Subject: [Wikimedia Kenya] Confirmation of Heather's Meetup
Hi Guys,
Heather from Ushahidi is on a working tour for the Wikimedia
Foundation and would like to have a meetup with WMKE and other
Wikipedians at the iHUB on the 12th of November from 11am.
Kindly respond to this thread to confirm your attendance and feel free
to suggest any other item you think will be worth discussing or
complaining about (like the speedy deletions in the en:wp ) :-)
Agenda:
1.WMKE activities: Offline Wiki and WTN
2. Editing trends in Wikipedia (especially sw:wp)
3. AOB

Dear colleagues,
I am working on establishing a long-term partnership with an NGO named
ITOCA, dedicated to education training in Africa[1]. One aspect of our
proposed cooperation would be to introduce Wikipedia training to
the curriculum in teacher trainings ITOCA delivers. I have sent them some
training materials to review and think about, based on the training
materials[2][3] that Limoke and I had prepared for the Setswana Wikipedia
Challenge[4].
The operate throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but there is an opportunity to
be involved close to home: they are to deliver training at the Muhimbili
University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania, between Nov 29th and Dec 1st. They would like to try
incorporating Wikipedia training at this opportunity, and both they and I
think it would be best if we can involve a Wikipedian in this first time we
try to incorporate Wikipedia into their training curriculum.
Would one of the WMKE members who have some experience in editing *and* in
training be interested in going? We cover the airfare and accommodation,
and will pay a small "per diem" allowance for meals and local transport.
Thanks in advance,
Asaf

Hope you get this on time, I made a trip to London UK and had my bag stolen
from me with my passport and personal effects therein. The embassy is
willing to help by letting me fly without my passport, I just have to pay
for a ticket and settle Hotel bills. Unfortunately for me, I can't have
access to funds, I've made contact with my bank but they need more time to
come up with a new one. I was thinking of asking you to lend me some quick
funds that I can give back as soon as I get in. I really need to be on the
next available flight.
I can forward you details on how you can get the funds to me.
I await your response
Thanks
Hi all,
I am kindly requesting the participants of WfS to please hand me over any receipts that you may still have with you with respect to this project. David, I need the Mombasa receipts. Branton, I need the taxi receipts. And all the Mombasa folks, I need the bus tickets.
I realize that this is way too late to ask for this, but I have been asked by the Foundation to show them the receipts. I also know that some minor transactions may not have receipts, and I've told the Foundation so.
Sincerely
Abbas.

Re: WIKIAFRICA
Dear Stephen, Alex and Isaac
Hello. As I am sure that Iolanda has told you, WikiAfrica is looking for a Wikipedian-in-Residence to kick start its ambitious programme throughout Africa. I’ve taken on board what many wikipedians have said, and I hope that everything is now clear.
Please find the link to the call for applications here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18yAZxGcBuRO2Zp7vHGHV0q5aM1XaCzqIRSgQWm8…
I would be grateful if you could send this out to your networks to ensure that all wikipedians in Africa do get a chance to apply.
I would also be very interested in working closely with Wikimedia Kenya to achieve our mutual goals. You are doing some very exciting projects and yes, I do think that there are definite synergies. Perhaps we could have a skype chat sometime next week to see where we can help each other out?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest
Isla

Limoke Oscar,
Guys,
The iHub wiki page was deleted for copyright infringement. A new page has
been setup, kindly populate with whatever data you have...

Here is a message from Aaron , Please read and react to it,
I am writing you now because I am considering traveling to Kenya to meet and
interview other Wikipedians in your country.
However, in order to make such a trip worthwhile, I would need to locate as
many Wikipedia users and editors as possible -- ideally at least 15 or more.
(More than that would be better still.) Do you think it would be possible to
find that many Wikipedians in Kenya? And if so, do you have any suggestions
of where I might find them? And how I might contact them?
If you could put me in touch with any Kenyan Wikipedians I would certainly
be grateful. Also, if you have links to any pages that track top
contributors to the Swahili language Wikipedia, that would be most useful. I
am also considering traveling to other African countries, so if there are
other countries that you think I should visit, please suggest them as well.
Thank you,

I also had a chat with him later and here is the message
Aaron: You're most welcome. :-)
So -- WMF will send me, but they want to make sure that,
if they do send me, that
I return
with a good number of interviews
And -- perhaps more importantly
A number of good interviews
10:05 ones that could make good appeals
Which is a challenge
me: We can work that out together
Aaron: Because only a small percentage of all interviews ever result in an
effective appeal
Yes, I agree
Also -- there was a man from Nairobi
in the news about a year ago
10:06 Who built a plane
using information he learned on Wikipedia
It would be most excellent to track him down and meet with him as well
10:07 me: I will share that with them too
We can track him down for sure
Aaron: His name is Gabriel Nderitu
http://physicsworld.com/blog/2010/10/kenyan_physics_graduate_builds.html
10:08 me: ok.
10:09 Aaron: As far as the dates go - It might be in the range of the 11th -
18th
Or possibly a week later.
Please let me get your reaction to this mail and if we can get Wikimedians
from Kenya and those who are not active wikimedians but have been using
Wikipedia in what they do.

Hi Guys,
I had an interview with Heather Ford from Ushahidi on Saturday at the
iHub and she would love to have a session with WMKE members and
Wikipedians when she comes back to Kenya.
As far as the dates go - It might be in the range of the 11th -
> 18th...this would be awesome as the tentative date for the meeting is 12th November at the iHub. Maybe we could synch??
So what are your thoughts and suggestions towards this? Should we have
a meetup with her? I will be setting up an event page where guys can
RSVP but first i need your input on it.
Best,
