Dear all,
My name is Lizzy Jongma. I am datamanager at the Rijksmuseum and I am currently trying to do a (new) batch upload to Wikimedia Commons with the Batch Upload tool.
We are currently mapping our internal metadata to the GLAMwiki format(s) and as you can all imagine: this always leads to a million questions. I will not send you all a million questions but I would like to send you all this one:
These are the dimensions of an object in our collection, written down in Adlib and then exported as XML to our website:
1. <dimension>
2. <dimension.notes>
3. <value lang="0"/>
4. <value lang="1"/>
5. </dimension.notes>
6. <dimension.unit>
7. <value lang="0">cm</value>
8. <value lang="1">cm</value>
9. </dimension.unit>
10.<dimension.value>
11.<value lang="0">379.5</value>
12.<value lang="1">379,5</value>
13.</dimension.value>
14.<dimension.type>
15.<value lang="0">height</value>
16.<value lang="1">hoogte</value>
17.</dimension.type>
18.</dimension>
19.<dimension>
20.<dimension.notes>
21.<value lang="0"/>
22.<value lang="1"/>
23.</dimension.notes>
24.<dimension.unit>
25.<value lang="0">cm</value>
26.<value lang="1">cm</value>
27.</dimension.unit>
28.<dimension.value>
29.<value lang="0">453.5</value>
30.<value lang="1">453,5</value>
31.</dimension.value>
32.<dimension.type>
33.<value lang="0">width</value>
34.<value lang="1">breedte</value>
35.</dimension.type>
36.</dimension>
37.<dimension>
38.<dimension.notes>
39.<value lang="0"/>
40.<value lang="1">gewicht met lijst</value>
41.</dimension.notes>
42.<dimension.unit>
43.<value lang="0">kg</value>
44.<value lang="1">kg</value>
45.</dimension.unit>
46.<dimension.value>
47.<value lang="0">337</value>
48.<value lang="1">337</value>
49.</dimension.value>
50.<dimension.type>
51.<value lang="0">weight</value>
52.<value lang="1">gewicht</value>

I am currently writing an XSLT stylesheet to transform this XML to the Wikimedia format for documenting Works of Art:
Dimensions - dcterms: SizeOrDuration ('class') - dimensions Use Size formatting template: Dimensions of the artwork: 1D (length), 2D (width × height) or 3D (width × height × depth). Please use {{Size}}https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Size formatting template, such as: {{Size|unit=cm|width=76.7|height=83.5}} <- gives Height: 83.5 cm (32.9 in). Width: 76.7 cm (30.2 in).
But, as you can see Size only consists of one type of unit and our dimensions consist of two types of units for specific parts.
How do I solve this? Repeat dcterms: SizeOrDuration ('class') for different units? Ignore units for weights etc?
Thanks for your input!
Best wishes

Lizzy, You have zeroed in on our biggest weakness - how we deal with measurement units of artworks. Alas, this is not consistent across all artwork templates! The dimensions field is a free form field for that reason. When we think in painting terms, which are thankfully 2D, there is still a lot of confusion: centimeters or inches? height first or width first? with or without the frame? the depth of the frame - do we want that too?
In the end, we tend to go with the one with the loudest voice or the one with the largest presence on Commons (um for paintings that might be you). Our problem is that you use adlib and others use emuseum and none of these programs work the same (just like hospital file systems - how to we approach the project of unified medical information?)
Since yesterday we can add units to Wikidata and Maarten Dammers has made some assumptions about how to move forward. We will accept height and width and use qualifiers for "outer" measurements, since it's the "inner" measurements we see most often. You can join this conversation though and I think you should!
So to answer your question, how do you expect your information to appear in the artwork template? Can you link to a Rijksmuseum object on Commons that displays information in the way you expect? If not how would you improve it?
Here is a painting that I was viewing a few minutes ago: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:De_molen_bij_Wijk_bij_Duurstede_Rijk...

Hey, I uploaded that. :-)
My approach to these initial Rijks uploads was to just get on with it and worry about format fixes later. Our templates do not handle arrays in a parameter, but that is effectively what we are attempting to do with dimensions against artworks. Though paintings have height and width, I have handled other objects such as statues or ancient artefacts, where there may be many key dimensions to describe, such as the diameter of a cup along with the width of its base.
I suggest using the free format of the parameter to add dimensions in a consistent way. It can always be unpicked and reformatted later.
If wikidata can resolve this, some interesting questions could be asked later on, such as automatically identifying miniatures, or life size statues of people.
Fae
Fae, Yes and I am very glad you did! I reuse a lot of your upload work and plot ways to harvest it for Wikidata, which is not easy of course. I totally agree it would be great to have dimensional data on Wikidata in such a way that you could identify miniatures (but also small bronzes or trophy cups from outside statues, etc.)
I also would always favor an approach of "dump what you have in the free dormat fields", but increasingly I am also thinking that we approach this all wrong. We should first dump the data into Wikidata, check with queries that it is as expected, and then generate the uploads to Commons, not the other way around.

Hi Fae and Jane,
Thank you both for your quick reply! I can imagine how it all started with paintings and from a paintings/works-of-art-on-paper perspective the 2D approach is excellent. But with cups and statues... and museums with very heavy paintings.. You get weird results. I will try and use a free format and hope maybe someone will consider a more extensive format for dimensions? Something like: {{Size|witdh=76.7|unit=cm|height=83.5|unit=cm}} instead of: {{Size|unit=cm|width=76.7|height=83.5}}? In the Rijksmuseum case we are not dependant on vendors etc. so we can write XSLT to match the format Wikimedia prefers.
Thanks for your help and tips and I hope you don't mind my questions!

Thats a great solution! Thanks!
Tangentially to that: for a while now I was playing with the idea of adding an extra parameter to {{size}}. For media like < https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Confirmation_du_roi_Louis_VI_le_Gros..., I had dimensions for the piece of parchment and the seal. I was thinking of something like {{Size|unit=cm|diameter=9|part=seal}}. Would that be useful in your opinions ?
Jean-Fred, That is an interesting example. In Wikidata terms this is of course a composite object. I would then describe it in two items, the parchment and the seal, where the seal is part of the parchment. I can understand that on Commons you might feel it's overkill to have two images, but for someone doing a quick comparison of seals it may be nice to make a derivative image and rotate the image to straighten it out. Maybe there already is one, in which case the Wikidata "has part" property would be associated with the commons "gallery of one" inclusion under the "other versions" field. Jane

Hi Jean-Fred,
That is a very good solution! It is very precise because it also tells you what you were measuring and easy to implement too. I would be all for your solution! (And let me share our measurement nightmare: https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/search/objecten?q=BK-1995-3&p=1&ps=12&... an 18th century mantelpiece. Hi Lizzy,
Thank you for your work !
Formatting it like {{size|cm|height=379.5}} {{size|cm|width=453.5}} {{weight|kg|337}} seems like the most logical course, if you're not sure all the units for height/width will be the same.
Thats a great solution! Thanks!
Tangentially to that: for a while now I was playing with the idea of adding an extra parameter to {{size}}. For media like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Confirmation_du_roi_Louis_VI_le_Gros_1_-_Archives_Nationales_-_AE-II-132.jpg, I had dimensions for the piece of parchment and the seal. I was thinking of something like {{Size|unit=cm|diameter=9|part=seal}}. Would that be useful in your opinions ?

Oh Lizzy that is a lovely object. We have lots of chimneypieces on Commons (most of them came through our bulk upload from the RCE). I think this one is special because each sculpture could have its own image. We see this with the chimeypieces where often a painting is included which gets uploaded to the RKD. The RKD then calls this a series (often there are other objects besides the whole chimney ensemble in the room, such as wall paintings and so forth). I would go ahead and stuff anything you have into the dimensions field, but untangling the various objects is difficult when it is more than one. That's why it is best to have images of all the related objects tied together in a category, but I guess the upload tool won't do that.

I am not going to upload this item now, but a solution like yours would create some sort of order in this chaos).

I am currently writing an XSLT stylesheet to transform this XML to the Wikimedia format for documenting Works of Art:
*Dimensions*– dcterms: SizeOrDuration (‘class’) – dimensions
Use Size formatting template: /Dimensions of the artwork: 1D (length), 2D (width × height) or 3D (width × height × depth). Please use //{{Size}} https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Size//formatting template, such as: /
/{{Size|unit=cm|width=76.7|height=83.5}} <— gives Height: 83.5 cm (32.9 in). Width: 76.7 cm (30.2 in)./
But, as you can see Size only consists of one type of unit and our dimensions consist of two types of units for specific parts.
How do I solve this? Repeat dcterms: SizeOrDuration (‘class’) for different units? Ignore units for weights etc?
Last night I was looking at https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/SK-C-5 . And here for the size it has "h 379.5 cm × w 453.5 cm". This is the size of the painting without it's frame? I'm wondering about the best way to deal with the size of the painting with or without a frame, see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_sum_of_all_paintings...
Maarten
Hi Maarten,
We measure paintings without their frames (give or take an exception of course): most frames are NOT original (even frames that State the name of the artist are usually 19th century frames for 17th century paintings). We also swap frames: when we can get a better/more original frame etc.
So in my opinion it is best to measure paintings without frame and/or state clearly weather measurements are with or without frames.
Btw: most frames in the Rijksmuseum are considered (semi-)objects themselves and they have their own inventory number (SK-L numbers) and own measurements.

Hi all,
I mapped inscriptions this afternoon and was wondering if/how/weather the inscriptions tags could be expanded? This is a random inscriptions sample from our collection: the inscription consists of a type of inscription / content of inscription /method of inscription etc.
<inscriptions xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#">collector's mark gestempeld</inscriptions>
<inscriptions xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#">date letter "E"</inscriptions> Would it be interesting to split inscriptions up in a template?
Best wishes Lizzy
