The Android team[0] is excited to announce a _very_ new Wikipedia Android app beta release, v2.1.131-beta-2015-09-28[1]. This revision contains the following features and fixes[2]:
* Completely reworked Nearby screen! View the locations of nearby Wikipedia articles overlaid onto an *interactive map*. Explore Wikipedia articles near your current location, or pan & zoom the map to explore articles in any other part of the world * Significant improvements to the app appearance including the navigation drawer, status bar, and search results * Fix image sizing on high-resolution devices * Fix possible crashes in saved pages and link previews
This is a milestone release warranting a minor version bump from 2.0 to 2.1: it is the *first maps beta release* as well as the first release to shed support for legacy devices[3]. All forthcoming releases will only be available on Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich MR1) and newer[4].
A special mention worth making is that the Android maps client code was authored by Katie Filbert (aude)[5] back in May[6] and has received a lot of help from many people to get released today. Way to go Katie!
You can help make it better too! Read our getting started guide[7]. We can't wait for your contributions!

Be careful in advertising this cross-language: GeoData in many wikis lacks most (or any) data, because it's not using Wikidata. https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T35704 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T110017
These bugs don't look too hard, can we hope them to be fixed as part of this renewed interest in Nearby? It's nice for the map to be prettier but it's sure better if it first contains something. :)

Adding Wikibase / Wikidata integration with GeoData (and PageImages) is something I am currently working on.
Initially, we want to get Special:Nearby to work on Wikidata and then see about having that data also used in the client wikis, as needed.
