Hi colleagues in education!
Wiki Ed is collaborating this year with the International Fact Checking
Network to encourage our students and professors to add a citation to
Wikipedia as part of International Fact Checking Day on April 2. We have a
blog post going up this week about it on our blog (draft pasted below), and
I wanted to give program leaders in other countries a heads-up in case you
wanted to join us in participating. I'll also be writing a post for their
blog encouraging everyone to check facts on Wikipedia.
I know Citation Hunt is available in several languages, and it's the
*International* Fact Checking Day, so hopefully it's available in your
language if you want to join us in encouraging your program participants to
check some facts on April 2. :)

Participate in International Fact Checking Day on April 2
International Fact Checking Day is April 2, 2017 -- and we at Wiki
Education have joined the initiative! We encourage you to participate by
helping check facts on Wikipedia.
Participating is easy:
1.
Log in to your Wikipedia account.
2.
Go to the Citation Hunt tool:
https://tools.wmflabs.org/citationhunt/en?id=52d531e5&cat=all This will
give you a sentence from a Wikipedia article with the dreaded “Citation
Needed” tag.
3.
Do some research to determine if the sentence in question is accurate
according to sources.
4.
If it is not accurate, click the “Edit” button on the section, delete
the fact in question, and put in your edit summary, “Remove uncited claim I
cannot find literature to support #FactCheckIt” -- or edit it to be true,
and then follow step #5.
5.
If it is accurate, find a source that meets Wikipedia’s Reliable Sources
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources>
guidelines. Click the “edit” button on the section where the fact is
listed, then click “Cite” and follow the directions to cite a source. Save
the page. When you’re prompted to add an edit summary, say “Added citation
#FactCheckIt”.
Adding the #FactCheckIt hashtag will enable us to track the impact of this
initiative -- so be sure to include it!
Feel free to repeat the steps to add more citations to facts. While we
encourage you to participate specifically on April 2, facts can be updated
any time, so don’t feel restricted to just participating then.

As we mentioned last month, the Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve.
Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list,[2] and posted on Meta-Wiki.[3] Each month, we are sending overviews of these updates to this list as well.
Here is a overview of the updates that have been sent since our message last month:
Update 7 on Wikimedia movement strategy process (16 February 2017)
- Development of documentation for Tracks A & B
Update 8 on Wikimedia movement strategy process (24 February 2017)
- Introduction of Track Leads for all four audience tracks
Update 9 on Wikimedia movement strategy process (2 March 2017)
- Seeking feedback on documents being used to help facilitate upcoming community discussions

Dear Collab members,
It’s time to set our meeting for the month of March. Please indicate your
preferences in the following doodle: http://doodle.com/poll/tyz93c3it67rb6ps
In-person meeting planning
In our agenda this month, we will discuss the location and possible dates
for the in-person meeting (to happen between may and June).
It might be time for you to check on your Phabricator account and make sure
the activities you have been carrying out as a Collab member are
represented there, as this will be an element to be considered for the
scholarships to the in-person meeting. We will also provide an alternative
means to share what you’ve been working on, since not everyone has been
active on Phabricator this year.
Strategy discussion and the April meeting.
You are probably aware that the discussion of the strategy for the movement
(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017 ) has
begun, and will gain momentum during the WikiCON17, in Berlin.
As a result, the Collab has been requested to weigh in with its perceptions
of what the strategy could be.
An initial report has to be presented by April 10, which prompts me to
request that we schedule our meeting for April between the 5th and the 7th.
I therefore request that you indicate your preferences for that meeting in
the following doodle: http://doodle.com/poll/3n62sm9uxea8mwbh
This meeting will probably take more time than the usual meetings, so we
are proposing a two hours meeting.
Best regards,
Vahid.

Dear Collab members,
Based on the on-wiki and the call we had last week, it seems we have
reached a consensus ergarding what membership of the Collab should look
like. I'm including the description of (what i understand to be) membership
for your consideration. I'm also sharing it to the Wiki where we've had our
discussion. I would like to request your comments, especially if you see
something that is different from what you expect.
__________________________________________
The Education Collab is a relatively new structure within the Wikimedia
Movement. As such, it is evolving and adapting to its context and the
opportunities that arise around it. Since October, and up to now, there’s
been a discussion around the evolution of one aspect of the Collab:
membership. Based on discussions over email, video and on wiki, there seems
to be a consensus on the following ideas:
Open membership
The Education Collab needs to move to an open membership model, where
anyone interested in contributing to the goals of the Collab is welcome to
join and participate. Contributing to those goals is in no way exclusive to
the Collab: anyone is welcome to help reach them. Collab members happen to
focus a significant part of their volunteering time to them, and use the
Collab as a mechanism to facilitate collaboration around those goals.
In practical terms, as in most Wikiprojects, membership means signing on
the Wiki page, thus indicating your willing participation and dedication of
time and energy to pursuing those goals.
The expectation linked to membership is thus focused on your contribution
to achieving those goals. The goals are set by consensus, and support the
larger Wikipedia Education Program goals.
Monitoring contributions from the Collab members
In order for the Collab members to learn from each other and from each
others’ contributions, the following means of sharing the achievements are
considered:
1.
Use of Phabricator: This is the main tool to register your contributions
to the Collab goals. Activities, reports, and any relevant contribution to
the Collab goals should be represented here. There is a dedicated
Phabricator project for the Education Collab at
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/1479/
2.
Sharing activities and results through additional communication
channels:
1.
Attendance at Collab meetings, while not a requirement, helps the
Collab as a whole to hear your voice, and helps you benefit from
input from
the Collab
2.
Sharing to the Collab mailing list is also beneficial, be it to share
activities, successes, challenges or asking questions to your Collab
colleagues.
3.
Other communication channels may emerge, depending on the needs of
the Collab. Participation in them accelerates the achievements of the
Collab as a whole.
These means of monitoring the Collab’s activities will help the Collab
assess its value and contributions to the Education Program and the
Wikimedia Movement.
_______________________________________________
Let me know what you think!
Best Regards,
Vahid.

In-person meeting of the Collab
It's time to start thinking about the coming Face-to-Face meeting of the
Collab.
One key question we need to look at is: *Where shall we hold the in-person
meeting?* Last year the meeting was held in Stockholm, and it's vital to
reach an agreement of where we should be holding the coming meeting.
*Are there a Collab members that would like to volunteer to be the host?*
Please let us know as soon as possible.
Topics to be covered:
Among other topics, we would like to propose that during the in-person
meeting we take a fresh look at the goals of the Collab, to see how they
align with what the Collab wants to get done.
A new topic we would like to propose is the creation of a framework for
"quality" in Education programs.
A placeholder for the meetup has been created on-wiki at:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Wikipedia_Education_Collabora…
WikiCon17
At the initiative of WMIL and WMAR, an *Education Session*, dedicated to
Education Programs will be held parallel to the Learning Days, right before
WikiCon. We expect this will make sure that Education is included in the
discussion on strategy that will be held during WikiCon. A few of the
members of the Collab will be participating, as representatives for their
Affiliates.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Evaluation/News/Learning_Days_for_Wi…
There might also be an opportunity to have a meetup with the Collab members
that will participate at WikiCon17... Who's going?
I hope to hear from you soon!
Vahid.
