federico,
what hurdles are you facing in regards to using gwtoolset with beic metadata?

Hey everyone,
as one of the last things for my Wikipedian in Residency for the
National Archive in the Netherlands i've written a tool to preprocess
XML dumps from their API for processing in the GWT.
Check it out here:
http://tools.wmflabs.org/hay/gwtcook/
I've played around with the GWT with dumps from the National Archive
API, and not all the fields map nicely to the Commons template tags.
Because i like my colleagues there to use the GWT themselves without
my help i thought it would be useful to have a simple tool where they
could upload an XML file from their API and get a transformed version
with extra fields for the GWT upload.
I did a little test run on Commons Beta (haven't got the GWT flag on
production yet) and it seems to work properly there.
Anyway, i could imagine that this might be useful for other people as
well, so if you have some PHP skills feel free to write a
'transformer' and open a pull request so i can include it in the tool.
Code is available over here:
https://github.com/hay/wiki-tools.
Specifically, look at the class-gwtcook*.php files in the 'lib' directory.
Let me know if you've got any comments or remarks.
Kind regards,
-- Hay

Thanks for your suggestion of upload from hard disk to tools.wmflabs.org
(although not yet clear to me, and would this upload from hard disk be
allowed there, apart from subsequent upload to Commons?).
Uploads from Amazon s3 or Dropbox to Commons with GWT were not allowed a
few months ago by sysops, when i had to upload 2000 images from the Peace
Palace Library.

Hi
In case no one noticed it: I opened this bug last week, which prevents me
from finalising my mass upload:
<https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68285>
Would be awesome if anyone had some time to look into it!
Thanks,

Hi;
I was in some GWToolset talks in last Wikimania.
Congratulations for the tool and the project.
Following I'll explain 2 cases in which it is necessary to upload files to
Commons but I'm afraid that, by now, GWToolset it is not still the solution.
Then this is a call for alternative options to do it.
[1] Case 1: Illustraciència
Illustraciència is a Scientific Illustration Award promoted by ACCC
(Catalan Science Communicators Association).
By an agreement with them when the participants submit the images they can
choose the option to "liberate with CC-by-sa to upload to Commons".
In the last edition 200 participants chose this option.
Now they need to upload it, but they don't have a database online, only
high resolution files in a computer folder and posts in a WP blog with low
resolution images.
http://illustraciencia.blogspot.com.es/http://illustraciencia.cat/en/galeria-segona-edicio/
Commonist it is not the option neither the UploadWizard, because every
image have a different author.
There is any solution for them now? And for the future Award editions?
[2] Case 2: local archives
I'm in contact with two local communities archives in two
neighbourhoods in Barcelona area. They have lots of photos of the
neighbourhoods
evolution, social events and historical struggles for political and civil
rights.
The idea is to upload several collections of 100 or 200 photos with similar
subjects but from different authors (they will do a task of contacting
copyright holders to liberate it). Again Commonist and UploadWizard are not
the adequate tools and uploading one by one could be hard and would make
them desist.
What we can do in this cases?
There is an option to do that?
Thanks in advance;
David Gómez

Hello everyone!
I just started as a technical assistant for Wikimedia Finland and my
task is to teach GWToolset among other things. However, I have some
problems with it since nothing gets uploaded to the Commons Beta.
Here is one record from my XML:
<record>
<dc:author>Santeri Levas</dc:author>
<dc:subject>The lady of the Ainola household sitting resting
in the sun</dc:subject>
<dc:source lang="en">The Finnish Museum of Photography</dc:source>
<dc:source lang="fi">Suomen valokuvataiteen museo</dc:source>
<dc:rights>Cc-by-sa-4.0</dc:rights>
<url>http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7437/11064002985_a17cab711c_n.jpg</url>
</record>
Is there something wrong with it? Everything goes well to the final
stage without errors but nothing is uploaded. Also the domain
staticflickr.com seems to be on the whitelist.
Maybe you could help a newcomer little bit?
Best regards,
Ari

Hey folks :)
We're starting to pick up speed with structured data support for
Commons now. It'd be great to have you all on board for this. Planning
documents are linked below. I hope to see many of you interested in
multimedia at the office hour on September 3rd.
Cheers
Lydia

Subject: Structured Data on Commons
To: Multimedia Mailing List <multimedia(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Greetings!
We invite you to join a discussion about Structured Data on Commons,
to help us plan our next steps for this project.
The Structured Data initiative proposes to store and retrieve
information for media files in machine-readable data on Wikimedia
Commons, using Wikidata tools and practices, as described on our new
project page (1).
The purpose of this project is to make it easier for users to read and
write file information, and to enable developers to build better tools
to view, search, edit, curate and use media files. To that end, we
propose to investigate this opportunity together through community
discussions and small experiments. If these initial tests are
successful, we would develop new tools and practices for structured
data, then work with our communities to gradually migrate unstructured
data into a machine-readable format over time.
The Multimedia team and the Wikidata team are starting to plan this
project together, in collaboration with many community volunteers
active on Wikimedia Commons and other wikis. We had a truly inspiring
roundtable discussion about Structured Data at Wikimania a few weeks
ago, to define a first proposal together (2).
We would now like to extend this discussion to include more community
members that might benefit from this initiative. Please take a moment
to read the project overview on Commons, then let us know what you
think, by answering some of the questions on its talk page (3).
We also invite you to join a Structured Data Q&A on Wednesday
September 3 at 19:00 UTC, so we can discuss some of the details live
in this IRC office hours chat. Please RSVP if you plan to attend (4).
Lastly, we propose to form small workgroups to investigate workflows,
data structure, research, platform, features, migration and other open
issues. If you are interested in contributing to one of these
workgroups, we invite you to sign up on directly on our hub page (5)
-- and help start a sub-page for your workgroup.
We look forward to some productive discussions with you in coming
weeks. In previous roundtables, many of you told us this is the most
important contribution that our team can make to support multimedia in
coming years. We heard you loud and clear and are happy to devote more
resources to bring it to life, with your help.
We are honored to be working with the Wikidata team and talented
community members like you to take on this challenge, improve our
infrastructure and provide a better experience for all our users.
Onward!
