For those of you eager to know whats coming next in the beta .. we've
created a simple status page to keep track of everything thats moving in
and out of the beta
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Projects/beta
Let us know how it works.

I wanted to alert us to an alarming trend in our overall mobile page stats
http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesPageViewsMonthlyMobile.htm
We've been trending down over the last couple of months. This is not good.
We need these stats to be growing not dropping. If any of us see any reason
about why this may be happening then we need to speak up. I did some
digging and found out that we may have another logging issue.
Asher from our ops team informed me that
*binasher <member:binasher>: *bad… i need to do something like make puppet
monitor and ensure that our customized varnish logging daemon is always
running
*binasher <member:binasher>: *it died on one of the varnish servers, but
not the other
Which would account for the massive dips we are seeing. We can confirm that
the logger died on 10/15 and that we've been under reporting for October
and November. October is likely under reported by up to 25% while November
is under reported by up to 50%.
Now i'm happy that we have a simple operations related reason for this dip
but we should have caught it sooner. With the foundations goal of 2 billion
page views by July we have to stay on top of this.

We recently completed a Hackathon in India where the themes were:
* localization
* mobile
* offline
In summary, over one weekend more than 50 volunteers from many parts of
India added their hard work and insights to the technical foundation of
Wikipedia. In the mobile area alone, volunteers contributed to 17 features,
as listed here (features that were worked on are marked with an "H"):
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Projects/features#India_Hackathon
We also got support and input from most of the major mobile operators in
India about how to make our user experience better. Free access to
Wikipedia is moving forward on a number of fronts, as we identified several
forms of collaboration, not just in the form of Wikipedia Zero. For
example, there seems to be widespread interest in using an RSS feed of the
Article of the Day, and the top 5 languages in India are important.
This was our first hackathon in India and all in all, it was a resounding
success.
For those of you who were at the event, many thanks and congratulations for
your achievements in such a short period of time! We certainly hope you
continue to stay involved and continue to contribute.
IRC is a good way for developers to stay in touch. Join wikimedia-mobile on

Brandon, Brion, and I chatted about using the mood bar as a trending tool
for the opt in beta and i'd like to open it up to the members of this list.
The problem as I see it is that we have more and more beta users joining
and more and more features being enabled on the beta. Its getting tough to
know exactly why someone is happy or sad within individual comments as most
people don't want to have to fill out a form every single time they see an
issue.
What i propose is that we use the mood bar system to gauge the pulse of
changes within the mobile beta. This would not be used in any way to gauge
new editor trends like were currently doing on the desktop. Instead it
would be allow us to track how happy or sad people are with the beta over
time. For those users who really wanted to give us detail we would have a
140 character input box.
My thinking here is to make it as simple as possible for everyone to let us
know how were doing overall.

Ok, so since no one else is discussing this...
And maybe this is just my egomania gone crazy....
But... does the mobile site seem less responsive recently?
I'm finding it sluggish. :P
:P
Things I can see that might be causing it:
* The JS isn't bundled
* The JS isn't gzipped!
* The CSS is in two requests (bundle)
Any ideas? Am I just crazy?

Interesting indeed, Wikipedia zero could probably push Africa to number one. Any updates on Wikipedia zero in Africa?

Nice write up from GSMA of how global mobile use is growing in Africa.

Especially when we consider how many "unconnected" people we could reach with wikipedia zero.

Subject: Mobile Photo Uploads: Android uploader and more
To: commons-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi folks,
as you may or may not know, we ran a coding competition in October
which included mobile photo upload as one of the challenges.
You can see the submissions here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/October_2011_Coding_Challenge/Submissions
The submissions include a "Share with Commons" application for
Android. It can be installed through the Android market and the source
code is available on GitHub.
https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.michiel1972.mainhttps://github.com/michiel1972/shareWithCommons
The application adds a "Share with Wikimedia Commons" option to the
"Share with" menu that's available in the Android Gallery app. That
is, when you're viewing a picture on your phone, you can easily upload
that particular picture to Commons through the same process that's
used for Picasa and other websites.
I've tested it, and it works. It doesn't prompt for categories and the
license selection is basically just a template field, but it gets the
job done. Images uploaded using the app are added to this category:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_uploaded_by_Android_app
We'll reach out to the author to see if they're interested in
continuing to develop it and host it in Wikimedia's SVN.
There are some other submissions as well:
* An effort to build uploading functionality into the official
Wikipedia Android app by User:Tpt
* Three iOS / Objective C implementations of varying degrees of
completeness. I haven't tested those yet, but we'll review them as
well and share notes.
The full list of submissions can be found here -- please add your own
comments on the talk page:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/October_2011_Coding_Challenge/Submissions
Thanks :)

Interesting find, if only for the swipe to go back and forth action. I
think that's an important interaction tool when we know people love
following links in the wiki.

Wikipedia Companion sets the new bar for Wikipedia readers on Android.
You will appreciate the beautifully designed graphics that elevate
WIkipedia from a website to something resembling a classic book or
encyclopedia. This Wikipedia app autocompletes your searches with
article snippets as you type.Bookmark your favorite articles for later
reference. Browse your history of articles visited, or clear it with
one touch! Wikipedia Companion is language-friendly, so you can search
Wikipedia in many languages.
Wikipedia Companion formats wikipedia pages for easy reading. No need
to scroll sideways to grasp the whole article. Instead of a clunky
back button, you can swipe left and right to navigate through articles
you've visited, making Wikipedia Companion behave like Pulse News
Reader.
Wikipedia Companion lets you share articles with your friends, and
displays images in a lightbox display similar to the Facebook and
Twitter apps.
Upcoming features: the next version will have the ability to save
articles for offline reading, so you can choose Wikipedia articles to
have available for reading even when you don't have internet access.
