Another mobile-CSS bug

Another bug in en.Wikipedia's mobile CSS, also affecting our app, has been reported; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Template_v_… this relates to class="hlist", which is also widely used in Navboxes and some infoboxes. Mobile site usage

I was wondering if there has been any analysis on the types of browsers that users use to access MediaWiki sites. I've been working on the MobileFrontend extension and am keen to understand the audience better. I've had a look around the internet but it's a big place and I've not found anything yet. :) In particular I was interested if there is any evidence that certain people in certain countries use Wikipedia's/other mediawiki instance mobile site on desktop computers due to the lower page size/load and what browsers they use to do this. Rebooted Wikipedia iOS v3.1 Beta1 Released!

Heya everyone! Since the rollout of our official Wikipedia Android application, we've been working on providing the same experience for our iOS users. Were happy to announce that we've polished off our beta enough for you to try a total reboot of our iOS app. For those that just want to get going download it from here, drag into iTunes, and sync. http://dumps.wikimedia.org/iOS/Wikipedia-3.1beta1.ipa (MD5 4b0c309753cde4da3f4516d4a4952773) NOTE: If you haven't given us your UDID then this IPA will NOT work for you. We need to have your IPA before we build a new version in order for it to work. If your try the IPA and find that it wont install then follow these instructions and then send us your UDID http://www.innerfence.com/howto/find-iphone-unique-device-identifier-udid Load it up on your iOS devices (iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad) and use it as you normally would. Features you should particularly test are: 1. Lack of crashes! This is our most requested feature from the current app in the market, and we are glad to oblige. The new app does not crash when you look at it the wrong way. Please try various ways of crashing the app, and report your success/failure to do so to us! 2. Search suggestions and full text search. Start typing a few characters, and pick out an article from the list of suggestions provided. You can also tap the search button to perform a full text search over all of wikipedia. 3. Saved pages. You can save pages when online and read them later when you are offline. Try it in different combinations and with different sized articles. 4. Read article in other language. This feature lets you read the article you are currently viewing in other languages. Try it out for multiple languages, with different connectivity states and check for any inconsistent states. 5. Did You Mean? search suggestions when searching. Type in a few misspelt words when searching, and wait for the app to suggest spelling corrections 6. Nearby Me feature shows you points of interest near you that have WIkipedia Articles! Try it out with GPS available and without, in different parts of the world with different languages. 7. Tapping co-ordinates in any article (eg. article on San Francisco) shows a map view with articles around that article. Explore this functionality across many geographic regions and languages! 8. Access Wikipedia in your native language. Use the settings menu to change your content language, and then try doing everything else here. Should provide the same seamless experience in any language. 9. Share page functionality is broken for now. Next beta! 10. Generally play around with the app, explore new features! Route diagram display problems

Wikipedia Android app v1.1 beta1 ready for testing!

Off the really great success of Wikipedia V1.0 for Android (http://bit.ly/xvoPrR ) and its impressive roll out (http://bit.ly/A5mva7) the mobile team is now moving full speed with V1.1 For those that just want to get started you can download the new build from here: http://dumps.wikimedia.org/android/Wikipedia-v1.1-beta1.apk (http://bit.ly/zpNLyF) We've been reading feedback as quickly as we get it and numerous features have bubbled up to the top for our next major release. With V1.1 we've added : - Integration with QuickSearch in Android - Open Wikipedia links from other apps in the Wikipedia App (URL Intents) - OSM replaced Google Maps for nearby view (using MapQuest tiles) - Added Did You Mean? to search results - Moved to jQuery off Zepto - Touching co-ordinates inside articles shows map overlay - Full text search - Added 'Clear History' - Added 'Clear Saved Pages' - Localized a few messages that were missing - Enable app to be saved to SD card - Major code-refactor, still needs more love :) - Improved tablet experience - Move to using Hogan.js for templating - Fixed a lot of tiny bugs! Tap the result that points to our mobile site. The app should pop up an intent menu. Choose 'Wikipedia' as the default app. * Switch your phone to a language that is written Right to Left. Use the application as you normally would, and report anything that is not what you would expect. We now have nascent RTL UI support, and need all the testing we can possibly get * Tap near by in the App. Navigate around the map and select whatever pins you might see. Tap a pin to go to the article detail page * Search for 'Mumbai' in the App search bar. Go to the article. Scroll to the bottom of the info box. Tap the GPS coordinate. You should then see a map with geographically related articles * Search for 'Charile Sava' in the App search bar. Note that no relevant match shows up. Tap the magnifying glass to the a full text search and note that 'Ann curtis' comes up * Search for 'San Francisko' . I took the liberty and built out this new structure under https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Wikipedia%20App We now have real components, versions, and milestones. One thing thats missing is to clean up the template for filing a new bug in order for it to show only mobile OS's. I've filed a bug for that here https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34668 I also noticed that there was a significant amount of bugs (ex. 30389) that were moved into mobile apps that should have not. hexmode is cleaning those up now. --tomasz On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 6:48 PM, Mark A. Developing an open source Wikipedia J2ME app for Symbian S40

Cross posting to reach a larger audience. We've gotten word from the Global Development group that a lot of our partners are asking for an official Symbian S40 J2ME app for Wikipedia. Before talking to any potential development houses I wanted to reach out to both of these lists to see if anyone has a lead on any open source developers who would want to contract for a project like this and/or volunteer with us. The feature set would be fairly basic including but not limited to * Reading articles * Bookmarks * History * Interwiki links Now developing for J2ME is a beast unto itself as Derk-Jan https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32700#c1 points out but the potential install base of these phones is still fairly large making it a good strategic goal. We'd love to do this in PhoneGap but its support starts at S60 and not S40. I see two Symbian based apps here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Mobile_access#Symbian_applications but their both just for offline reading Curious to hear peoples thought/experiences. --tomasz
