Hi. I am currently preparing a simple manual for use of Kiwix and Wikipedia for Schools. I would like to know if the teams have already packaged the files to DVD copies that will be left for the schools. If yes, then I would like to know the content folders of the DVDs and how they are arranged. If not then I suggest that the DVDs have two folders and the Zim file on the root system. The two folders should be named "User Guide" and "Kiwix", alongside the zim file. In that case the DVDs have to wait till we finish preparing this user manual so that we can package it as well. If the packages are ready then it is ok, we can avail some of the files like the user manual separately. Please let me know ASAP
Sam, No DVDs have been packaged yet.We will do that on Saturday.Just help us create the content.Or lets follow your suggestions as we may not have enough time to sync.who does fast, set the de-facto standards in that case its you.so we will be made to adopt and sync with your standards, feel free to go ahead with whatever you are doing.Just get in touch with Alex.
My view is don't include the zipped Kiwix,we will unzip for them so make no mention of the zipped version to them.
Thanks for your efforts.

Good suggestion Oscar. What I actually have in mind is the portable folder of Kiwix that contains all the necessary files, so that all they need to do is to copy the folder to drive C's program files and then launch the application from that folder, or better yet create a shortcut of the app on the desktop I suggest that you wait for the manual, I believe that it should be ready very early tomorrow. I may post it tonight so that you guys can make final touches. On the same note, since I lost my copy of the zim file I won't be able to make screenshots on that, so I will assign one of you. Please be a lil patient and the manual will be online. Cheers

Hi,
I'd like to mention that there is a new feature in Kiwix:
You can make a shortcut (or batch file) to open a specific ZIM file in Kiwix. That way you can, for instance, have two desktop icons: One opens english Wikipedia, the other swahili Wikipedia.
The feature is part of the next, upcoming release of Kiwix.

Manuel, if I want kiwix to open a certain zim file directly when I start it, is it possible? and if yes, in which folder should I place my zim file? Your help is always appreciated

Hi Samson,
right now, when you start Kiwix it will just open the last file that has been open in Kiwix. So the first time you start Kiwix it will just show an empty screen, then you can open a ZIM file from the menu (file... open...). If you close Kiwix and restart it, it will open that last opened file again.
You can put the ZIM file wherever you like. If the computers in the schools have a local server you can just copy it on one of the data shares. Just make sure that nobody will move the files around.
The new feature I introduced in my mail is that you can also tell Kiwix directly from the command line which file it should open:
kiwix.exe x:\path\to\zim\file.zim

I don't think the DVDs have been burnt yet. Abbas, could you confirm this.

That is the perfect thing to do. I can't think of any better option. Please remind David to capture that in his Mombasa previsit since I never saw it in his form. I am almost done with the manual b the way, just struggling with the use of Wikipedia for Schools part since I lost my zim file. It would be easy if I had it for references and screeenshots

How expensive are USB stick, 4 GB should be big enough, right?
Could we afford to just copy everything on a stick and give it to the schools? I assume that USB is available on all computers. How many schools are there, how many sticks do we need? In Europe I get a 4 GB stick for 7 EUR, so for a few hundred EURs we could give away a lot of sticks.

Wow, 4GB at 7Euros is quite cheap. Here in Kenya, they are much more expensive, that's why I opted for DVD's. Had I known, I could have bought the memory sticks while I was in Europe.

Thats so kind of you Manuel, since we will be doing 30 schools in the
pilot, then 30 would do for a start. However we had initially budgeted for the DVD's because they are cheaper back in Kenya.
Thanks for your help.

FYI: the cheapest I could find in NL are EUR 5,95 for 4GB[1]. I'd guess for a couple of EUR a piece more, data could be duplicated on it, and a colour logo/tekst could be printed on the stick[2].

For our case we used DVD the schools are very appreciative coz we give them a free copy its cheaper that way and the data is better stored as compared to a stick. Also consider the issue of viruses incase its to be installed in teachers computers and other computers the it happens the first comp has a virus and it eats up everything. We have been to schools and we asked the that Quiz and they are saying a DVD is better plus its cheap we bought one for 30 here in college.

That is the perfect thing to do. I can't think of any better option. Please remind David to capture that in his Mombasa previsit since I never saw it in his form.
