A recent change to MediaWiki software seems to have broken templates
everywhere. The syntax
{}
used to work on a template to generate a link to a page in the same
namespace, typically used on templates related to move (rename) discussions.
However this has stopped working as of last month, causing lots of
ABC to be displayed in plain-text everywhere when this syntax is
used in the main namespace.
We figured for now at yue.wp that
{}
(notice the deletion of the colon at the beginning) works and would like to
know if this is the recommended solution. This doesn't seem to have been
picked up by Linter.

Subject: Turn mapframe for English Wikipedia? We’re ready if you are
To: wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Cc: Deborah Tankersley <dtankersley(a)wikimedia.org>
In October 2017, English Wikipedia community members approved an RfC
requesting implementation of mapframe
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_15…>
[1]—a feature that enables contributors to easily display dynamic maps on
article pages. At the time, there was some question about whether
technical support for the maps service would be available long term, and
the Foundation asked that the community stand by. I’m writing now to say
that those questions have been answered, and a small team will be assigned
for routine maps maintenance.
So, unless we hear from the English Wikipedia community that the consensus
on adding mapframe has changed since last year’s RfC, we plan to move
forward in April 2018. You can read more about this plan and leave comments
on Village Pump [2]. If you foresee any issues, let us hear from you.
Otherwise,
happy mapping!

Hello,
If you’re regularly using Lua modules, creating or improving some of them,
we need your feedback!
The Wikidata development team would like to provide more Lua functions, in
order to improve the experience of people who write Lua scripts to reuse
Wikidata's data on the Wikimedia projects. Our goals are to help
harmonizing the existing modules across the Wikimedia projects, to make
coding in Lua easier for the communities, and to improve the performance of
the modules.
We would like to know more about your habits, your needs, and what could
help you. We have a few questions for you on this page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:New_convenience_functions_for_Lua>.
Note that if you don’t feel comfortable with writing in English, you can
answer in your preferred language.
Feel free to ping or share this message with any editors that could be
interested!
Thanks a lot for your help,

Hello everyone,
On behalf of the Parsing Team @ the WMF, I am announcing our plans to
replace Tidy with Remex on the next set of wikis.
On April 4th, we plan to turn off Tidy on all wikiquotes (except
frwikiquote) [1] and wikimedia wikis [2]. 23 wikis will have Tidy replaced.
On April 11th, we plan to turn off Tidy on all wikis with < 50 entries
in all high priority linter categories [3]. About 60 wikis will have
Tidy replaced.
Please follow T175706 [4] to monitor progress of Tidy replacement.
Currently about 600 wikis have had Tidy replaced and we have another 300
wikis to go. We plan to finish this transition from Tidy to RemexHtml by
end of June 2018.
If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a comment on the
associated phabricator tickets or leave a message on mw.org [5].
Thanks,
Subbu.

*Dear sir, madamWikimedia Nederland is organizing her very first Women Tech
Storm. This event is a small female-only hackathon. It is also open for
non-binary people. It will be held in The Hague from 10-12 May 2018.It will
be an extended weekend filled with hacking together with other interested
developers. The Hackathon has two targeted groups. One group exists of
female and non-binary developers with some experience programming outside
Wikimedia and who would like to learn Wikimedia coding. The other group
consists of women and non-binary people who are already acquainted with
Wikimedia projects and are interested in learning the coding side of the
projects. You can learn how to make a query with SPARQL or learn to master
Python. The Women Tech Storm - part I will be followed by Part II. This
event will be in October/November and is open for all genders.Participation
is free of charge and it includes entrance, meals and hotel: we ask of
people participating to join us in Part II.Please see the registration form

Greetings all,
Starting on April 9th we'll migrate the servers running the Mediawiki
application servers to a new release of the ICU Unicode library
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Components_for_Unicode)
(from version 52 to 57). This unblocks some future work on upgrading
the servers to a new Operating System release and will also allow the
use of improved internationalisation in the future (as wikis will then
be able to use features introduced by the new ICU release such as new
collation definitions, and allows us to use a more recent version of
Unicode in MediaWiki).
This migration will cause some unavoidable temporary user-visible
impact: The sorting of some category pages will be distorted – all
pages which have been updated with the new software version will use
the new sorting while untouched pages still use the old sorting. As
such, we need to run a maintenance script to update the sorting for
old entries.
The distortions may last from a few hours (on medium-sized wikis), up
to a day (on the largest wikis), and up to a few days on English
Wikipedia, The start-time will depend upon when the migration script
reaches each wiki.
This affects a number of large wikis (including eight out of the ten
biggest Wikipedias). The detailed list and the task for the technical
implementation is at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T189295
--
I will send the above message to the 8 largest affected Wikipedias
next Monday. All other wikis are unlikely to notice the brief
distortion.
It is also mentioned in next week's Tech News newsletter.
Thank you.
