Latest *tech news https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News* from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2019/05 are available.
*Recent changes*
- The Wikimedia servers use HHVM https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:HHVM to run the PHP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:PHP code. They are going to use PHP7 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Technology/Annual_Plans/FY2019/TEC4:_PHP7_Migration/Goals and stop using HHVM. You can test PHP7 with a new beta feature https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Beta_Features/PHP7. That way you can help find and report https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Beta_Features/PHP7 problems.
*Problems*
- When someone moves a page to a name that already exists that page that had the name the article is moved to is deleted. For a couple of months this didn't always work. Some users saw an error message instead. This has now been fixed. [1] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T210739
*Changes later this week*
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
*Meetings*
- [image: Recurrent item] [image: Advanced item] You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 January at 16:00 (UTC) https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190130T16. See how to join https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting.
