Dear all,
Here's<https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/07/24/chronicling-the-crafts-indias-first-g…>a
blog post cum report on India's first GLAM initiative at the National
Crafts Museum! The program started out in English but was taken forward in
Hindi to suit the staff members who have been enthusiastically creating
articles and editing in Hindi Wikipedia! The program has been a bold step
to prove that GLAM can very well happen in India - with its own design and
structure and it has also given the Hindi community a precious gift of 6
new editors.
A special thanks to User: Roboture who has been with us in each and every
meet and helped train editors, User:Yann for his first set of invaluable
Commons contributions and to User:Aniruddhajnu and User:Siddharatha_ghai
for coming down to the museum to inspire the staff members.
Hope this gives more courage to any community that wants to start a similar
project! Would love to provide any help needed.
Thank you,
Regards

Dear all,
I am delighted to give you a small summary of the Tag and assess drive that
was conducted by members of WP:India by means of a blog post.
Here<https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/07/20/english-wikipedias-biggest-ever-india…>it
is. As you can read in it, organizers and participants alike,
unequivocally agree it is an unprecedented achievement for members of our
community!
Thanks to all of you for sparing precious time to give your inputs.
Personally, it was also inspiring getting to know editors outside the
mailing list. May I take this opportunity to propose a bigger project or a
new collaboration like this one? Just starting a conversation :)
Thank you,
Best,
Noopur

Sorry if you have already read it. Cross posting to reach the mass.
Hi,
hope all fine :)
This is to inform you about Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) 2012, a global
public photo contest around monuments, organized by Wikimedia chapters and
groups. WLM was first organised in Netherlands in 2010, while
18 European countries participated in 2011. In total, more than
*165,000* pictures
of European monuments were uploaded in 2011.
Happy to inform you that, this year, Indian community is confirmed to
participate in the international
contest<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012>.
Photo contests and events have been organised in India till 2011, however
in different cities at different period of time. In an attempt to organise
the contest nationally, we will need some dedicated volunteers who can
assist us in following ways:
- Helping to prepare the list of monuments
- Coordinating in your own city
- Online support, especially from Wikimedia Commons users while pre,
during and post the contest for categorization, OTRS team, and many more
stuff's
Anyone interested are welcome to sign-up at the volunteers section! [1] Do
use Commons event talk page for discussion.

Hi All,
New editors across Indic Wikipedias often face problems while editing for
which need they help. However, most don't know where they can ask questions
or get clarifications as they are usually unfamiliar with village pumps or
mailing lists or even talk pages on basic editing. Many existing editors
want to help new editors and could appreciate a central place where they
can meet and help new editors. India Program has started a pilot to
support the Odia community's help desk,
Chatasabha<http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AC%89%E0%AC%87%E0%AC%95%E0%AC%BF%E0%AC%AA%…>.
(Incidentally, "Chata" means student and "Sabha" means community, in Odia.)
This pilot will build on the community's existing efforts - and seeks to
provide a structured way of designing and running a Help Desk. It takes
learning from English Wikipedia's Tea
House<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Teahouse>as well as other
experiences on Help Desk and similar services.
The Help Desk that is being piloted is user friendly, has guidelines to
provide simple answers to new editors and tries to manage the work load of
existing community members by providing ready answers to frequently asked
questions. The user friendliness of the Help Desk is in the form of being
able to ask questions without getting stuck on Wiki markups as well as
illustrated answers to some questions.
I have put a page on meta which has the pilot
design<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Program/Pilot_Designs/Community_buildi…>.
Eventually, we would like to help other Indic languages build similar Help
Desks. Please do provide your feedback on the talk
page<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:India_Program/Pilot_Designs/Community_b…>
.
Best

Dear all,
Just a gentle reminder for today's IRC on Social Media pilot at 8:00 p.m
(IST). You can join the meetup by clicking on this link:
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#wikimedia-office . Enter a nickname
and channel name is #wikimedia-office.
Since there is another IRC scheduled at 9:00 p.m for Wiki Loves Monuments
in India, we'll try and wrap this up by sharp 9:00 p.m. We'll be discussing
the progress on the already active social media groups (English and Odia),
explaining strategies to start it on new groups, discussing ways to retain
new editors. For those of you who may not have been following this
discussion, here's the link to the Social Media
pilot<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Program/Pilot_Designs/Social_Media>that
we are running on Facebook right now. Here's the link to the blog
post<https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/06/20/social-media-for-wikipedia-outreach-i…>on
the Social Media pilot.
Since this has been a collaborative process, I would urge all the mentors
(existing editors who are helping out on Facebook) to attend the IRC. Your
inputs and suggestions would be really helpful in deciding the course of
action further.
See you there!

Dear all,
I am back in Delhi and still cherishing the time I spent with you guys in
Guwahati. The tenth anniversary celebrations were fabulous and getting 60
participants for an Indian language Wikipedia meet up is extraordinary!
Just wanted to share a couple of suggestions with you all. These are things
we should do quickly before the energy and enthusiasm dies out.
- We should send out one mail to all those email IDs welcoming them to
Assamese Wikipedia and ask them to keep editing. In that mail, we can
mention the Facebook group link to Assam Wiki group also. They can connect
with us there. 60 people is a big number, let's not lose them guys!
- As I spoke to you earlier about using Assam Wiki Facebook group to do
small editing sessions, we should start those sessions from today itself if
possible. Here is a comprehensive 20 point
guideline<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Program/Pilot_Designs/Social_Media#Pro…>that
we've prepared. I hope this helps you out. To start with, maybe you
can start doing editing hours for Wikiproject: Districts of Assam.
- *Example*: *"Hey friends, we have started the new Wikiproject:
Districts of Assam. Which district are you from? I am from Tinsukia. Here
is the article on Tinsukia <insert link>. This article needs more
information! Who all are from Tinsukia? Reply here and we can make our
district article good!"*
- The Districts of Assam project can create a sense of competition and
make people work faster to write their district article. We should do it
like a fun competition on Facebook group. Post one district everyday. Don't
forget to tag some new members and your friends in that post! :-)
- We also spoke about doing outreach programs in our own cities. You can
also post this on Fb group:
- "*Hey friends! We are bringing Wikipedia to your city! Do you
study in a college or work in a company? Do you want us to conduct a Wiki
workshop for you? Reply here and let's contribute to Assamese Wikipedia!"
*
- Please post all these messages in *Assamese only. *Also, can we start
posting the same message on some "Assamese language group" or "Assam
community" group also? That will bring us new members. Gitartha has already
volunteered to start posting these messages. Anybody else interested in
taking up the responsibility for posting on Fb group?
I am writing a blog post on my experience of the celebrations in Assam.
Till then, let's get the social media and Wikiproject started in full
steam! :) Please feel free to ask me any questions.
