Good day, Does somebody on that list know where I should go about this issue:
When I open the Cree wikipedia (cr.wikipedia.org) from my work computer, I only see squares instead of Cree syllabics. First, I would like to know if that's normal or if that's bug. Second, would there be a way to fix that from the MediaWiki end since people on computers like that don't have access to change the settings of their browser or install new fonts (now I'm from a work computer, but same thing could happen from a computer in a library for example). I'm using Internet Explorer 7.
I have posted it there: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Localisation#Font_not_working , but I'm not sure it's the right place.
I remember reading about the extension WebFonts to avoid those issue, how can we go to create one for Cree if it doesn't exist? And where could I find more info about that?
Thanks, JP Beland alias Amqui
Hoi, The problem is that you do not have the Cree font installed on your computer. When there is a freely licensed font for the script used by the Cree language, it will be possible to include it in the Webfonts functionality. Similarly an input method can be included so that you can type the characters. Thanks, Gerard
PS it is not a bug. It works as designed.

I think you need to install a language pack or a font. I can't see it a work (I use Chrome here) but at home is OK (I use Firefox)

Hoi, You don't. You seek a font that is either freely licensed or you talk to the copyright holder and ask for it to be made available under a free license.
Often you are successful because it does make the language more alive.. that is often the reason to make the font in the first place. Thanks, Gerard

I didn't ask for font that works, I asked if there was a way to make it work for everybody without them having to install fonts. And there is one, it's called the Extension:WebFonts. However, for them to make available for Cree for example, they need a free licensed font of the language.
We could also look at providing our own support to create new free licensed font, but I would have to look more in details for that.
On another note, if you are looking for free (of charge) fonts for North American Aboriginal languages with syllabic you can go there: http://www.languagegeek.com/font/fontdownload.html

I've just found out that those fonts are under GNU license, that should be compatible with CC-BY-SA...
