Hi,
The latest technical newsletter is now available at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2019/37%3E. Below is the English version.
You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you can add it to the next newsletter at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next%3E.
More information on how to contribute is available at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute%3E. You can also contact me directly.
As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

Latest *tech news https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News* from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2019/37 are available.
*Changes later this week*
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikidata for up to 30 minutes on 10 September at 05:00 (UTC) https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190910T05. [1] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T230788 - When you log in, the software checks your password to see if it follows the Password policy https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Password_policy. From this week, it will also complain if you are a "privileged user" and your password is too short. If your password is not strong enough, please consider to change your password https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset for a stronger password https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Password_strength. [2] https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/operations/mediawiki-config/+/534707 - [image: Recurrent item] The new version https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.34/wmf.22 of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 September. It will be on all wikis from 12 September (calendar https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.34/Roadmap).
*Meetings*
- [image: Recurrent item] [image: Advanced item] You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 11 September at 15:00 (UTC) https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190911T15. See how to join https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting.
*Future changes*
- [image: Advanced item] Soon, the AbuseFilter will recognize new syntax errors. Specifically, it will recognize errors about empty operands. You can see a list of examples in phab:T156096 https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T156096. Any active filter with such an error will stop working; hence, please take a look at the list of affected filters https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T156096#5464310, and fix the ones that you can fix. Note that there is also an ongoing RFC on meta-wiki https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment/Creating_abusefilter-manager_global_group about the creation of a new abusefilter-manager global group.

There have been software errors in the delivery of this week's Tech News. MassMessage delivered 3 separate copies to some destinations, and 0 copies to other destinations. I've filed a task for the devs to investigate, at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T232379
There's not anything I can feasibly do en-masse to fix either of these problems, and many of the duplicates have already been individually fixed, so I offer my apologies on behalf of the software (as flawed as us humans!), and request that you please remove 2 of the duplicates where you find them, and copy the newsletter to pages where it is missing but should've been delivered.
We will also add a note about this problem into next week's Tech News.
Much thanks, Quiddity (WMF)
