Hey everyone,
apologies for the cross-posting, we're just too excited:
we're looking for a new member for our team [0], who'll dive right away in
the promising Structured Data project. [1]
Is our future colleague hiding among the tech ambassadors, translators,
GLAM people, community members we usually work with? We look forward to
finding out soon.
So please, check the full job description [2], apply, or tell/recommend
anyone who you think may be a good fit. For any questions, please contact
me personally (not here).
Thanks!

Subject: CREDIT showcase, Wednesday 7-June-2017
To: wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi!
I'd like to welcome you to join us at the CREDIT showcase next week,
Wednesday, 7-June-2017 at 1800 UTC / 1100 Pacific Time. We'd like to see
your demos, whether they're rough works in progress or polished production
material, or even just a telling of something you've been studying
recently. For more information on the upcoming event, as well as recordings
of previous events, please visit the following page:
<http://goog_1968694156/>

And if you'd like to share the news about the upcoming CREDIT showcase,
here's some suggested verbiage. Thanks!
*Hi <FNAME>*
*I hope all is well with you! I wanted to let you know about CREDIT, a
monthly demo series that we’re running to showcaseopen source tech projects
from Wikimedia’s Community, Reading, Editing, Discovery, Infrastructure and
Technology teams. *
*CREDIT is open to the public, and we welcome questions and discussion. The
next CREDIT will be held on June 7th at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 18:00 UTC. *
*There’s more info on MediaWiki, and on Etherpad, which is where we take
notes and ask questions. You can also ask questions on IRC in the Freenode
chatroom #wikimedia-office (web-based access here). Links to video will
become available at these locations shortly before the event.*
*Please feel free to pass this information along to any interested folks.
Our projects tend to focus on areas that might be of interest to folks
working across the open source tech community: language detection,
numerical sort, large data visualizations, maps, and all sorts of other
things.*
*If you have any questions, please let me know! Thanks, and I hope to see
you at CREDIT.*

In the ongoing effort to improve the discoverability of all the world's
knowledge, the Discovery team is proposing an enhancement to the search
results page on Wikipedia (Special:Search). [1][2]
The goal of this feature is to display related content for each individual
search result returned from query, so that even when the search result
itself isn't maybe entirely useful, perhaps its related content would be.
We would like your early feedback on this new feature—more information can
be found on MediaWiki about the explore similar functionality and testing
can be done in your own browser, using step by step self-guided testing
instructions. [3][4]
Cheers,
The Discovery Search Team

Hey all,
a few notes about a few upcoming changes. Ambassadors' support is
appreciated to make sure nothing falls in the cracks.
1) The new version of MediaWiki which is scheduled to go into production
tomorrow involves an extra <div> tag wrapping HTML served from the
MediaWiki wikitext parser [1]. Please notify the team on Phabricator [2] in
case issues with the extra <div> tag arise (not necessarily
gadgets-related): it will be watched by people who can help you evaluate
and assist you with any necessary fixes. We really appreciate the
translators' assistance with the (unfortunately) last minute heads-up [3].
2) Some code fixes to the preprocessor should go live as well and they may,
in certain cases, break markup that looks like code for language variants
[4]. This has been flagged lately in Tech News and most fixes have already
occurred (you can check the current status at [5]), so I wanted to take
some time to properly thank those who volunteered so far. In particular, a
special mention should go to* DePiep* who single-handedly fixed articles at
some of the biggest wikis, and provided insights and feedback into the
process. I'd like to extend the team's and my gratitude, in no particular
order, also to *Thiemo Mättig (WMDE), Vriullop, VIGNERON, Thurs,
MarcoSwart, Lsanabria, Amire 80, IKhitron* and whoever contributed their
time and knowledge so far.
My team is going to be involved in some work that may cause breaking
changes this year, so any feedback is appreciated on our talk page. [6]
Thanks for your understanding, HTH

Hey all,
tomorrow the RevisionSlider [1] will be available as a default feature for
all users on all wikis. The RevisionSlider adds a slider view to the diff
page so that you can easily move between revisions. The slider view is
collapsed by default, and will load by clicking on it. It can also be
turned off entirely in the user preferences. The RevisionSlider has been a
default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia for 6 months and a
beta feature on all wikis for 8 months. In addition to the users of the
default feature, the extension is used by more than 38K beta feature users
[2] and we have spent the past months addressing the issues raised.
The feature fulfills a wish from the German Community’s Technical Wishlist
[3], is inspired by DerHexer's revisionjumper gadget [4] and based on a
prototype <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Tech/RevisionSlider>by
the WMF's Community Tech Team
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Tech> [5].
Thanks to everyone who tested RevisionSlider and gave valuable feedback to
improve the feature! We hope that RevisionSlider will continue to serve all
contributors well.
