Ciell - on behalf of the WLM International Team
Hi all,
As many of you know, there are several tools overseen by the WLM
international team for Wiki Loves -like contests. While I myself stepped
down from the team, I wanted to send a (belated) quick reminder of some
tools that are available.
Note that these are not all the tools available around WLM, only the ones
that I (co-)maintain(ed) :)
== Statistics tools ==
See <https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2023>. Data is refreshed
every 15 minutes.
If you want to know more about the tool, please see <
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tool:Wikiloves>
The tool, beyond the “country race”, provides each competition with:
* A day-to-day table of image uploads and joiners (uploader who uploaded
their first image on that day). <
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2023/Ireland>
* A sorted table of all uploaders, their upload count (as part of the
competition) and file usage, and their registration date <
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2023/Ireland/users>
These two views may be helpful to gauge the health of your competition
If you notice any issue with the tool (bug, data missing, etc.), please
file a task on Phabricator: <
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?projects=tool…>.
== ErfgoedBot and Monuments database ==
Some might have noticed it − ErfgoedBot had been broken since April
(following a Toolforge database upgrade). We managed to get back and
running a week ago.
For more information on the services provided by ErfgoedBot
(categorization, maintenance reports, etc.), please see the documentation
on Commons:
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database>
One of the most relevant task is the categorization (described at <
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Categorization>)
− as far as I can see based on the bot edits, it seems to be working fine.
Unfortunately, the bot’s work is slowed down by going over and over
thousands of images it can't figure out how to categorize.
→ I might add more countries to the skiplist to not penalize the other
countries
→ it would be great if humans could have a look at the images left in
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Categorizatio…
== Notification to uploaders without email enabled ==
Every three minutes, ErfgoedBot retrieves the list of users who uploaded,
in the last few minutes, pictures marked as participating to WLM. If an
uploader has not enabled e-mail, the bot leaves a message on their talk
page explaining that it is necessary to win a prize (unless it has already
notified that user).
You can help translating the message in more languages at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:WLM-enable-email/i18nhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:WLM-enable-email/heading/i18n
We hope that this will help to avoid situations of winning pictures with no
email enabled, only detected much later when the uploader is not around
anymore.
Hope this all helps,
--

Hello everyone!
It is 31 August, the last day before the contest in most countries! In
about 10 hours from now the first country arrives in September and there
Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 will start!
Before it can start, you may need to do something. I can only activate a
banner in your area if there is a landing page I can link to. If there is
no landing page, the contest can't start. Many landing pages are still
missing on:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2023/Landin…
Please check the page if yours is there!
If your page is not in English, please also have somewhere a page (in
short) where foreign participants can read how to upload/rules/etc. This
can for example be a page at .../English. Link this page from your landing
page + link it in the table on the page of all the Landing pages.
For some languages I miss a translation "Learn more". If this text is not
logic in your language, use then instead a translation of "More
information". This text is missing for the languages:
Afrikaans (af), Azerbaijani (az), Central Bikol (bcl), Crimean Tatar (crh),
Irish (ga), Scottish Gaelic (gd), Croatian (hr), Maithili (mai), Malagasy
(mg), Mirandese (mwl), Min Nan Chinese (nan), Nepali (ne), Northern Sotho
(nso), Punjabi (pa), Northern Sami (se), Albanian (sq), Swahili (sw), Tamil
(ta), Tswana (tn), Tatar (tt), Urdu (ur), Yiddish (yi), Yoruba (yo)
Let me know what the translation would be if you speak any of these
languages.
If you notice any issue with the banner or upload wizard, please let me
know as soon as possible!
Have fun everyone with Wiki Loves Monuments! :-)
Greetings,
Romaine
Dear esteemed WLM organizers and participants,
We're happy to announce that the WLM 2023 landing page is ready:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2023/Organi…
We anticipate the amazing impressions captured with your camera and
invite you to visit the WLM 2023 pages at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2023 for
further information on how to participate in and/or organize the WLM
Campaign in your region.
Looking forward to your submissions from 1st September - 31st October
2023 to expand the collection of more than 3,000,000 pictures
documenting monuments and heritage from all over the world in the last
twelve iterations of Wiki Loves Monuments.
Kind regards,
Manfred / the team of Wiki Loves Monuments international
Hi organizers,
it looks like the deadline for WMF rapid grants this edition is July 1.
This is the program that is most relevant to most of you, and the deadline
is a little more than a week from now!
In case you were thinking to use the September 1 deadline: this deadline
will be too late to organize (it comes with an earliest project start of
October 28).
If you are interested and need help with applying, please contact the WMF
liaison listed here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid#Contact_us> for your
region. They are generally helpful. The WLM international team is usually
happy to provide some feedback on your proposal, and you can also send it
to the international mailing list if you're looking for help from peer
organizers in other countries.
Best,
Lodewijk
Dear organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 all around the world,
The team of WLM international would like to learn how the last edition
of WLM worked for you, what worked well or even excellent, or where you
think things can be improved. We prepared a survey to collect your
answers and ideas:
All questions are optional. Filling in the answers may take about 10 or
15 minutes (also depending on how much you would like to share).
Please note that no information that could be used to identify
participants of the survey will be made public, see also the privacy
statement here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2022/Survey…
Thank you for taking the time!
Kind regards,
Manfred on behalf of the team of Wiki Loves Monuments international
Hi all
I was checking the banner for Wiki Loves Monuments in various languages,
and I noticed I miss some translations. The main banner text tells that
there is a photo contest, and below this text line there is a short text.
And various translations of this text are missing. In English this text is
"Learn more", but some other languages have the text "More information" as
that sounds better in those languages.
The "Learn more"/"More information" text for various languages is missing.
Please let met know how you would translate "Learn more" or "More
information" in one or more of these languages below (which is logic in
your language).
You can add the translation on this page:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2022/Centra…
Afrikaans (af)
Asturian (ast)
Azerbaijani (az)
Central Bikol (bcl)
Crimean Tatar (crh)
Irish (ga)
Scottish Gaelic (gd)
Croatian (hr)
Maithili (mai)
Malagasy (mg)
Mirandese (mwl)
Min Nan Chinese (nan)
Nepali (ne)
Northern Sotho (nso)
Punjabi (pa)
Northern Sami (se)
Albanian (sq)
Swahili (sw)
Tamil (ta)
Tswana (tn)
Tatar (tt)
Urdu (ur)
Yiddish (yi)
Yoruba (yo)
Thanks!
For now I only need a translation for the languages listed above. For other
languages listed in the table on
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2022/Centra…
I have the small text already.
(If you speak a language that is not in the list on the page at all, please
add the main banner text and the short text. Still various large languages
are missing, for example Indonesian.)
Romaine
Hi all,
(summary: join us
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2022/Office…>
for a workshop on Saturday 1 October at 2pm UTC / 10am EDT)
After some discussions with various people we thought it might be useful to
have a discussion/office hour about landing pages and making the design of
them effective. This is a bit late in the game for most of you, but some
campaigns will only run in October, so it may be better late than not at
all. I would like to repeat this next year in June/July (maybe at
Wikimania?).
Over the past years, we have developed some documentation on how to create
a good landing page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…>
and
we have shared a template
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…>
that the international team believes could be a useful starting point for
many competitions that is also more mobile friendly (here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…>
is an older version).
Last year I have done a research project to analyze the performance of our
banner workflow (some results should be shared in the coming weeks) and
while there are no formal findings for this, I did note that the countries
with lowest conversion (percentage of user IDs that click on the banner
that continue to the upload page) seemed to be somewhat correlated with
design elements of the pages (they looked more like Wikipedia articles
and/or were missing a clear call to action).
What I thought might be useful is to organize an explicit opportunity for
organizers from different campaigns to show their landing page/workflow,
and get some feedback from other organizers. We have all gone through the
challenges of setting up these processes, and we can keep improving them.
The workshop will be on Google Meet at 1 October, 14:00 UTC (10:00 EDT,
16:00 CEST). Please sign up here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2022/Office…>
so
that we can prepare a bit. Link will be shared there too.
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi everyone,
Last year's WLM winner Donatas Dabravolskas won the competition with a
photograph of the *Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading* in Rio de Janeiro,
Brasil.
Let me share with you a blog post on the story of Wiki Loves Monuments in
Brasil
<https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/the-wiki-loves-monuments-story-of-brazil…>,
and a video interview (with English subtitles) with the winner of WLM 2021!
Please enjoy, and feel inspired. 🙂
Best,
Ciell
