Dear fellow Android devs,
A quick heads-up that we've updated the folder structure in our Android app
repo to follow Gradle standard structure.[1] This should help get new
Android developers get up to speed with our app code a bit quicker.
It's best to clone the Git repo to a new folder and do a fresh import into
Android Studio. Be mindful of any git stashes or local branches you might
have in your old Git clone. The app hacking guide has been updated to
reflect the new structure.[2]
Cheers,
Bernd

Subject: "Morelike" suggestions - the results are in!
To: Internal communication for WMF Reading team <
reading-wmf(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
For the last few weeks, we've had an A/B test in the Android app where we
measure user engagement with the "read more" suggestions that we show at
the bottom of each article. We display three suggestions for further
reading, based on either (A) a plain full-text search query based on the
title of the current article, or (B) a query using the "morelike" feature
in CirrusSearch.
And the winner is... (perhaps not entirely surprisingly) "morelike"! Users
who saw suggestions based on "morelike" were over 20% more likely to click
on one of the suggestions.
Here's a quick analysis and chart of the data from the last 10 days:

The Android team[0] is perfectly happy to announce a new Wikipedia
Android app beta release, v2.0.107-beta-2015-08-03[1]. In 499
characters[2], this revision contains the following enhancements:
* New! List of tabs is saved when the app closes for any reason
* New! Table-of-contents button hides itself when not scrolling
* New! Material design enhancements to navigation pane, user messages,
and other UI elements
* New! More places to press-and-hold to open in a new tab: Search!
Nearby! Similar pages! Read More!
* Newly opened tabs now appear behind the active tab
* Neutral toned splash background keeps app launches subtle in dark mode
* Full user roll-out of improved suggested articles
Make it better! Read our getting started guide[3]. We cannot wait for
your contributions!

Hey everyone,
The iOS team has released an update to the iOS app, which is now version
4.1.7. This update is a relatively minor one, mostly crash fixes and
localization updates.
As always, we'd love to hear what you think—especially if you think
something's broken!
Regards,
WMF iOS team

TLDR: Performance audit of the mobile site, please help & chime in
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T105365#1477762
Hi,
The Reading web team is focusing on performance of the site in one of
our quarterly
goal <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T104432>s, specially the mobile
version to improve the experience of all our users on the least powerful
devices.
As part of such goal we've (Baha & Jon) conducted an initial performance
audit of the mobile site, where we've discovered a few interesting facts,
mostly regarding how images are loading and how they are not cached.
We encourage you to read up the phab task
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T105365#1477762 and if it is of your
interest try and help us understand the highest impact areas where we'll be
able to improve the performance of the site, and technical problems you can
foresee in performance profiles of it.
Thanks a lot,
Joaquin
Hi
Last June, the Kiwix team has organised a hackathon focused on mobile
technologies in general and Android in particular.
http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Hackathon_Mobile_2015
Sponsored by Wikimedia Switzerland, this one week long event has been
the occasion to do a few steps forward thx to the hard work of the 4
volunteer developers.
As a result, we are proud to announce the release of Kiwix for Android
1.94/1.95 which brings a lot of improvements. Among others:
* NEW: Revamped tabs system
* NEW: Revamped zoom system
* NEW: Audio/Video suport
* NEW: Updated "Ray Charles" ZIM demo file
* FIXED: AutoCompleteTextView in landscape mode
* FIXED: PDF & EPUB viewing
* FIXED: Many bugs related to "night mode"
* REMOVED: Gingerbread support
* REMOVED: Share with friends
* REMOVED: Zoom button
Install in one click on your device:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixmobile
We have also created a new set of tools allowing us to generate and
publish quickly Android Bundle Apps (app+content). These apps are really
useful for users because in one click in the Google Play Store they have
what they want. We have started to use these tools and have already
released two high value apps:
* Wikivoyage in English:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixcustomwikivoya…
* Wikimed in English:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixcustomwikimed
An other consequence of this bundling software solution is that it is
now trivial for NGO & Companies to distribute devices with free content
pre-packaged on it.
Regards
Emmanuel

Hi all - we hold a Reading showcase every 4 weeks where people show off
cool work and experimental projects. Thought some people on the list may
have an interest in the following from the one earlier this week. For a
couple of the presentations the screensharing cut out, so that was trimmed
from the end.

Here are the ones where video isn't available.
Kaity and Sherah showed the feeds prototype:

Baha showed off output fromfrom Barry the Browser Test Bot, which Jon
Robson has been rocking:

Then someone should have updated its talk page.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schema_talk:MobileWebClickTracking
See e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schema_talk:EchoPrefUpdate
Back in 2013 the talk pages for schemas was where we kept track of their
use. (Dario, is this still the case?) It's not ideal but the alternative is
looking at the git logs of operations/mediawiki-config and the extension to
figure out when things were disabled or decommissioned.
I did it this time, but I think engineers should update the talk page when
they stop using a schema, unless there's a better approach.
> It got split into main-menu-daily, page-ui-daily and various other schemas.
>
I think you mean MobileWebMainMenuClickTracking and
MobileWebUIClickTracking. I pasted baho's "break up MobileWebClickTracking"
commit message into the talk page.
FWIW https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex/Schema:MobileWeb
lists 18 schemas, the EventLoggingRegisterSchemas hook[1] registers 9
schemas, and the active schemas category [2] only has four MobileWeb
schemas.
