You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you can add it to the next newsletter at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next%3E.
More information on how to contribute is available at < https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute%3E. You can also contact me directly.
As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

Latest *tech news https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News* from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2019/23 are available.
*Recent changes*
- You can now write all special letters in all African Wikipedia languages. This works in the desktop version. [1] https://aharoni.wordpress.com/2019/05/25/happy-africa-day-keyboards-for-all-african-wikipedia-languages/ - There is now a field called depicts https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Depicts on Commons. This is a way to show what is in a picture with the help of Wikidata. It is still in development. [2] https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Adding_qualifiers_to_Depicts - Some tools on Toolforge may break on or after 3 June because of database changes. Maintainers should update their tools to use the new schema. [3] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T223406[4] https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/cloud-announce/2019-May/000172.html
*Problems*
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikimedia Commons for 30 minutes on 19 June at 05:00 (UTC) https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190619T05. This is to fix a hardware problem. [5] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T224516
*Changes later this week*
- Some wikis have one tab for the visual editor and one tab for a wikitext editor. Others wikis just have one tab. If your wiki has two tabs, clicking a link to create a new page has always opened a wikitext editor. It will now open the editor you used the last time you edited. [6] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T223793 - [image: Recurrent item] The new version https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.34/wmf.8 of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 June. It will be on all wikis from 6 June ( calendar https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.34/Roadmap).
*Meetings*
- [image: Recurrent item] [image: Advanced item] You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 5 June at 15:00 (UTC) https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190605T15. See how to join https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting.
