Thanks for informing Arjuna garu.
AFAIK we could go ahead and use these images as per the fair use clause if Indian Copyright Act, especially for the purpose of education. We could even print a disclaimer on the CD.
It will be useful to write to Malayalam Wikimedia Community members also to check how they have resolved this issue.
It will be a good initiative if we could replace as many such images as possible with free licensed ones. Would be nice if we could try to take it up as a community project for the next 45 days. I will do my two cents of contribution for this.
Best, Vishnu

Hi,
The link to the non free images on Telugu Wikipedia , that I missed in my previous mail.

2013/10/17 Arjuna Rao Chavala arjunaraoc@gmail.com Hi,
As some of you have noticed, several Indian languages have celebrated/are celebrating tenth anniversary. Telugu language community is contemplating release of Telugu wikipedia content on a CD with appropriate modifications for School children use. The CD is proposed to be distributed to all schools in Andhra Pradesh.
Out of 9053 (approximate) images, 2071 (30%) are non free images(mostly book cover, cinema posters, logos etc) . We are looking for advice on the following A) Whether we can include all the non free content on CD? B) Whether WMF/WMIN will approve the use of Wikipedia Logo on the cover? C) Any other precaution/disclaimers that need to be included on CD to prevent any legal dispute in future.
As Malayalam community has produced a CD in the past and there have been attempts to produce an English School Wikipedia CD for India, I would like to hear from people with experience and expertise on these matters
Cheers Arjuna Rao Chavala Telugu Wikipedian

Yes, But for many logos, maps related to our culture , context, it is close to impossible.
This will be a great initiative as it helps to cleanup our image content, irrespective of the final scope of CD.
I request more people across the City and Language SIGs to participate in this initiative.
Cheers Arjuna
Dear Vishnu / Arjuna Rao,
While I'm reading this conversation, I'm also in couple of thoughts. Please let me know if I'm not spoiling the interest of this discussion.
Once the CD is ready for distribution, do you think that it would be a good idea to share with the community at a minimal cost? The reason behind this question is that, as part of eTelugu.org, it is a practice that we participate in the book exhibition that happens during the last week of December. I'm just wondering that if we can distribute that, it would be a great initiative.
What do you folks (or) anyone think of this idea?
Thanks for reading.

Dear Chakravarthy,
Most certainly! Anyone from the community (including eTelugu.org) should be able to FREELY use it, study it, share/redistribute it and improve it. All the four freedoms on which Wikipedia is being built by all of us.
Whenever the CD is ready a copy can be given to eTelugu.org and you could make and distribute as many copies as possible. We could even make a soft-copy available for free download. The more the better :)
Best, Vishnu

Sorry could not follow here: Software has four freedoms ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software#Definition ). Wikipedia content is released under CC-BY-SA or equivalent or bettter licenses from the point of view of sharing, Of course the software that runs could meet with four freedoms.
Whenever the CD is ready a copy can be given to eTelugu.org and you could make and distribute as many copies as possible. We could even make a soft-copy available for free download. The more the better :)
+1,
The CD preparation involves lot of work. Please see the discussion and links on Wikipediahttps://te.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B0%B5%E0%B0%BF%E0%B0%95%E0%B1%80%E0%B0%AA%E0%B1%80%E0%B0%A1%E0%B0%BF%E0%B0%AF%E0%B0%BE:%E0%B0%A6%E0%B0%B6%E0%B0%BE%E0%B0%AC%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%A6%E0%B0%BF_%E0%B0%89%E0%B0%A4%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%B8%E0%B0%B5%E0%B0%BE%E0%B0%B2%E0%B1%81 and encourage e-telugu team to contribute.

Yes Arjuna, precisely. The CD software *"should"* meet the four F's.
Anyone on the list who'd like to help with this great initiative?
