Sorry for the short notice, but later today we will be deploying an update
that will redirect tablet users by default to the MobileFrontend interface
(which has been updated to better accommodate tablets). Users can still
switch back to the desktop interface if they prefer it.
There is one minor local update that we want project administrators to make
that is related to this update. Please edit your local instance of the
MediaWiki:Mobile-frontend-terms-url to include the URL to the mobile
version of the WMF Terms of Use in your language. The links to the
translations can be found at
https://m.wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use.
For example, I went ahead and set
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Mobile-frontend-terms-url to:
//m.wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use/de
This will enable the Terms of Use link at the bottom of each page in the
mobile/tablet interface.
More information about the tablet redirect will be posted to the WMF blog
later today.
Regards,
Ryan Kaldari
Hi all.
Just to let you all know there is a small change to how the
{{#ifexist: and #switch parser functions work.
Previously entity references (& > " etc) were
considered different from the characters they represented. For
example:
{{#ifeq:&|&|the same|different}} outputted "different"
This has changed so that they are now considered the same. In
particular, this means that pages with certain special characters (ie
*,',",=,;), will now have {{PAGENAME}} "equal" to the actual page. For
example, on a page named "*foo"
{{#ifeq:{{PAGENAME}}|*foo|the same|different}}
used to output "different", will now output "the same".
Change goes live on testwiki/mw.org on the July 3, non-wikipedia
projects July 8, Wikipedia on July 10. You can test right now
http://deployment.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/
Relevant patch https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/113518/
If anyone has any concerns about this change, please reach out.

Hi folks,
on July 1st 1:00 am UTC, the Toolserver accounts will be expired and the
tools which haven’t been migrated yet will stop working. More information
can be found at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_12…
.
To get an overview, we started a collection: Do you miss any tools or have
you observed any broken redirects? Would you like to maintain a orphaned
tool? If so, please post them here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Tool_Labs/Collection_of_issues_after_Toolser…
Thank you very much!

Hi,
Nik Everett added a lot of information about future CirrusSearch changes to
the next edition of Tech News (#26, due to be sent on Monday). (Thank you,
Nik :)
We can't include all of it in the newsletter, so below is the original text
with all the details. The newsletter will point to this email for further
information.
_______________________________________________________________
- CirrusSearch updates (with 1.24wmf10)
- Categories will now be considered in result ranking which should
improve results
- We took a shortcut to get this deployed (much) more quickly and
the consequences are that the incategory operator won't work
for up to 24
hours after the deployment. We'll make this time as short as
possible. If
this is going to be a horrible pain then file a bug
<https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MediaWiki%20extensions…>
against
Cirrus with the wiki you work on. We can either prioritize
your wiki so the
outage is very small or, if its a big enough deal, come up with a
workaround.
- Text from the lead paragraph in the article will be given a boost
when ranking results which should also improve results
- This will take some time to roll onto the wikis after wmf10
because the index will have to be rebuilt. Days, likely.
- I don't imagine this'll have any impact on wiktionary and
commons but file a bug
<https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MediaWiki%20extensions…>
against
Cirrus if it seems like it has a negative impact on results
- We're on track to add support for searching in article source
including regular expressions. See [the documentation
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:CirrusSearch#insource:>] for
more.
- Like the lead paragraph the article source will take some time
to roll into the index after the deployment.
- Right now we haven't implemented snippet extraction from article
source searches. You'll only get snippets back from the regular search
terms. If you don't have any regular search terms you'll get
back a snippet
from the beginning of the article. I know this isn't ideal at
all, and its
on the list of things to fix.
- We'll cut all wikis over to a new snippet extractor
- You should only notice improvements in the snippets generated
but if you see any trouble file a bug
<https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MediaWiki%20extensions…>
against
Cirrus

I am not sure if this is appropriate here, but I do not know where to ask
otherwise...
On Beta Wikiversity someone is active now who uses the project as his
personal notepad/sandbox. The pages created in Dutch are short Wikipedia
articles, copy of a message of the yearplan of WMNL, texts of Wikisource,
Wikinews articles, and for every person he contacted he creates a page. In
his communication towards those people he presents himself as Wikiversity
and says such in these pages. All these pages do not contain educational
content.
Another major issue is that private information is added to these pages,
privacy violation for no reason.
Another issue is the adding of copyrighted material
Because of there is no Dutch community there, nobody takes action. At the
moment the Dutch chapter is working on setting up an education program, but
the current material would discredit the attempt and we do not consider it
realistic to start up this project at Beta Wikiversity.
How to act?
