. Please have a look at (and share) the basic facts blogpost: http://www.communia-association.org/2016/06/15/parody-exception-bcs-copyrig… <http://www.communia-association.org/2016/06/15/parody-exception-bcs-copyrig…> where a detailed legal study can be found about the scenario.
I hope you find it interesting and worth spreading! If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact us.
Cheers,
Lisette Kalshoven

Hi all,
Just an interesting opinion of an Advocate-General of the Court of Justice
of the EU who says that public libraries should be allowed to e-lend books.
[1] This is something libraries and publishers are at odd about since years.
Now, an AG opinion is only a sort of advice to the judges, who will rule in
the case, but these are usually well researched and structured analyses of
the law.
Cheers,
Dimi

Dear Wikimedians,
Today at Communia we’re launching the Best Case Scenarios for Copyright <http://www.communia-association.org/bcs-copyright/> series, to promote great solutions such as user-friendly copyright limitations. They work in some EU countries and we want to talk about making them (and other good ones) mandatory for the whole EU. It would be great if you could promote the message via social media and any other communication with your partners.
Today we introduce the idea for the campaign and on Wednesday we will publish the first case. Today’s post may be found here <http://www.communia-association.org/2016/06/06/bcs-copyright/> and Communia TT is here <https://twitter.com/communia_eu/status/739782579952443392>.
Best wishes,
Lisette Kalshoven

Dear all
As many of you will know, the EU consultation on Freedom of Panorama and
new neighboring rights for publishers
<https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/news/public-consultation-role…>
is closing on 6/15.
The legal team at WMF is currently preparing a response to the consultation
in order to encourage the European Commission to introduce a strong FoP
exception and harmonize European copyright accordingly. We are planning to
submit tomorrow (6/14). At the same time, we would like to draw your
attention to the community response that FKAGEU is drafting here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EU_policy/FoP_Consultation>.
Best,
Jan

Hi everybody,
Yesterday I added Wikimedia Sverige's answers for the FoP Consultation to
Meta.[1] We have tried to give concrete examples based on our work, and we
were thinking that parts of it should be generalizable and perhaps it could
be off value for some of you when answering the consultation.
Today we also emailed our members and organizations that we have worked
with during the years to ask them to give inputs and send in answers to the
consultation themselves.
Please let me know if you have any comments or questions!

Hello everybody,
The programme for Wikimania Esino Lario is ready [1] and I will be giving a
workshop titled School of Rock(ing) EU Copyright. [2]
It will take place on Thursday, 23 June, in the collaborative space from
14:00 to 17:30.
Since we'll be people with different backgrounds, levels of expertise and
from several continents and I want everyone to feel welcome, I will keep
the "curriculum" open and flexible. I am there so you can pick my brain, to
share our experiences with you and to teach you the tools & tricks of the
trade. Most importantly, we will take time to work on your
national/continental priorities, draft a strategy, prepare your first
actions. Let's get YOU started!
Please add your name if you are interested and don't shy away because
there's "EU" in the title. We can always talk about how to transfer the
European know-how to other places.
After this there will a Global Policy Meetup organised by Jan and Stephen,
which we'll make sure not to attend!
Cheers,
Dimi
