Hi Nice people,

Subject: Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Board Elections
Hi guys,
We are working on having the elections on 31st ,now that we have a
guaranteed venue.
Voting shall be in the way of secret ballot ,5 aspirants who will get
the highest votes shall make up the board , that's according to our
chapter election procedures , i stand corrected !
I shall liaise with my fellow electoral team members Chris &
Cliff on Monday evening ,whether by way of physical meeting up ,Skype
or otherwise see how we can handle the Q & A session & Logisics
/ballot papers blah blah,Thereafter by Wednesday we expect to have set
up an election page where aspiring board members will post their
respective bios,
For now i want to urge our members to spare some time for this
historical event so that we have better turn out ,cz the future of
WMKE chapter is at stake, On behalf of the team i want to say that we
shall be keen to follow the procedures as outlined because we want to
set the right precedence for future elections.

Hi.
Just in case it has not been discussed here yet: Is anyone in Wikimedia
Kenya interested in undertaking the coordination work to make this happen
in Kenya too?

Subject: [Internal-l] Wiki Loves Monuments - will your country participate?
To: "Local Chapters, board and officers coordination (closed subscription)"
<internal-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
we're well on our way getting started with Wiki Loves Monuments 2012! (feel
free to forward)
For those that don't know what Wiki Loves Monuments is all about, please
read this blog post [
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/10/02/165000-photos-submitted-during-second-…]
on the WMF blog and this page about how the concept works [
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Documen…];
here's also a small introduction to the main idea of the contest and what's
awaiting us this year.
*== Wiki Loves Monuments in a nutshell ==*
The photo competition around physical cultural heritage (buildings,
bridges, etc.) is running in September, organized in numerous countries
around the world. The contest is being organized in each country
separately, allowing to play to the local needs and wishes, but is joined
by an umbrella contest for the whole world making it all a bit more
exciting. Last year the contest was organized in 18 countries, and brought
in 165.000 images by 5000 uploaders. More importantly, 4000 of these
uploaders never uploaded anything before!
*== Is your country participating? Helping hands are needed! ==*
For 2012 already 24 countries [
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Partici…]
indicated that they will definitely participate, and 16 more say they
possibly will participate. Please take a look at the list, and see whether
your country is already there. If you would like to help organize this
contest in your country, please join the team that signed up for it (often
through a chapter or a local group) or start your own organizing group if
there is none yet! Interested countries for example include India, United
States, Chile, Sweden and Italy.
*== So, why would you want to organize a WLM in your country? ==*
Well, of course there are the images – it is great to have good images
available of your country. But more importantly perhaps is the amount of
individuals that might participate! Hundreds, maybe thousands of people who
never contributed before can now help out with what they are best at:
making photos. They often find it fun, and might hang around a bit longer
if we receive them well. It also is a good opportunity to get in touch with
local cultural heritage institutions.
Finally, it is a good way to try and forge a local community to organize
events together. It is an existing framework you can use, and although
there are no guarantees, working in an international context like this (the
largest collaboration between chapters and other Wikimedia organizations so
far!) helps a lot to keep people motivated and close to each other. An
international group will be helping interested groups with the basic
infrastructure and other things, and on a national level, you can focus on
the organizing of your own contest, lists and communications.
*== Join the team and get started! ==*
If you want to know more, feel free to leave a message[
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012]
or send us an email. But make sure to get started now if you're interested
- because some parts of the work just require quite some time since
external parties are involved. We would be delighted to help you out in any
way possible to pull off this event.
Best,
Lodewijk
(on behalf of the international coordinating team)

Hi Stephen,
I'm Ivonne Kristiani from Wikimedia Indonesia. I realized that we're
going to meet in Berlin so I thought I'll contact you.
There will be a discussion of Chapter selected board of trustees and
chapters council there and I'd like to know more about it. Has
Wikimedia Kenya come to a decision of who to endorse for WMF Board of
Trustess? Have you discussed amongst yourself about the chapters
council?
Looking forward to hear from you!

Hello,
You all know that we are supposed to not only attend an open source
day<http://eucossa.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48&Itemid=50>at
Egerton University but also give a talk at the event.
The audience shall comprise of students, lecturers and other techies
interested in open source technologies and how these tech can be used to
attain vision 2030 <http://www.vision2030.go.ke/>.
Free knowledge should go the greatest way to attain the vision 2030 and so
the talk shall be a good chance to talk about the Wikimedia Strategies
that have been laid to reach more people in this part of the world.
Some of the things we might share with the attendants:
*A general introduction to the WMF.
*A call for contributors/volunteers with the WMF projects.
* The off line Wikipedia - kiwix reader - and how the folks at Kiwix get to
dump the articles so that they can be read off-line.
* The recent collaborations with Mobile Service Providers to offer
Wikipedia free of data charges.
*Increase reach especially in Africa and the global south where Internet
usage growth is projected to grow by more than 10% by 2015.
*I have been liaising with the organizer and they promised that we shall
have our booth where participants of this
event shall pass-by as we have a word or two plus recruit more contributors
to the Wikimedia.
My two cents of what we expected to preach at the outreach on the coming
weekend.
I have not yet confirmed my personal attendance of this event but I will do
so by Thursday evening.
So far two people have confirmed their attendance of this event.

Hi all,
This weekend's meetup will feature the elections of WMKE's board (at last!). So, there's a draft of the election details here: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections. Kindly have a look at it and redact wherever necessary. The actual text is below.
Sincerely,
Abbas.
===Preamble===Wikimedia Kenya is seeking to appoint five candidates to sit on the Board of Trustees for one year, starting 1 March 2012. The five new members of the Board will help decide the future direction of Wikimedia Kenya. Board membership is unpaid.
===Nominations===Wikimedia Kenya wishes to appoint five excellent board members and believe this can best be achieved by selecting from a large number of varied and skilled candidates. Therefore, we call for nominations by everyone who believes they or someone they know would be suitable. The chapters ask that this call for candidates be distributed as widely as possible through such forums as mailing lists, blogs and social media.
The successful candidates will be committed to the Wikimedia mission and willing and able to engage constructively with the stakeholders of the movement, including the chapter volunteers and Wikip|media contributors that provide it with essential support. The successful candidates will have:
*The ability to provide expertise to the board in its goal of implementing a coherent vision on how Wikimedia projects work;
* Sensitivity to complex issues surrounding the multiplicity of languages, cultures, and jurisdictions;
* Knowledge and understanding of the governance of international non-profit organizations, balancing autonomy and subsidiarity;
* The ability to think strategically and to work both as part of a team and independently;
* A good standard of written and oral English and Swahili (fluency in additional language would be well regarded);
* Sufficient time to devote to the role of board member, and the ability and willingness to travel.
Increasing the geographical diversity of current board membership would be an advantage.
===Rules===This section is a copy and paste from the bylaws'
* Members of the Board shall be elected using the approval voting system, that is, the candidate who receives the greatest number of positive votes are elected.
* The board member shall be elected individually and the board will distribute the functions (of chairperson, treasurer, secretary, etc.) amongst themselves
* All voting for election shall be by secret ballot. In case of a tie, a re-election shall be made.
* Ballot papers shall also be made available to members entitled to vote who attend the AGM in person.
* A member is not entitled to vote at a general meeting unless all dues that are payable by the member to the Chapter have been paid.
* On a poll, votes may be given either personally or by proxy.
* A member can only give his proxy to another member and no voting member may hold more than one additional proxy. [Details about proxy voting are in the bylaws]
===Process===1. The chapter will appoint a moderator and deputy moderator to manage the election. This is intended to be very simple: The moderators are responsible for keeping the wider Wikimedia community updated with the election progress; publicizing the call for nominations; and overseeing the actual elections. The moderators should not be candidates, but they can participate in the process.
2. All candidate statements should be sent to the moderators and/or Wikimedia Kenya wiki.
3. Chapter members will have the opportunity to ask questions to candidates. Candidates are encouraged, but not obliged, to answer all questions put to them. The Q&A will take place by any appropriate means devised by the moderators (e.g. by email, F2F, etc).
4. Voting will take place on [[insert date]].
Again...Msa-Tech community is still proud and thankful to wikipedia reps in Kenya.we look forward to meet you guys again in msa.

Hi ,
So we had a great and eventful outreach in Mombasa over the weekend where
we met with guys from Mombasa IT society.
Mozilla Kenya Community and Wikimedia Kenya delivered interesting talks to
the enthusiastic audience of mostly IT profession and students drawn from
various Universities. It was exciting to see the level of enthusiasm and
zeal from the audience and they were all willing to start the Mombasa Base
for our future engagements.
We managed to distribute the Offline Wikipedia for schools to a couple of
University students ( about 10) who were rely happy and excited about it.
One of the main organisers of the event and who is spearheading efforts to
create the Mombasa IT society offered to use my presentation to
other meet-ups she was going to have and I gladly obliged.
We also had the chance to explore the rich culture and "Museum-ish" nature
of Mombasa ( we all agreed that the whole of Mombasa is a Museum of its own
kind :-) ) and we will be sharing the pics soon. The outreach was great and
we had a great team from both camps and we look forward to such great and
amazing outreach events.
PS:
1. On the 9th to 10th, we have an official invitation to Egerton
Universities and Steve is taking Charge of the same
2. On the week of 14th, we have a date with KU and Alex is taking charge
of that.
Cheers,
