Hello all,
As many of you might have already noticed from your Wikimedia Commons talk
pages, the WLM International Team has launched this year's participants
survey. The survey has been sent as a mass message to all the uploaders of
WLM. Through the survey we would like to learn who you are, your experience
with various aspects of Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, what worked well, and
what can be improved for the next year. If you have participated in WLM
2020, you can participate in the survey at
https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9plOyw6gnzNfOWF and also please
do pass it onto your community groups and also any social media channels
you have.
Apart from that, I would like to point out two things;
1. While sending the mass message, I didn't notice the title said 2019,
as I copied last year's template - and it was sent! So your talk page
sections might be saying 2019 - but the content is about 2020 only. It is
my mistake, sorry for the confusion. I am hoping to fix it with the help of
AWB or a bot, though not very sure.
2. Also, since this year, countries have organized their national
competitions, between September and November - the survey had only been
sent to uploaders till the end of October (approximately). So for the
countries that organized the competition in November, the survey will be
distributed for their participants separately in early December. So if you
are wondering that you haven't received a message, it is because of this
reason.
In less than a week since the launch, there are about 900 responses! Please
share it across to increase the participation.
Also, we have got the translations done in a few major languages, but we
can also include others, even now and integrate with the form. Anyway, they
will be helpful for next year as well. So if you are interested in
translating the survey to your language, please let me know.
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Best,
Krishna Chaitanya
*on behalf of the international team*
PS: Organizer's survey will be out soon :)
Hi all,
Like every year, we need to put together a good jury for Wiki Loves
Monuments 2020. It is a complicated and delicate process to come to a
balanced jury, and I would like to outline the criteria here, and to ask
for your input. I have agreed to take the lead on this process - but would
definitely welcome your input, and help.
As in the past years, I think it is important to aim once again for a jury
that as a whole is neutral and balanced in many ways. This means ideally:
* A mix of photography experts, heritage experts and Wikimedia experts
(aiming at a total size of 7-9)
* Geographically balanced so that no two jury members come from the same
country.
* Balance in many other ways imaginable (while at the same time, one can
never assure a balance in all aspects)
* The international jury members do not serve on a national jury for WLM
At the same time, there are some practical considerations:
* Jury members must be able to write and read English
* They must have the time to commit to judge 200-500 photos in three rounds
over a period of 3 weeks in January
* While jury members can participate in a local competition, their photos
cannot participate in the international finale
* Jury members should not participate in any national jury for
2020(previous years is OK)
* It would be helpful if the juror would be willing to share their real
name for the jury report.
* Jury work is in a volunteer capacity.
Do you know someone who would make a good juror, please contact me
privately with the suggestion. At least let me know who the juror is, how I
could contact him/her and why they would make a good jury member (and
whether you have reason to believe they would accept the nomination, if
asked).
I will do my best to put together once again a qualified and diverse jury,
with your help!
Thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Erina Mukuta

Hi everyone,
As a kind reminder, I would like to point to the timeline this year
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020/Organi…>:
every country can follow the submission schedule of the countries that run
in November. That means you can submit until late December (don't get
surprised by the holidays though!). After that, we will have to enforce the
deadline more strictly this year, but hopefully this offers some respite.
I'm just sending this as a kind reminder, as I saw some concerned messages
from national organizers. Please ensure that your jury coordinators are
aware of this submission timeline.
Thank you,
Lodewijk
Hello everyone,
The long pending reports of Wiki Loves Monuments 2019's Participant and
Organizer surveys have now been published on Wikimedia Commons. You may
access them at the following links;
- Participant Survey:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_20…
- National/regional organizers can request survey results for their
country (if there were at least 10 responses). Additionally, in
the survey,
we asked if people would like to help in organizing, as lack of human
resources is one of the most commonly reported challenges by national
organizers. To this, about 60% of the survey respondents said yes; if you
need this data, you may also seek that. You can place a request at
https://forms.gle/PSKxCS9nV2yFdXXK8. *If you have already placed a
request, the same will be fulfilled within the next couple of days.*
- Organizer Survey:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_20…
- It would be a good resource for organizers who are planning to
organize the contest to go through this report, and learn what other
organizers had reported as advice, new ideas, and challenges.
Sorry for enormous delay caused in conducting these surveys, and then
publishing the reports. It was because it is the first time we did such an
extensive survey, and response was overwhelming. It will be much better and
faster for the upcoming iteration.
Stay safe, happy reading!
Krishna C V.
Hi everyone,
I would like to thank everyone who weighed in on what Wiki Loves Monuments
should look like in 2020. It will be a special year - originally we thought
it would be special, because it's the 10th international edition. It turns
out, that it will also be an especially challenging year to organize a
photo competition.
Countries around the world are dealing with the consequences of this
ravaging pandemic, and many national organizers have already been wondering
what approach to take this year. We organized office hours about this a few
weeks ago, and as international team, we took the time to digest this. I
wanted to take this email to give hopefully a bit more clarity about how we
will organize Wiki Loves Monuments this year.
*Responsibility for national organizers*: First of all, I would like to
emphasize that the international team coordinates the national
competitions: we are not qualified to tell you exactly how to organize your
competition. The situation is rapidly evolving, and different in each
country. National teams are best placed to decide whether and how to
organize a competition in your country. We will try to help set an
international framework, and assist in the exchange of best practices. We
expect that national organizers will *follow the guidance and regulations
set by their national governments and health authorities*. Note that
funding and WMF affiliate recognition may come with additional
guidance/requirements.
*Extended timeline*: National organizers have the opportunity to choose a
different range of dates for their national competition. You can pick any
range of 30 or 31 days within the period September-November 2020 as your
upload dates. That means that one country does not have to use the same
upload dates as another. This hopefully allows more flexibility for rapid
changes in a national situation, but also for national organizers that
currently don't have the capacity to organize a competition due to personal
circumstances, to push the competition a little later in the year. However,
uploads after November 30 will not be accepted. The jury deadline will be
January 2, 2021 for all countries. A simple timeline has been published on
Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020/Organi…>,
and will be updated there. Other documentation may be outdated - feel free
to update.
*Exchange of best practices*: There will be plenty of national challenges
this year. I created an exchange page to share some best practices
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020/Organi…>
(but you can also keep using our mailing list). How to organize a
competition when there are government restrictions? How do you make sure
that not too many people show up? What kind of in-person events may be
responsible, if permitted by local government? How to organize online
upload workshops? This may be especially a good place to exchange some good
blog posts and communications that inform participants on how to behave. I
put up a few empty headers, and would love it if people help flesh out tips
based on their experiences.
*Special awards in 2020*: We already scheduled special awards in 2020
before the crisis became obvious. The international team is planning to
organize two special regional awards (to be finalized in August) for
underrepresented regions and possibly one award for some 'innovation
category' (such as drones or 3D representation). Finally, we're considering
a special award for UNESCO world heritage outside of participating
countries (this would cover an upload period in November 2020). Thoughts
about this are welcome on the main talk page on Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020>.
Please don't forget to register your interest to participate here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020/Partic…
I'm sure that this won't be the last email on this topic, but invite you to
ask questions if you have any. You can do that on the Wiki Loves Monuments
mailing list, or on the main talk page.
On behalf of the international team,
Lodewijk

I'm forwarding this announcement by Krishna to this list; it may be
relevant to all organizers. The office hours will serve as an opportunity
to discuss directions for the next year. Every potential national organizer
is invited. I hope to see many of you there.

Hello all,
Hope this email finds you all in the best of your health, and you are
staying safe amid the ongoing crisis.
In one of the recent threads on this mailing list, community members
expressed their doubts regarding Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, considering the
COVID-19 pandemic. It was glad that to see various suggestions coming up
regarding how to go about it. To facilitate the same, the International
Team will be conducting two office hour sessions on 6 & 7 June 2020, in
various time slots, making for people across the to take part and share
their ideas. During these sessions, we will start off with WLM 2019
surveys, how do we see Wiki Loves Monuments as an international competition
in 2020, and about organising Wiki Loves Monuments as national competition
- various potential challenges, opportunities, and ways of doing it. Inputs
shared during these sessions will be crucial in making a decision regarding
organising WLM 2020.
Details of the sessions:
- 6 June 2020 (Saturday) - 5 pm to 7 pm UTC (10 am - 12 pm PDT) at
https://meet.google.com/vpq-rvzt-jpc
- 7 June 2020 (Sunday) - 6:30 am to 8:30 am UTC at
https://meet.google.com/npz-jbih-hdb
Agenda for the both the sessions is the same, two different sessions are
being conducted to enable people from various parts of the world to attend
according to their convenience.
Regards,
Krishna Chaitanya
