Hi all,
As a bit of a surprise, the Wikimedia Summit 2022 announced they are going to have an in-real-life meeting September 9-11, 2022 (2022-09-09 to 09-11). They are only giving us two weeks to designate one person to apply to attend, which is very fast.
I wanted to start this thread to get folks thinking before our meeting tomorrow, to see who might be interested in going. We have rarely had any kind of Wikimedia movement gathering in September of any particular year, so the timing is a bit unusual as it tends to be busy with a number of start-of-school activities in certain places.
The focus will be on movement strategy among other things. I'm putting a link to the announcement here. Feel free to send any questions or discuss via email or come to the meeting tomorrow.

Yup - It is a bit strange, but I also do not know if it was like that pre-pandemic...
@Pharos would you be there via the Movement Charter drafting group?
Who are the other members that might be there anyway? It would be awesome if more people can join.
I am interested in attending.

Yes, I'll be attending in Berlin as a movement charter committee member, so glad if we could appoint someone else as our WREN representative.
Thanks, Richard (User:Pharos)

A few notes:
1. Most of the conversation for this is happening in the Telegram group for Movement Strategy. Organizers are indicating that it is going to be very strict and restricted to one representative per affiliate, and there is not even a guarantee that everyone will be able to go. It will depend on COVID vaccination status, visas, etc. In short, there appear to be no extra spots and unlike earlier Wikimedia Summits
2. This is the first year WREN will be eligible to go to Wikimedia Summit. I'd be interested in going to represent WREN for Movement Strategy and to help with the learning days function, depending on what their plans are. By all accounts, they don't have any firm plans yet and are trying to figure it out. In the past, the Summit has had some dedicated days for tutorials and training, and we could certainly do something around GLAM tools, not only for IRL attendees but remotely too. Either in person or remote, I'm happy to help. It's very confusing about how much they are going to allow outsiders to participate, as they are protective of small group dynamics. But for training and learning, they may be more inclusive.
3. There are Questions & Answers sessions for the team at these times (which are NOT on the wiki)

Andrew, I support you going to represent WREN. If there is training and learning that's more widely and virtually available, I'd be curious to listen in/join.

Good Morning!
I just attended the first zoom session and it seems that there is little program in place except for two distinct tracks of announced Movement Charter and Strategy Implementations. Focus will be on working sessions (insiders) and hearing under-represented (emerging). Some sessions will be in camera on side, others only online. It was not clear what kind of limitations will exist for interactive online participation (maybe just few people per affiliate).
It seemed clear that distinction to Wikimania is that this is a governing focused event and Berlin hosts will struggle especially this year with hosting sizable event. I expect that issues of War, Human Rights, media censorship, prosecution and safety of Wikimedians will be important, especially if war in Ukraine does not stop by then. I would support Andrew or others who step up to work on visibility of WIRs (there was very little) and interests in Wikimedia Strategy Implementations and Movement Charter (@Pharos will make sure we are named in it :-p).
If learning days do not exist this time around, but there are few of us there willing, we can self-organize an afternoon before the Summit for sure. I will likely get to Berlin, stay with friends and hope to attend an official event, but can help organize an off-program as a meet-up.
Is anyone on the list from Berlin or nearby and could casually get to it?

Hi all, regarding the Wikimedia Summit, regardless of who we send, we will need to fill out the application form. So I've started a wiki page so we can collaborate on the answers. I've started it here but please do add and edit! I have a feeling we are already over-performing in being relevant to the strategy process, but why not document it all, not only for them, but for us as well? :) Please edit!

I made a few edits but it would be good to have at least a few other people from other contexts to join in and form a bigger spectrum of contributions and contributors, otherwise we just render like a low capacity 1,1 man show ;-)

How specific do we want to be? I could link to some of my work, like the guide to creating book pages I wrote, or a popular image that I uploaded a higher-resolution version of, but I’m not sure if that’s what we’re going for.

I think individual activities are a bit too specific, but if it is a project or program worth documenting that links to any of the strategy implementations that should be good. Anyway - it is easier to edit and cut down if too specific, then the opposite ;-)

Hi all, good conversation!
Rachel and Z, I think we're on the same page. I think any specific efforts are good to put down in order to highlight or illustrate any of the MCDC themes. Their charge to "Feel free to refer to specific initiatives, recommendations or principles" allows us to be quite specific.
I also see this as a useful exercise for ourselves. It helps us document how our work has fit into these large strategic goals. We can also cut it down if need be, as Z said.
I added some more details in the second section, but please add more!

Hi,
I understand that most WiRs are in GLAM contexts, but it would be great if we could add some parts that go beyond this scope. I am mainly thinking about the fact that a WiR can be in a variety of institutions. Personally, as a newcomer in a different type of institution (university), it has been particularly challenging to navigate these waters as these two parts (WiR and GLAM) often overlap, but the GLAM focus doesn't necessarily answer to all needs.
I haven't changed the Meta page, as I don't really have anything more specific to add, but thought this could be valuable.
Wishing you all a lovely day/night/long weekend. :)
Cheers,
Rute Correia

I made a few edits but it would be good to have at least a few other people from other contexts to join in and form a bigger spectrum of contributions and contributors, otherwise we just render like a low capacity 1,1 man show ;-)

Thanks much Rute, this is absolutely on point and a great addition. I would encourage folks to add more in this area.
We know ourselves that GLAM is much more than those four types of institutions, and includes educational institutions, aquariums, music institutions, arboretums, scientific institutions, et al. But it would be good to note this in the document.
Thanks to Amanda for adding some of this already: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedians_in_Residence_Exchan...
I have been thinking for some time about how we might better generalize GLAM as "public interest knowledge institutions" which would result in the very odd acronym PIKIWIKI :)
Susanna Ånäs has also re-contextualized GLAM as Global Languages Art and Memory, which I also like.

Hi all, today is the deadline for applying for the Wikimedia Summit and thanks for all the support on the mailing list and in the recent meeting.
If there are no objections, I will be proud to represent WREN and submit the application on behalf of this group. Fortunately, I won't be the only one - Richard, Tochi, and others who are involved with WREN will be attending while representing other groups but can also advocate for WREN at the same time.
Rumor has it there may be an expanded opportunity for more than one person from an affiliate to participate in the form of remote/virtual attendance, so we will keep an eye on that.
For the record, here's the final version of the application and thanks to the folks who helped craft it and add to it.
