Hello everyone,
The Wiki Loves Monuments International Team would like to invite you to an
office hour on May 26 @ 3:00 pm UTC. This hour is open to anyone interested
in Wiki Loves Monuments, including past and future organizers, and
participants.
For this month, the primary topic will be to discuss and collect feedback
on the newcomer's guide to WLM. With the surveys, the International Team
has been receiving feedback that there is not a place for first-time
participants (who are also new to Wikimedia) to read about participating in
the competition. Last month we got on board a designer to work with us to
design a friendly guide for first-time participants. Here is the first
draft of the wireframe:
https://xd.adobe.com/view/03bd18ac-99e5-420f-976b-ad2fe5b543d9-56ee/. We
will use this office hour to collect feedback from community members and
national organizers regarding a strategy to implement this for various
national competitions. You can also share your specific feedback related to
the design directly on the link above.
The meeting details are as follows:
- July 23 @ 3:00 pm UTC (https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1627052415)

*Full announcement (also available at https://w.wiki/3a5s
<https://w.wiki/3a5s>)*
It's that time of year again when we get started for Wiki Loves Monuments.
By 2020, we have completed ten iterations of the international edition.
Thanks to all other organizers, participants, sponsors and partners, who
collectively achieved this feat. With the onset of a global pandemic, last
year has been particularly challenging for many organizers to keep the
photo competition running. Nevertheless, we received 200,000+ images.
Though it is great to see several countries recovering to normal life after
a long period of lockdowns and restrictions, many countries aren't quite
there yet. Since February this year, we have been organizing office hours
to have inputs from community members regarding various aspects related to
the competition, which also includes the timeline. The framework for 2021
is based on all consolidated feedback from these conversations and surveys
we did for 2020 (sorry for the delay in publishing those reports!)
- *Responsibility for national organizers:* We would like to emphasize
that the international team coordinates the national competitions: we are
not qualified to tell you exactly how to organize your competition.
National teams are best placed to decide whether and how to organize a
competition in your country. We will try to help set an international
framework, and assist in the exchange of best practices. We expect that
national organizers will follow the guidelines and regulations set by their
national governments and health authorities. Note that funding and WMF
affiliate recognition may come with additional guidance/requirements.
- *Transparency of national juries:* The international team has been
receiving feedback over the last couple of years for better
transparency of
national juries, to avoid potential conflict of interest organizers may
have with jurors. So from this year on, national organizers
should publish
their information (username or name) of jurors and rounds
organized on this
page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Juries>
.
- *Extended timeline:* Many organizers welcomed the extended timeline
last year. Though we will be continuing that this year, but not exactly as
we did last year. National organizers have the opportunity to choose a
different range of dates for their national competition. You can pick any
range of 30 or 31 days within the period of September-October 2021 as your
upload dates. That means that one country does not have to use the same
upload dates as another. This will allow flexibility according to the
situation in various countries.
- The last date for all uploads is 31 October 2021, and any uploads
beyond that date will be ineligible for consideration.
- The jury deadline will be December 5, 2021, for all countries.
- *Exchange of knowledge:* National organizers innovate in many ways
to make their competitions successful. While some try out new social media
campaigns, some organize an interesting photo walk, and others use Wikidata
to make the upload process easy. It would be helpful for other organizers
to learn from these practices. Here is a page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Knowle…>
on Wikimedia Commons where you can share your strategies and let the
community know what worked, what didn’t and any suggestions for others
interested in the idea.
- *Special awards in 2021:* Though the international team tried to
organize special awards last year, we couldn’t make it work. We have a
budget this year as well to award special prizes. We would like community
members to suggest ideas for these special prizes. For example,
underrepresented regions, the most numbers of unique monuments covered etc.
Please send in your ideas via email or by posting on the Commons talk page
by July 15.
Lastly, and most importantly, if you are interested in organizing the
competition for your country/region, please sign up at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Partic…
.
If you need any support with organizing, please reach out to one of
the international
team members
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Organi…>,
or you can also post to the mailing list, or on the help desk
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021>
on Wikimedia Commons.

Krishna Chaitanya,

Hello everyone,
The Wiki Loves Monuments International Team would like to invite you to an
office hour on 16 April @ 3 pm UTC. This hour is open to anyone interested
in Wiki Loves Monuments, including past and future national organizers. We
are starting to experiment with hosting an office hour every month,
starting this month. The idea is to create a space to have more
conversations about the campaign with national organizers and have their
inputs. We will have a topic to discuss each month, which will be decided
from time to time. We can also talk about other related stuff if we have
time left.
For this month, we would like to discuss deciding the timeline for 2021's
competition. Due to the pandemic, last year, organizers had the option to
choose any 30 days between September and November, as opposed just
September. Though many organizers welcomed this move and it helped many
countries participating for the first time to organize the competition, it
has some logistical challenges and disadvantages. As the pandemic hasn't
receded yet, we anticipate national organizers will have similar challenges
as last year. As deciding the timeline is the one of the first steps to
start planning, we would like to have inputs on this. We will start off the
conversation based on the inputs we received regarding this from the
surveys we conducted last year.
The meeting details are as follows:
- April 16 @ 3 pm UTC (https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1618585256)

Hello all,
I am writing this email to let you know that the international team will be
applying for a project grant to WMF in the upcoming round, to provide
support for 2021's competition.
The draft of the grant proposal is at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_interna…
.
While most of the plan and the content is similar to that of previous
years, there are few changes/additions to the goals in general that we have
put up. These include:
- Stabilizing the team and getting the competition going: Some
long-standing members of the team are going to step back from the core
group this year, which will require significant transitions internally. Our
goal is to make sure the international team has sufficient human resources
to run the competition successfully this year. (We are also looking for
volunteers to join the team :))
- Exploring future changes:
- Exploring rest of the world competition: The idea is to explore the
possibility of organizing a competition for the rest of the
world i.e. for
countries not having a national competition. This has come up
several times
in the past, we explored the idea a bit last year, but it didn't
materialise. For this year, we would like to explore the possibility and
model of such a competition in detail, and hopefully get in
running in 2022.
- Research on landing page design: Landing pages are a crucial part
of engaging participants. A good landing page can help to turn in more
visitors to participants. There is always a scope of improvement in this
area. We are planning on closely working with relevant WMF teams to
research and improve the design of a generic landing page, which can be
used by national competitions. This won't necessarily be ready
by the start
of 2021's competition, but by the end of the grand period i.e. mid-2022.
- Developing step-by-step guide for participants: Though there are a
lot of pages containing instructions for participants, there is no single
guide to which the participants can refer. We are envisioning to have a
graphical 1/2-pager document, with enough information for a complete
outsider to Wikimedia, to participate. This can be translated
and localised
by national competitions.
- Follow-up with the participants: The idea is to follow-up with
participants, especially those who joined Wikimedia through the
competition, at regular intervals after the competition is over. This
includes a simple message on talk pages of the participants on what they
can possibly do after the competition is over. This may improve retention.
The deadline to finalise the proposal is 10 Feb. Please share your
thoughts/feedback by 7th, so that it will give us enough time to make
changes. We will also discuss these points during the upcoming office hours
on Sunday.

Krishna Chaitanya,

Hi everyone!
As you may be aware, the deadline to submit national nominees to the
international process is by the end of December. In previous years, this
all happened via email.
In order to minimize the possibility for mistakes and improve reliability
of this process, I would like to ask you to fill a form with your nominees.
This will generate an email to both a jury member, and an organizer. Both
will be asked to confirm the correctness of this overview by responding to
that email.
The link will be sent to the organizers ON REQUEST. Please have the main
organizer email Erina (me) for this.
Thank you again for this effort! I'm looking forward to a lot of exciting
submissions this year.
