Hi everyone,
thanks to the work by many national coordinators and Romaine, Wiki Loves
Monuments is launching again! I'd like to give a quick update on the
status.
We have currently some 49 participating countries
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Partic…>.
There are five countries that were planning to participate but are not
ready yet, and may still join the ranks. If you can reach out to them, and
give them a hand - they may appreciate it. These countries are Brazil,
Denmark, Ghana, Mexico and Tanzania. I hope all five will still be able to
join us. If so, that would also mean that we will have a record number of
participating countries!
See https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/ for a more publicly
digestible overview of the landing pages (if you want to link to your
participants).
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi all,
Wiki Loves Monuments is coming up soon! I have been updating the
international website overview, and linked the landing pages that were
listed in the table on Commons. Please check the status of your country
here: https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/
I have listed the following countries as 'likely participating': Finland,
Georgia, Ghana , Greece, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon,
Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria , Palestine, Poland, Portugal , Romania, Spain,
Sweden, Syria, Tanzania.
If your country is listed under 'likely participating', that means that
there was something going on. I left a message for your country coordinator
here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/P…
. Please make sure that it is answered/is taken care of as soon as
possible!
I have considered the following countries as 'maybe participating' (they
will not be listed):
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Sudan, Zambia.
In the coming days, I will keep updating this overview.
Also, please check Romaines email earlier, and update
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Landin…
Thank you!
Best,
Lodewijk
(international coordinating team)
Hi all,
In 2019, Wiki Loves Monuments will be organized for the 10th time. As we
will be celebrating this achievement, we would like to use this opportunity
to reflect on the years behind us and learn how we can improve Wiki Loves
Monuments.
We have created a short survey to ask you to help us learn about the areas
that we can do better within our mission: to freely document and raise
awareness about the monuments, increase contributions to Wikimedia
projects, and bolster local Wikimedia communities.
I would like to invite you all to help us think about this by filling out
this 4 minute survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdG0Dx9CBo613D5XdQ-nCzCe7P_F2k0niS…
We still want to do all of this through an annual, federated, global,
low-barrier photo competition, please keep that in mind as the frame we'd
like to operate under. While your thoughts and recommendations about any
aspect of Wiki Loves Monuments are welcome, we will be paying extra
attention to recommendations that can help the contest become more global:
to help us empower more people from more diverse demographics to join the
project, as organizers, jurors, participants, and beyond.
Thank you for your time in advance.
On behalf of the international team,
Lodewijk
Hi all,
If you are organizing Wiki Loves Monuments in a country without existing
funding structures for Wiki Loves Monuments, you have the possibility to
request a 'Rapid Grant' at the Wikimedia Foundation. This is a low barrier
program that should make it easy to request smaller grants with minimal
effort. You can find more information about the program here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid
The requirements and documentation may seem a little overwhelming, but it's
really not that impossible if you have a clear idea what you need the money
for. Writing a proposal hopefully takes between 30 and 60 minutes, and the
report about the same amount of time. You can use these funds for example
to fund prizes for your national winners, to organize a prize ceremony, to
organize a photo workshop and/or photo walk, etc. This is all optional, but
a great opportunity to get more people involved in your group!
However, there is a deadline here. To maximize the chance that you actually
get your funds before the start of the competition on 1 September, you must
make your application *BEFORE 1 AUGUST*. That still leaves you plenty of
time, but it does mean you should ideally start now. Please note that we
did reach an agreement with the grants team that Wiki Loves Monuments
grants can, by exception, also submit between 16 and 31 July. If you submit
earlier, it can also be approved earlier.
If you need any help writing a grant request, you can ask me or someone
from the grants team for support. If you want to meet at Wikimania to
discuss or draft together, that is totally possible!
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi everyone,
It's that exciting time of the year again, Wiki Loves Monuments is getting
started! I know several of you have already started, but if you haven't:
this is a great time to do so!
The idea behind Wiki Loves Monuments is to invite the general audience in
your country to photograph built heritage and share it with the world
through Wikimedia Commons. We do that through a federated competition,
which means that the national teams are key to our success: they organize
the national competitions. At the end of the process, the national juries
can nominate up to 10 photos to the international jury. The international
jury will then consider those photos once again, and select the
international winners. We will announce the prizes for the international
winners later.
If you are a group of Wikimedians, a chapter or user group that is
interested in participating (again) this year, then please sign up! You can
find a list of countries that has already done so here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Partic…
If you want to know how to organize, please reach out to one of the members
of the international team
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Organi…>.
You can also leave a message on the help desk
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Help_desk> or
send an email to the public mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments>. We do
have a fair amount of documentation
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…>
available, but some of it may be outdated (we appreciate any help in
improving it!).
Like last year, we've also added a tab called 'Organizers' in Wiki Loves
Monuments landing page on Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Organi…
We'd like to encourage you to add your name and those of your team members
with a short description to the list. This information is helpful for those
from outside of the
Movement or the project who end up on that page and want to learn more
about your national competition, it also provides an opportunity for us to
get to know each other via this one page. :) Every year, there are more
than 150 national organizers that make Wiki Loves Monuments happen and it
would be great to know more about all of these amazing people. :)
We will also have a presence at Wikimania this year, and organize a meetup.
Please keep an eye out!
If you like to stay informed, make sure you're a member of our discussion
mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments> (
wikilovesmonuments(a)lists.wikimedia.org ). The most important announcements
are also sent to our announcement mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce>: if you don't
have much capacity for emails, please at least make sure multiple people in
your team are subscribed to that!
If you have any questions, please reach out! We're here to help each other.
Lets have a great competition again :)
Best,
Lodewijk

Dear national organizers,
I'd like to make all national organizers aware of the altered deadlines and
process for rapid grants. Unless exceptions are made for Wiki Loves
Monuments, please note the following:
- *Timeline*: the submission timeline for rapid grants is very limited this
year. You can *only submit before 11 May *(4 days from now) *or between 1
and 15 July*! Do not plan to submit after 1 August, there is no guarantee
that it will be processed in time.
- *Expect delays*: Given the altered timeline, I expect a high number of
applications in the limited timeframe. Please assume delays in review and
approval, although the WMF undoubtly does their best to process requests
timely.
- *Amount*: Rapid grants have a *maximum of USD 2000*, as usual. Starting 1
July, the WMF introduces a *minimum amount of USD 500*. This means that if
you're planning to submit a rapid grant below that amount, you have to
submit it before 11 May, or come up with ways to spend more money.
- *Submit a grant request & more information*: Submitting a grant request
is supposed to be fairly easy through this process. You can find more
information about submitting a grant request here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid
- *Get help?* If you're new to our movement, you may be a little
overwhelmed by some of the process (it's designed to be as easy as possible
- but is optimized for experienced Wikimedians). Please feel free to ask
for help on our public mailing list wikilovesmonuments AT
lists.wikimedia.org or by emailing me or another member of the
international team. Please don't feel shy about reaching out for help!
Below, you'll find the official message by the grant officer Woubzena Jifar
- above I tried to summarize what I see as likely implications for Wiki
Loves Monuments.
Warm regards,
Lodewijk

Hi all,
A little while ago, I shared a draft of our grant request with you. The
final version is now available and submitted:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_interna…
As you can see, we plan to shift our focus this year to some long term
goals, and I hope for your participation in that path. For now, please
consider endorsing this grant request - it is one of the measures that the
grants team uses to indicate community support for projects like this.
I hope to be working with many of you again in the coming months and years!
Warmly,
Lodewijk
(member of the international team)
Dear all,
I am writing to give you a brief summary of the international jury process
so far, now that we have reached just beyond the halfway point of the
international jury process.
As you know, each year we seek to bring together a panel of experts in the
fields of photography and cultural heritage, together with experienced
Wikimedians, in order to create an international jury that is balanced,
neutral and diverse, This year's jury is composed of the following
individuals:
- Benamin Benita - international coordinator of #MuseumWeek and project
manager for Unite4Heritage at UNESCO
- Wolter Braamhorst - Europa Nostra & Editor of Heritage in Action
magazine
- Katie Chan - Wikimedia UK
- David Iliff - experienced Wikimedian & photographer
- Katherine Maher - Executive Director, Wikimedia Foundation
- Daniel Schwen - experienced Wikimedian & photographer
- Manit Sriwanichpoom - photographer
- Tala Vahabzadeh - UNESCO Tehran & professional photographer
We are truly thrilled and honoured to have such a broad range of talent and
experience on board as jurors, and their input has been incredibly valuable
so far in the jury process.
The international jury process is taking place over three stages, In the
first stage, the initial pool of 489 images was brought down to a pool of
the final 65 photos. The second stage of voting is currently underway, and
the jurors are in the process of further narrowing down this selection in
advance of the final stage of voting, which will open over the next few
days. In the final stage of voting, the jurors will be establishing the
final ranking and determining the overall winner. We expect the results to
be announced in the first two weeks of December, however I will be in touch
with you once again with an update over the next weeks.
Thank you once again for all your hard work in organising your local
competitions and in soliciting participation in your own countries - the
jurors have had a fantastic time looking through the stunning images that
have been submitted around the world!
Best regards,
Neville

Hi all,
Thank you all for your great help in submitting your country's nominations
in time and in the format requested, we really appreciate your cooperation
on this, as it allows us to get our jury process off to a smooth start.
Unfortunately, there are still a handful of national competitions who have
not yet formally submitted their nominations. These are the following:
Brazil; Saudi Arabia; Tunisia. We may be able to process these if we
receive their nominations in the next hours (*by midday UTC tomorrow, 7
November*), however we will regretfully have to exclude nominations that do
not reach us by that deadline. For this reason, if you are involved in any
of these campaigns (or know anyone who is), we would greatly appreciate it
if you could urgently reach out to them and inform them of this. May I also
remind you to follow the submission guidelines set out in an earlier email
(here:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikilovesmonuments/2017-October/00872…).
Please feel free to contact me off-list with any questions or
clarifications you may have about this.
We are currently setting up the jury process, importing the nominations
that you have submitted into the jury tool. The jury process itself is
explained in more detail here (http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/jury - the
list of jurors will be updated in the coming hours). We plan to go through
this process at a steady and thorough pace, ensuring that we finish the
process by the end of November. We expect to announce the winners
officially in the first two weeks of December, depending on any challenges
we come across regarding the jury report and checks and balances for
particular images.
Thank you once again for all your help and we look forward to contacting
you again with news about the final winners!
Best regards,
Neville
